I definitely think so. My 1911 is still my most accurate pistol by a notable margin, even over my Shadow 2. It's an iconic piece of history. Every serious gun collection should include a quality 1911.
On the other hand I'm not a fan of my FNX and may end up selling it.

I have many 1911’s and a fnx. I enjoy shooting the 1911’s. The fnx meh, it’s accurate and reliable but for a range toy it’s not a ton of fun. And let’s be honest a blued 70 series with hand cut checkering and French border, there is nothing better looking if you ask me. How do you show up to a bbq with a fnx-t?
1911s are just cool - even pretty if you get a nice one. Love mine as a sport gun and a treasure.

What happened to your “bbq 357” ? Jesus Christ that’s the most fudd holster I’ve ever seen with that pistol. Buy some kydex old man! I bet you only keep 10+1 in that bad boy, but you can get it done with 5, and only 230 hardball because that’s how jmb would have done it.....You got it because the dot makes it easier to shoot with your aging eyes, huh? My wife hand built that holster for the fn back when not many were available
and none that would hold it with the suppressor on.
My initials and a heart are cut into it, it was her first holster build, I still rock it.
The magazine cover had that fn on it that month and I decided it would be fun.
The way new guns get to you. First is shot show, in Vegas then a few writers
get one for review, it gets a big article. Then distributers get enough for thier A stores
2 each, thats all. And then they judge sales potential and put more out after demand builds.
I can guarantee I had one of the first to hit Texas.
My son worked at a gun shop / range and kept track of inventory and shipping.
Called me at work and said delivery truck rolling in from distributor. I ran out of work.
I walked up to the crowd at the counter some in back and some in front,
A large rectangular cardboard box was on the counter with a small fn logo on the lable.
I pulled my credit card out and threw it on the box and said I'll take it.
The head of sales said ok would you like to see inside the box, sure get me a form
And you guys can all go shoot it as soon as I clear .
Same exact senerio on my xdm first one on the table still in cardboard.
The doctor on top is very fast to accuire a shot aand works in the dark nice.
I have a p89, my 642 a dealer exclusive mark 3 several ar's with dots / lazers.
It's a tool like any other.
All my defense firearms are loaded with the proper defense rounds and magazines are
loaded to 1 less than max capacity on purpose.
Btw that 642 has an xs big dot tritium and lazer grip as well and a nice trigger job.

If you’ve ever shot a 1911 the ergonomics are bar none and the accuracy potential is up there. However the are arguments to be made as to the viability of it as a combat weapon in today’s modern era. However for home defense, or as a range toy, it’s certainly is still a relevant pistol. They are fun and an awesome peace of history.

would not be a waste for many reasons. That being said I love my fn tac for what it is.

I just found some Ernie Hill leather from 30 years back, give or take. Not exactly EDC stuff but I think I'll take it to the range the next time I go. Phone camera doesn't do the colors justice. (also shown: my old Bianchi holster)

That gun in my pic is stainless. Frame is a sorta grey surface, slide has black with polished flats.
I've seen a blued Les Baer that looked well used. I hear the bluing on them is pretty "thin".
All blueing is pretty thin I think, depending on how you carry it. I have a kimber pro classic carry thats turnbull charcoal blued and that’s the only one that doesn’t show all that much but it’s not as pretty as colt royal blue. The most flawless I’ve ever seen up close was a yost colt. It was 15years old when I saw it and spent its life in a milt sparks holster. Only had wear around the front on the slide. But to be honest it added to it’s allure. He wouldn’t sell it, of course I asked
I don't think anybody has bluing that wont wear down on a daily carry.
I agree I wear one of his belts everyday. And have two of his holsters
Had a Colt lite-weight Officer's Model years ago that I carried. Loved it but sold it--still have heart issues every time I think about my stupidity. Have lusted after another or full-sized 1911 ever since. Bought a Sig Scorpion a month ago. Got a good one. Great trigger, accurate, and totally reliable with about 350 rounds so far. Just something about a 1911. They feel good in my hands and shoot well for me. I've shot the FNX 45 and almost bought one a few years ago. Pretty good value considering all you get. Just not crazy how it felt. I have small hands and it was hard for me to get a good grip for some reason.
I have both, not really a fan of either but at least the FNX has some practical utility. I don't know wtf people do with single stack 1911's other than admire the classic looks and talk about the good old days.
That’s all they’re for. They aren’t practical defensive pistols in 2020. But they are pretty. They are kinda like a ruger no.1 pretty but not practical.
They are just right for shooting sports where a 1911 is called for, they are pretty, you can still shoot a pretty big bullet out of a 1911.
Some still carry 6 shooters....
So I picked up a new FNX (Venom installed) a few weeks ago. So far, I'm not impressed. It was going to be my new nightstand gun but, at this point my Kimber Super Carry Pro will keep that job. I've got over 1000 rounds through the Kimber without ever having a single malfunction with any ammo.
The FNX had a bad start. Initially it wouldn't fully eject a single round. After about 40 rounds it started spitting the cases clear but wouldn't push flat nosed target ammo up the feed ramp. After switching to round nosed ball, cleaning and oiling a couple times and about 250 rounds through it, it will feed just fine but, the slide still refuses to lock back on last round. Seriously frustrating for a fairly expensive gun that has such a great reputation. Probably going to send it in to FN to sort out.

