Just got the new 243 Ackley back the other day and finally got a chance to get out today and get it zeroed. Accuracy was just as expected.
I was sitting on the back porch right at sunset and happen to look up and spotted this zero confirmation at a tad over 100 yd. Needless to say the 105 AMAX performed remarkebly well.

That is proper barrel break in.

There is a little more to it than just "reamed out". The taper on the case body is reduced to roughly .006"/inch and the shoulder angle is increased to 40 degrees. Aside from the obvious increase in powder capacity and velocity the theory behind this is that it allows the powder to burn more efficiently within the case instead of in the throat and bore.

Here is a standard 243 and a 243 Ackley.

Well I know you fire form .243 cases to .243 AI, I was just wondering if you would have to re-barrel to an AI, or if you could have say a remington 700 SPS .243 re-chambered to a .243 AI.

Re: 1st confirmed

Yes, It could be done. With little to no throat wear it could be set back, rechambered and be good to go. Most gunsmiths prefer to cut a new barrel but I'm sure you could find someone to do it for you as long as you're throat wasn't roasted.

Re: 1st confirmed

some will just run a reamer up into the original chamber but that isn't really desired. The 243AI is something near .004 shorter than a 243 so to achieve this the smith should set the barrel back.
