Yeah, It's pretty much the same exact ammo as the Grendel.

I guess Les Baer didnt want to use the Alexander Arms "Grendel" name and wanted to use their own- .264 LBC.

I'll stick to my 6.5 GRENDEL (AA). Actually nothing on my 6.5 Grendel build is made by Alexander Arms. The barrel and bolt is from Sabre Defense (Sabre uses the compound AA throat design), I didnt want a AA (ER Shaw) bbl but if the AA Spartan barrels made by Satern were not such a long-ass wait I would have got one of those. Im glad I got the Sabre bbl tho, it shoots outstanding as you can see in my first post (at the bottom-pics) Sub-MOA.

Also I reload all my 6.5 Grendel ammo so I will not be buying Factory ammo for a long time!

Re: New 6.5 Grendel Build Complete. (PIC HEAVY)

You don't need to do all that to get a suppressor. Buy the m4-2000 for the 6.8 and buy the 51T blackout flash hider in 6.5(I think that's a typo on their site it should be 6.8 or .277 technically).

This should exactly what you want and you can choose your thread pitch which should be 1/2-28

Re: New 6.5 Grendel Build Complete. (PIC HEAVY)

Thats the setup I would go with for my 6.5 Grendel:

6.8mm M4-2000
6.5 blackout flash suppressor

I would go with the 9/16-24 TPI for my Grendel cuz thats what it is not 1/2-28.

Looks like around $1,150 for the Suppressor and Flash hider but that doesnt include all the BS paperwork, tax stamp and wait!

But that definetly would be my setup when I plan to get it.

Im trying to get an idea of what everything is going to cost after all is said and done. +$200 for tax Stamp.

$1,150 + 200 = $1,350.00
Any other costs??

Re: New 6.5 Grendel Build Complete. (PIC HEAVY)

Nice Build. I have a heavily modified AA Hunter model that bears striking resemblance to longrange 30's rifle. I have been doing load development for a long time on this rifle. I did find a very accurate load at top safe pressure and velocity, using 30.5gr W748 & 123gr Scenars.
The new batch of W748 I bought was not as dense as the old lot, and I started deforming the 123gr Scenars in an attempt to duplicate the previously attained velocity. I started from zero doing load development again, and the only powder that gets me there (2500fps) safely is XBR8208. I am currently shooting a .4gr over max load using Xterminator, which has given me the accuracy and velocity I want, but has drawn severe, sarcastic, and even morbid criticism from senior members at the Grendel forum. Please don't use this load unless you want to end up hideously disfigured or dead.
My Grendel experience has been up and down. There are issues with any magazines that are not sold by AA. Make sure you buy the bolt and barrel as a set. Ammo and brass have been EXTREMELY hard to procure until recently. The muzzle threading on AA barrels is an oddball size, limiting your choices on muzzle devices. I had mine threaded to 5/8x24tpi, and using a PRI QC brake can spot my own rounds out to 750yds so far.
If I had it to do over again, I would get the 24" barrel with a carbon fiber ff handguard, this would give me more powder options.

I'm not by any means an authority on these rifles, but I have been tuning my rifle and ammo and magazines extensively, and need to offload some of the shit I've learned

I would like to post a picture, but am too obtuse to figure it out. Help Me?

For mags I mostly use the C-products 10rd mags, they work the best for me and I never had a misfeed with them. As far as the muzzle threads, yes it is a wierd size but there is a wide range of muzzle brakes/flash hiders for it you just have to look around for them.

I also get great results with the 123gr. Lapua Scenars and win748 (as seen in my pics at the top)

Im glad I picked the 6.5 Grendel over a 6.8SPC or .308 AR platform, IMO I think the Grendel is more accurate than the both of those. My next AR-platform build is going to be a .260. I cant wait to start that build!

The easiest way to post a picture is: Go to Photobucket.com and make a Album and them right click copy the IMG code then paste on your new post-DONE. Its easy. im sure there is other ways to do it but thats the best/easiest way I found to post em'.

