Gunsmithing 1911 front sight

Re: 1911 front sight

Got any Vice Grips?

LOL serioulsy Ryan, is it a pinned in or staked in front sight?

The best advice for the long run is have a reputable smith dovetail the slide for you your sight of choice.

Either way I have the tools to Swage in a front sight (which I don't recommend on a hard use pistol) but its the cheapest.

and your welcome to use my sight tool but I doubt you want to wait until I get home

Re: 1911 front sight

Kimber would be a dovetail. You can order a tool from Midway/Brownells for this but they are not cheap. I would have a smith handle it and in most cases I would think they could do it right there on the spot for you.

Re: 1911 front sight

A couple of drops of Kroil or KnockerLoose on the dovetail. Check to make sure that it does not have a rollpin vertically through the blade. Brass punch-right to left removal-left to right installation.
Make sure that the new sight is for a Kimber-IIRC they use a proprietary dovetail.

Re: 1911 front sight

If you don't plan on changing sights often I would let the smith handle it. If something gets bugged up, it's not on you to fix it.

It will probably cost the same to buy the tool, or pay a smith.

Re: 1911 front sight

If it is a dovetail fit, you are going to need to find out whether it is a 60 or 65 degree, height, width and thickness to order the new sight, and have the correct file as these things are file to fit, bigger hammers are not options.
