Been doing some searching and seem to get numbers all over the place as far as powder charges and velocities using the 178gr eld-x bullet. I understand it’s a long bullet and cuts into case capacity and being a new reloader it made me nervous to get near what hodgdons says is a max charge of varget using a 180gr bullet of a different shape. Currently I’m at 44gr of varget in pmc brass with 210m primers 2.81 OAL and am seeing 2588 FPS out of a 20”stainless psa pa-10 max charge is supposed to be 45. I haven’t seen any pressure signs but I’m not real confident in my ability to spot them either. so I figured I would ask if this sounds safe and maybe if someone could plug the numbers into a program and see if I’m in the ballpark on velocity I should be getting.

Without commenting on what seems safe in your rifle, I will say that I'm getting velocity of 2634 fps out of my 20" .308 with the 178 ELD-X. FGMM brass, S&B LR primers, IMR 4064 powder.

I think Frank mentioned in one of his Everyday Sniper podcasts about using 2000MR, and getting some really stupid fast velocities out of a short (20" IIRC) barrel with heavy bullets (I wanna say he was using 185's).

Just go down the forum page to the Everyday Sniper section, they post the links there. I wanna say it was one from Spring this year, talking about reload practices/methods. Lemme see if I can find it...

I think it is episode #60, but you may to download a few to find it. Good info to listen to while on the road or stuck in traffic....

Hey ncd89, everything I read so far says the IMR compresses before that speed is reached, and I've heard that Varget is the best so far....with that said, I got a factory load of the precision hunter that hit 2,534 fps recorded on the v3 magnetospeed chronograph, temp 70, humidity 86 percent, altitude 1,300 feet, so I'd really like to know what your load is that hits the 2,634 mark, and those 3 variables in your area. Hornady uses Fed 210M primers and their brass, don't know what powder they use. I'm gonna look up the components you use, research & compare a bit more before working a load. I'd appreciate the info, and if your not comfortable giving it to the masses, please if you don't mind PM me the info, I only intend to use it as a data marker in my research.

My rifle is a factory Remington Model Seven .308 20" 1:10" twist barreled rifle.