Re: New 6.5 Grendel Build Complete. (PIC HEAVY)

What velocity are you getting with your 123 Scenar-w748 load? I'm dying to know if the chrome lined bore gives you a velocity boost. I have a 10rd Cproducts mag that works well, as well as the 27rd. curved mags, the 17rd straight mags have major issues.

The Grendel is more accurate, and has far greater range than the 6.8spc. Overall, this rifle has provided me with some rewarding experiences. The ability to spot my own rounds at extended ranges has helped me become a better mid to long range shooter.

I pulled the softpoint bullets out of the Wolf ammo and replaced them with 120gr SMKs and shot a 3/4" group at 2490fps using the Wolf powder charge.

Re: New 6.5 Grendel Build Complete. (PIC HEAVY)

Hornady's 6.5mm Grendel ammo is out.
I had a chance to try a few rounds through a 20 inch AA GDMR and it shot into 3-4 inches at 600 yards.

This is a great option to a 7.62mm platform

Good luck tryin to find factory ammo in stock anywhere for the Grendel!

Your going to want to reload for it or if you have a grendel and DONT reload, make a wise decision and buy a reloading setup and it will make life a hellava lot easier on yourself.

Midway USA sometimes has it in stock but it sells out in a couple hours when they do get it. I have been seeing alot of the Factory Hornady 123gr. A-MAX loaded ammunition available at a couple places tho. Wierd.

I think I bought factory ammo for mine ONCE (20rds) and it was the last time.

Reloading is key for the Grendel setup. Trust me on that one!

How is the case stretch on the Grendel? are they tough to full length size after a while? do you use the Grendel/Lapua brass or have you used the Hornaday (LBC 264) stuff?

Jeff

The case stretch is not bad at all. I think I trimmed them maybe 3 maybe 4 times with around 13-15 reloads on the same case and they were minor(very little brass removed to get correct OAL-1.516") trims. They dont grow/stretch much at all. Lapua is top of the line brass and im so glad they make it for the Grendel. They are not "tough" to FL size after awhile either, I dont know why they would ever be tough to size. Do you lube your cases before you size them?

All I use is mainly Lapua brass and some AA Brass. Both are pretty much identical to each other. IMO the AA brass IS Lapua brass with a AA headstamp. I havnt tried the Hornady brass but im pretty happy getting 15+ reloads wit the Lapua brass, I dont think Hornady is going to beat Lapua's brass quality.

Im getting around 2,580 - 2610fps with 30.5gr. of Win748. I get better accuracy around the 29.5gr.-30.2gr. range w/ Win748. Actually it shoots almost just as well with 29.0gr. too. It seems from 29.0gr.-30.2gr. shoots very well. I was surprised such a wide range of powder differences with the same powder shoots so well.

This is my favorite load with the Grendel (123gr. Lapua Scenars + Win748.
The 123gr. Lapua Sceanrs dont go sub-sonic untill after 1,200yrds. Thats good enough for me on a AR-platform!

My Second in line would be 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip + BL-C(2), its shoots almost as good as the scenars but just falls short.

I think they are the 10rd mags C-products makes that work the best for me. I shoot mainly bench and prone so I like the shorter mags.

Re: New 6.5 Grendel Build Complete. (PIC HEAVY)

Thanks for all the views and replies on this thread! I see there are alot of Grendel fans out there!

Keep 'em comin!

Also I just installed the Phoenix Tactical bipod feet. I got the rubber (sled) feet and set of the claws for prone in the dirt. The Rubber feet work very well on the bench. They give you alot of grip.
Its nice to get that much grip on a bench so you could "load" the bipod and prevent alot of the bipod jump/hop. I will have to take some new pics with them installed.

Im very happy with this purchase!
Thanks Phoenix Tactical for a great product.

Actually there are several, 6WOA, 6mm Hagar, all of Whitleys 6mms, a 6BR, 6BRX, 6.5BR, 6.5BRX, 5.56x42 but, nice looking rig and shooting.

Not to mention all three WSSM calibers have bullets that will feed from a mag and get past 1k supersonic.

