Anyone got any experience with any of the 19 caliber calhoon cartridges? I’ve been eyeing building one for quite some time, but wanted to hear some real world experience.

I’ve had great results with their .22 cal bullets.

Crazy as it is I do. I have a .19 badger. Fun rifle built on a cz 527 that was a 22 hornet , James built for me. Right now I'm shooting R7 with the 32gr bullets. My daughter took over the rifled I cut the barrel to 17" put a suppressor on and she shoots prairie dogs with it. If you want a 22 hornet, 221, 17 hornet class cartridge its a good option. I have found that it doesn't have a great spot in my varmint arsenal. I have moved to two rifle set up for small stuff bergara B14r in 17hmr and 223 ackley with 80 elm. HMR for the short stuff and 223 AI for long stuff and or windy days.

The 19 Calhoon had a bit if a following in the Varmint Hunter club of 25 yrs ago.
I've had 2 17 Remingtons and down to one now, always been a fan.
I used some of Calhoons 17 Rem bullets, the double hollow point 28 gr silver bullet.
He used to make 17 cal in several configurations and weights.
As did Berger at the time 15, 20, 25, 30,& 37 gr. I used the Berger 30 gr, and mostly the Hornady 25gr at 4100 fps.
I just recently tried the Hornady copper 15.5 gr and went to 4800 fps with the powder I chose but another unavailable power was 4900 plus fps.
This is one of the factory 700 Remingtons, in 17 Rem.
Playing with this powder in the 17, working on a high velocity load...it will begin to penetrate AR 500 armor.
The standard 17 Remington is very fast with many new powders.
Shoot a squirrel and only the tail remains, or one hind leg on a piece of skin.
One guy in the Varmint Hunters club took the 17 Rem to 1000 yds and it went clear through a milk jug at that range.
I've only shot it at 500 yds ...it has a very flat trajectory. Another took many coyotes with his, as it never left an exit wound, I believe he used 30 gr Bergers which are no longer made.
If ya have a chance to buy a 17 Rem cheap, get it, find out for yourself how much fun it is.
PO Ackley killed wild donkeys with his...it's in his books.

If i could get the old .17 cal 30gr woodchuck den gold bullets I would have a .17 rem / .17 tac/ etc in a heart beat. I shot those bullets in a .17 rem back in the day and they where a killing machine.

Yep the good ol days...Todd Kindler the Woodckuck Den ...and I have his loading manual the Sensational Seventeens.
He had several bullets available for the 17, 28 and 30 gr plus Hammond of others, from Berger, Hornady, Hammond, etc.
Bergers were $27.00 for 200 bullets!
    A different time....

.19 Calhoun built in a CZ.

Very accurate. Kills stuff like a hopped up hornet.

My only worry is that someday bullets will disappear. It would be nice to know if he has a plan in place for sales as James is no spring chicken.
But since he lives a few hours from me it's been no big deal so far.

So did I and I know what you mean. I sold my last 17Rem after I couldn't buy the 30gr Golds anymore. IIRC the G1 BC was .28 so quite good 500 yards out still.

I almost bought Calhoon's .19 based off the 30 carbine but changed my mind. Probably for the best.

I got into a used 5mmFBI which is a version of a 20 Vartarg AI. 32's at 3760 fps in a 21" barrel using a medium load of 300BLKOUT. It reminds me of a 6mmPPC because of it's precision and look. Just a neat little cartridge that doesn't heat up barrels quickly. I've had a lot of cool varmint rifles over the years but this one

    I stopped at.
