.17 hmr- lots of power in a little package?

what is the most impressive results you guys have had with this round. mine would probaly be that i went through a oil drum with the lid stuck in the top for a total of 3 layers of 1/16 steel. ive even had trouble putting a axe through 1 layer of the drum. so i was very impressed.

i have very limited time with my 17 but my buddy killed a groundhog that we ranged at 168 yards, on the bet that he couldnt hit it. i will say it stopped it immediately. at that time i have never shot one. this may not be that impressive but was the farthest i have seen in person

I knicked a whistle pig at 225y this summer with the one I used to have. Cross thorax shot, it went about 25 feet and rolled.

266 yd on a fox is probably the most impressive thing I've witnessed from this little wonder. I wouldn't have believed it had I not done it myself. With a 100 yd zero it only took 6.25 moa to find its target and one shot is all it took to drop it in its tracks. Needless to say there was absolutely no wind.

100 Yards: 10 rounds - .84" group

200 Yards: 10 rounds - 2.03" group

300 Yards: 5 rounds - 3.84" group

I would say there was no wind, or atmospheric pressure, or gravity, was it on this planet? lol, im playing, nice shot.

I actually just bought a Henry heavy octagon barrel chambered in this round, cant wait to finally shoot it, and see if its accurate.

I will give you 10-1 odds you cant duplicate this on camera....that 17 grain bullet goes all over the place with any wind..

1: Umm..that's why when you shoot at 300 you go when there is no wind. But believe what you want. It just takes a LOT of sighting.

2: I've only shot at 300 twice. First time was 5 rounds - 5.54" group. Really not that great.

3: There's a couple of guys on here that kick the crap out of me at 300 yards with photos. For example..

It's been me the whole time!

Like you, I really dig small calibers. Easy on the shoulder, and cheaper to shoot. Plus with projectiles that travel at over 4000 fps, how could one not have fun?

Oh lol. My bad. The problem is I just moved from Albany, NY to Largo, FL. All the local ranges here are only 100 yards. There are a couple that go out to 200 yards, and there's Manatee that goes out to 1000, but they're all at least an hour from me.

i was VERY tempted last night. was grazing at gander mtn, they had a barely used one (savage 93 heavy barrel) marked as a marlin, $239.

i may suggest to the other half that they have layaway and would make a great early easter/father's day/birthday present.

^ I've heard the Marlin and Savage are pretty much the best two and you can't go wrong with either one. I'm tellin ya man, you'll get hooked!

Just three round groups. Shoulda got pics, will do it again when the weather gets better. And ill try 5 round groups also.

Man, i love my lil' 17HMR....the wifey bought me one for Christmas years ago and it is just a freakin rip to shoot and is extremely accurate, the best ever personaly was probably 80yrd head shot on a grey fox...lights out, not even a flinch!!
Everyone should own one! they're a blast!!!

I have a Savage 93R17 FSS and had a FVSS and these little guns are tack drivers and are a blast to shoot. I use them for squirrel hunting here in PA and have not yet wounded one with no kill

I hit a squirrel 2 years ago at about 180 yards aiming at top of his head and put it right through his neck. Just about ripped his head off.

ive shot a chicken in the neck at 150 yards. so pretty much hit a quarter at 150 yards. it was pretty lucky. ive also shot the 20 gr xtp. they are pretty nice and dont mess the meat up. they also went through 3 layers of 1/16 steel and a 2x4 then got lodged in a piece of wood behind it. so they have more umph for larger game.
