I work for the city i live in and i was in charge of building and constructing the new firearms training facility for the city police. We are installing out action target targeting system this week. We will be done by Friday and it will be time to play. I dont shoot handguns much but i am wanting to learn the in's and out's of proper handgun shooting. I dont want to spend a large around but i am not cheap ass either. I like the 1911 style guns, so i am wanting to purchase one to learn with. I suppose my budget will be around 800 bucks. I was hoping some of you guys could tell me what models i need to be looking at. Any ideas? thanks Lee

Springfield Loaded or Mil Spec should fit your needs nicely. They don't have lawyer induced firing pin safeties that plague alot of new 1911's.
Just a good solid performer.

Another vote for the Springfield.
I've got 2 Springfield's, 1 in a fullsize and it's great. I also have a milspec in a Champion frame and I ended up spending extra money to put on a beaver tail and commander hammer and changing the sights. A loaded version would have been a better route and cheaper in the long run.

Both will be in the 800-1,000 dollar range.
Magazines are the Achilles heel of 1911's. I use Tripp Research Kobra mags and have never had a problem. The Wilson Combat come highly regarded as well.

thanks fellas for the info. I was looking at the loaded springers before i posted the question. I havent looked at buying one of these for about two years now, and the prices sure have gone up. Time to start shopping!! I love this part!! Lee

I haven't had a Taurus personally, but a friend does and likes it. Won't hold resale like a SA Loaded will.
Just my opinion, but Kimbers that have a "II" in their name are not a better otion than the SA. Now if you can find a Kimber pre-"II" that's another story....

Find a site that lists the number and names of the MIM parts. An older Colt minus the sometimes failure prone MIM stuff would be my choice. JMHO

what about Dan Wesson? I really like the idea of a 40cal 1911. Dan Wesson has what they call a points man 7 i believe. 1100 bucks but it sure looks nice!! Lee

IMO this is the best bang for the buck in the price range Your talking about , http://www.springfield-armory.com/armory.php?version=4 .
Alot of features and can usually be had in the 7 - 750 range .

+1, I've got a Kimber and it's got that.
Or you can go with a Kimber Classic, I understand if it has a II in it, it's got the new non original safety (and an external extractor)
Have heard GOOD reviews about the Kimber US GI 45 tho...but it's not going to be your super accurate competition type.
BUt hte USGI can be had cheaper...

kimber or springfield milspec. i own a kimber custom II and have never had a malfunction or any sort of problem. my dads got the milspec springfield and after buying my XDM i am very pleased with springfields quality. ive been a glock and kimber man forever.

DW Pointman are from what I hear good pistols, but I haven't got firsthand experience.
If you want an out of the box reliable 1911 I'd stay away from 40's though, even STI's sometimes need a trip or two to the shop to run well.

I have a few Dan Wesson 1911 platforms and their well made and definitely my Top choice.Dollar for dollar they cant be beat in my opinion.Also look into Fusion arms,Bob Serva broke away from DW and is now making some really hi-end 1911s.

I second a NHC. The extra $$$ up front pay off when purchasing a 1911.
I know where you can get a Nighthawk Custom Vickers for $2250.00 (possibly lower as the guy has been attempting to sell it for some time. He is also accepting partial trades). The Vickers is no longer made, but still has a lifetime NHC warranty .... It only had 100 round fired thru it ... (not my weapon).

What would you guys think about a Colt 1991a1? Its not nearly as flashy as a Kimber but you can always add to it later. It is in your price range and I dont think you can go wrong with a Colt.

If you like the 40 find a older para wide body P16 or any para would be my vote other than the 70 series colts.

I ended up going with Dan Wesson after researching forever.
So far I have put over 250 rounds through it and not a single issue the trigger is crisp and consistent.
Some people have had issues with them because the slide to frame fit is so tight, but DW takes care of them, and everyone seems to be happy.

Love that Heritage picture. I have several 1911's but I think when considering bang* for the buck you can't beat the Dan Wesson.
You can also buy these with a cosmetic blem, usually very minor, for less money.

Dan Wesson is the high-quality bang for the buck leader, IMO. Of course, I'm more in to quality and accuracy than bells and whistles. It may be worth your while to find out how Dan Wessons are made compared to others in their price range. Well, owning two Ed Browns and a Wilson I think you can compare them out of their price range as well.