Edit:

I had a 24" overwatch upper and I had to say I liked what the round could do. But I never did get the velocity that was advertised without doing a lot of wear to my expensive cases. So, I have to ask what velocities you are getting with those loads? Mine was pretty accurate as well. Although I wasn't quite doing with it what your are with yours.

I bought the upper to see if the round was indeed a viable alternative to the .223. After testing it about 600 rounds I felt it was a vast improvement over the .223. More power and more range. And FWIW, I took a hard look at this round and the 6.8 SPC. I chose this one just because it offered the flexibility of short and long range. The 6.8 only extended out to medium range. Where it gave up ground to the .308 as opposed to the Grendel that gained ground on the .308 at extended ranges. I sold it satisfied that it was what it was advertised to be.

As far as a suppressor, it's a non-issue here in MN... You can't have one. Then again neither can LE without a valid written reason/permission from the Governor. And, they have to get that permission every year or other year. Along with 100% accountability at all times. So, I can't help you with that.

Yeah ,but how many AR-platform builds do you see with the WSSM setup? Very few.
Hmmmmm.....wonder why?

Seen a bunch actually. In fact if you go to my posts you will see a couple who've responded who have a WSSM of some sort. It's not without it limitations though. The Grendel offers a pretty good balance between capacity and performance. And like any well built rifle with a good bullet, can get you to 1k {edit: accurately}.

BTW, you have a damn nice rifle.! I also added an edit there. I really wish the military would go to this round. It is a much better fit for 'one round fits more niches than anything else'.

Re: New 6.5 Grendel Build Complete. (PIC HEAVY)

The 6.5x284 possum hollow trimmer probably won't fit.

Call them & have them make one for your grendel; that is what i did. Works well but make sure you resize your brass before using it.

I love using the RCBS Trim Pro Power Case Trimmer myslef, it cuts down on trimming alot. You could put a case in the trimmer and go to do another step like chamfer/deburring the last round you trimmed while one is trimming by itself. Nice to have.

Now i just got to quit powder weighing/checking every charge and get myself a chargemaster! Im anal tho, I feel safe when I know i checked every charge and know every charge is correct and not under or over charged.

I re-edited my first post and posted some better pics taken with a camera and not my cell phone. Also some minor new upgrades like the Phoenix tactical Pod feet. These work Great! I bought the rubber feet for bench use and a tan set of the small pod Claws for prone shooting in the dirt.

Re: New 6.5 Grendel Build Complete. (PIC HEAVY)

Im thinking of ordering a Gas Buster charging handle to cut back on the gas blowback. I never used one of them, are they worth it? Do they actually cut back the gas in the face after the shot? Or isnt it worth it?

Also im thinking about getting a little bit heavier of a buffer spring. My shots are ejecting around 2:00. I was told that it was overgassed and to get a heavier buffer to help. True? I already have a M16 (auto) carrier to add a little extra wieght.

What would be a good buffer to get for this?

Re: New 6.5 Grendel Build Complete. (PIC HEAVY)

This was a great post that had lots of great reloading info in there (I have been hunting around for reloading data for my new 18" Grendel). So it seems like ball powders are the way to go with the Grendels. I was curious to hear if anyone had any updated data to the above. Longrange30 was talking about the 123gr bullets and Win748. BLC2 seems to be used a lot as well.

Any comments and observations would be welcomed. Thanks

I have the info in the new Hornady manual. All were tested with 14.5" barrel (I'm not sure why they thought it would be a good idea to test all of their loads in a Class 3 firearm that most people won't be using rather than a 16" or something).

The new Hornady Reloading Book has New 6.5 Grendel data in it also.

Alexander Arms has Reloading info on their Webpage.

Hodgdon has 6.5 Grendel data on their Webpage.

Lots of it out there you just have to find it. When the 6.5 Grendel forum was up I had posted my compiled load data on a thread. There was over 200+ loads listed.

One heck of a nice Xmas gift from Longrange30! Thank you much indeed sir! Awesome set of posts - now I just need to turn all this factory ammo into .75moa groups and brass and get to work on these...

My Satern 18" Grendel should be here on Monday from AA and I will be shooting it before 2011!
