1965 1000 yard national match rifle

A generous man by the name of david merideth donated a match grade 1965 remington X-40 chambered in 300 win mag, with a 20x unertl scope, to our JROTC rifle team. He told us to raffle it to raise money so we can shoot the Junior olympic 3P air rifle match this summer. Problem is, i dont know much about this gun. So im looking for a value as to what the gun is worth, and any info that can be provided. The rifle has never been shot he says, and i believe it. The crown and muzzle is in perfect condition. I am going to carefully clean the rifle before it is sold.

Wow, an engraved presentation rifle. I can't help with the value, but it is a very unique and rare rifle that should make collectors drool.

The rifles value itself is fairly speculative due to its engraving, "never fired" condition, and the pedigree of an NRA champion shooter on the stock. The scope itself is worth over $1000 on a good day with those original rings and spring, more with original packaging & papers. Book values don't have a range for the rifle, my blue book says the 40X centerfires from '61-64 top out at $1200, but that sounds way low to me, and 300WM isn't even a listed caliber for that year range.

If I was to Gunbroker that package, I'd put it at $4,000 myself.


BUT, the good thing about a raffle is you can sell a LOT more tickets than the item is actually worth, since everyone is taking a chance. It really doesn't matter at all what the gun itself is valued at, a $500 or $5000 item could potentially sell just as many draw tickets. Since he said raffle, a raffle it is. Unfortunately you've been given til summer which isn't much time, as expensive raffles do well over months of selling.

If I were you, I'd probably hope for 2-5000 $1 tickets. Set up posters at all the local ranges/sporting good stores, and then get a group buy started up here and on ARFCOM.

Then tell me, so I can buy lots of tickets. *evil grin*

I wouldn't venture to guess the value, but I would think its worth a second mortgage plus selling a couple grandkids into the slave trade.

I deffentaly would say its worth more then 4 grand. I think you would get a better ideal going to the CMP Website and chech out the auctions of what those rifles go to. Also go to the CMP bolt action forum and get their opinions.

It is a beautiful "one of a kind" rifle that apparently was given as a trophy to the winner of the match. We're not talking about a 1000 yard rifle some one had put together.

Come back and tell us the price tag you put on it.

I would absolutely be in for some tickets if you decided to expand the raffle. I think $10 tickets would net more money and be easier to keep track of.

you will want to post this over on usrifleteams.com, but the LR and NM forums.

Hopefully some collector will grab it.

It belongs in the NRA museum. You might consider contacting the NRA and seeing if they can combine a grant program for your kids with the rifle being available for the NRA museum.

This last avenue I think would be the best avenue for you to get revenue for your club with it. That or a wealthy donor willing to give you the $$ then donate it himself to the NRA Museum.

Is your club by chance set up with a 501(c)(3)?

Im a winchester man but I would go 3-4 grand on that rig. may be photos but looks like moisture got to it. surface rust? on a good day with all the stars lined up it may do 5K . very nice old school rig that U can bet will hammer..

The flash makes the rust look worse than it is. Nothing I can't take care of in an hour.


I think were going to do 10$ raffle tickets. I'll throw out the idea of the NRA museum also.

Yes, everything is vintage on the rifle and original.

If you decide to go the raffle route, if you have not done one before (particularly for a firearm) you should look into your state's laws regarding same before moving forward.

Ok guys, after seeing so many people who want to buy tickets, ill talk to colonel or my dad (coach of our team, USMC 2nd div. rifle team 99-2001) and see what we can do. Ill get back to everyone soon!

By the way, the rifle is at a local smith who is thoroughly cleaning it for free!

Yes, it is cracked. It is an almost 50 year old lacquer finish. This is quite common for old lacquer finishes, especially if they are not oiled every once in a while.

Back 25 years ago, when I was the Electrical Inspector, a guy with a house on the shore of the Hudson River had a similar rifle over his mantle. I asked if the Unertyl scope was for sale. He chuckled and said not that one-read the plaque. It was an engraved Win M70 in 300 Win mag, and he was the highpower champ in I think 1968. He said he gave up shooting after that, since he was at the top. He teaches history at I think Bard College, or did at the time.

Mr Meredeth was champion in 1965 and just moved to north carolina a year ago. He moved from new york. Infact, i remember when we picked up the rifle, he had a picture of his old house hung on the wall. It was taken from a boat because it showed water and a dock infront of it.