I'd send it back. I have an FNP-45T that has no issues at all with over 3,000 rounds through it.
Definitely would send it back if it were me. My FNX45 wears a RMR and SiCo Osprey at the nightstand and easily has a 1k+ rnds through it with no malfunctions. I have both 1911s and FNX45 FNX9s and all are enjoyable to shoot. My 1911s are range/'just to have' items though and I wouldn't carry them due to mag capacity and being cross eye dominant a red dot makes things a lot easier with pistols for me.
I have the opposite but my kimber is a classic carry. I’m sick of messing with that thing. It doesn’t ftf so to speak but it does like to fling every third piece of brass at my forehead

That’s pretty funny. I put a Scooby do bandaid on it And my mommy kissed it all better. If you want my advice (I have 16 1911’s about half I inherited from my dad when he passed) I’d stay away from kimber all together. The quality just isn’t there I’d go with dan Wesson for a nice pistol outta the box but if you’re sending it off for all the fancy bbq stuff a colt 70 either repro or old is what you want. I recommend chuck Rogers or chuck warner both in Arizona I believe (it’s been awhile since I’ve had 1911 stuff done)
Put it this way kimber needs 500 rounds to “break in” idpa shooters go through way more rounds that normal ltc type folk and I’m sure idpa fellas tune their weapons with spring weight for their ammo the kimber still fails screw tight tolerances that’s bs, there are plenty of pistols in this world that don’t rattle when shaked and still run. Kimber has great marketing and handsome pistols but in my opinion they are junk for the most part. Also have you seen the cz 1911 thing? It’s black and red. That looks super cool I can’t wait to handle one
All right! You guys got me off my ass and I have received a repair order to send my FNX in to FN. Hope they can get it sorted out, so many things I like about it.

Let us know how it goes, never used fn’s customer service. Also any one who wants it I have a fn trucker hat that’s to small for me (shut up snubby) that is whoever wants it for the price of shipping it still has the cardboard in it for shape I never wore it but it does have a bit of dust in the picture I’ll lint roll it before shipping

Apparently Les Baers and other high end 1911s need a few hundred to break in - well cleaned and liberally lubricated. Tight tolerances.....
The most common cause for 1911 headaches is probably magazines. Every now and then, one or another of mine gets slightly wide towards the top end. A gentle squeeze in a vice or C-clamp fixes that, but I need to keep an eye on them.

I agree with the magazine but to be honest kimber pro tac mag is actually very good. Idk about this break in period though with tight tolerances. I only have a used danwesson and it didn’t come with any paper work so idk what they say. Les Baer is in another league from kimber /dan Wesson, for what they cost he’ll for what any of them cost they need to have hand lapped slides on ball bearings. Cz does it on their shadow line of pistols. It can be done and stay under 1500$
1911s are obsolete? How? I’m legitimately asking. I mean, it’s an old design. Really old. But obsolete as a combat handgun?
I ask because high capacity, reliability in dusty or muddy conditions, and affordability are the only advantages that modern striker-fired polymer-framed handguns have over the 1911. And for those benefits, the trade off is inferior accuracy, inferior trigger, and inferior ergonomics -all of which are important contributors to combat effectiveness of a handgun.

With CZ's and 2011's you can have all that cake and eat it too.
Double stack 1911's put the final nail in the coffin, but nostalgia keeps the coffin from getting buried.
I would argue that double stack magazines aren’t really an asset. Unless you have bear paws for hands, a single stack fits better and is more controllable, which lends itself to more natural shot placement and faster recoil recovery.
As far as capacity, in the overwhelming majority of self defense shootings, the defender shoots 3 or less rounds. In the military, the sidearm is a backup to buy you the time to get your rifle in action, so in nether case is a double stack capacity a genuinely tangible asset in any but the rarest of circumstances -and if you find yourself in a situation where you need more than 9 shots, Let’s be honest, the additional 7 of a double stack probably isn’t going to be enough. Besides, you should never be without a spare magazine just because it’s the fastest way to clear a malfunction and get back in action. So even with a single stack, that’s 8+8+1.
Thats a lot of justification to make less sound like more.
Next you'll tell me cars that get 5 mpg are the best because gas stations are everywhere.
Joking aside, different tools shine in different situations. You need a gun that won’t malfunction in the desert? Modern striker-fired is the answer. You need a gun that is controllable in small to average size hands? 1911. You aren’t disciplined enough to keep a weapon lubed? Striker-fired. Want the fastest and most accurate follow up shots? 1911.
Thats still shooter dependent. I have smallish hands and a single stack feels way too narrow for me. I can't get enough meat on the grips to get it to behave right. A 2011 feels just a hair bigger than I'd like but is way easier to control. A CZ75 is the middle of the road Goldilocks porridge that anyone can use well.
