Just put together my first tactical rifle and so far I am very pleased with the results.

Rifle: Remington SPS Tactical .308
Scope: Falcon Menace 4-14FFP ML16 (Metric Knobs)
Mounts: Tactical Precision Systems 20MOA Base / 30mm Low Rings
Bipod: Harris BRM-S 6-9"
Sling: Tactical Invervention Specialists M24 Quick-Cuff

Headed out to the range today... only 100 yards available local. Rounds 52-60 grouped 1.00 , .942 , and .661 inches with 173 grain M118 Match at 2554 fps . Hope to improve as barrel breaks in and I practice. Any comments or advice are appreciated.

you have a shooter on your hands, the weakest link of that whole system right now is the hogue stock. It will work pretty good until funds allow you to upgrade it. But you got it right practice and those groups will shrink down a little. I would recommend that you sign up for the online training hosted here

Congrats,

+1 on the stock being the week link. You may want to find a B&C, HS Precision or McMillan to make it more sturdy. You can sometimes find 700PSS take off stocks which I believe are HS Precision for a reasonable price. Other popular alternatives are the Choate Super Sniper Stock, Super Varmint Stock and their new Choate Tactical stock. I have one of the Choate Tacticals and it is a great stock, expecially for $189 shipped.

Best of luck!

I disagree. Although that srock is not the best on the market I do not think that is the weakest link in your set up, your ammo is. That particular rifle loves 168gr Federal gold metal and Black hills 168gr. I had one that with said factory ammo would shoot consistent 1/2moa or better. With handloads it would dip into 1/4moa. All I did was tune the trigger and bed the recoil lug area (that stock comes with aluminum pillars). I don't think the m118 is a good fit for that particular rifle.

Re: 1st Rifle: SPS-T and Range Report

It was only 82 degrees up there today? The shadows don't look that long, looks mid day in the photo. We won't see 82 degree highs for another two months at least. I love 82 degrees...

I have a very similar set up and find it hard to beat for the money. With the B&C stock and a Rifle Basix trigger being about the main differences.

I like mine so much, I'm tempted to buy another in case Remington does something stupid; like discontinue the model!

Try shooting five shot groups and the Snipers Hide tactical targets with that stick. It's a real challenge and you'll find your skill level improving.

Look here for targets,

I would try the Federal Gold match 168 grain bthp as well and see how she groups.......I'm a big fan of handloads and I think you could do alot better on the grouping with you reloading. And save some money......SmokeRolls

Re: 1st Rifle: SPS-T and Range Report

Ive got the same rifle, I put a Centerpoint scope from wally world on it and run hand loads and including the cold bore at 100 yards a 5 shot group the other morning was completely covered by a dime, so that a .705 group including the cold bore and the diameter of the bullet, take the .308 bullet diameter out of that measurement and its a .397 group.

Oh yeah thats shooting a 155smk over 46.1 grains of Varget in Winchester brass with a winlrp case trimmed to 2.05 and a COAL of 2.825

Re: 1st Rifle: SPS-T and Range Report

was your barrel clean at rounds 52-60 or did you shoot 51 rounds without cleaning? Rem barrels take a long time to brake in and i would think your barrel is full of copper. Just a thought. Lee

Re: 1st Rifle: SPS-T and Range Report

The rifle was cleaned roughly every 10 rounds during this first range day. I plan on trying some of the 168 grn. GMM and black hills ASAP but nobody can keep it in stock locally so i'll make an order online. Next step in the project will be stock replacement, just taking it one step at a time.

Re: 1st Rifle: SPS-T and Range Report

Nice stick.

The #1 thing that made me a more consistent shooter outside of practice was a new trigger. I did not like the XMark and went with RB.

The #1 thing that helped the rifle was HS stock.

The biggest help for the whole was Federal GMM ammo. Everything constant, after a box of AE to warm up averaged over 1moa, tried GMM box and dropped to .6moa - .75moa that same day.

It took my factory Rem tube around 300 yards to get consistent and tight.

My 700 likes a dirty barrel, I have about 1100 rounds down the tube and since round 300, rifle has been cleaned once which took about 50 rounds to tighten back up. Somewhere around round count 800 I got my best 3 shot and 5 shot groups. Since, I have not been to the range much, I use to go every Tues and Wed, now its once a month.

Good luck

Re: 1st Rifle: SPS-T and Range Report

I was shooting one of these the other day that a friend got for shooting around his farm. He didn't have a scope for it so I put an old leupold 2x7 on it just to get it going and see how it shot. I zeroed at 50 yards to get on paper, and was surprised with the one hole groups that I was getting with lithuanian surplus off a bench. I had two rounds in the same hole at fifty and let another fellow standing there shoot four more at the same point of aim, and he widened that group to a half inch. I was impressed that the two different shooters could do that with surplus.

We moved back to 100 yards and the groups immediately were shotgun like, so I let the other guy shoot it and it was worse this was when I noticed the stock flopping around and pressing on the barrel intermittently. I called it a day and took it home to put an old BDL wood stock I had at the house on it. I shot it prone off the bipod the next day in the wood stock and was getting pretty consistant groups of five shots between 5/8 and 3/4 inch. The last one I shot was six rounds inside the one inch square I was shooting at. I called it a day as my shoulder was pretty sore after the 120 rounds I had shot over those two days, 80 of wich were with the wood stock with hard butt instead of rubber.

The owner is looking for a HS stock and has gotten a falcon 4-14 menace I believe to put on it. I personally was very happy with the wood stock and little leupold 2x7. It made for a very accurate, quick handling, and light walking around type of rifle. I wish I had weighed it before the falcon went on. This is the second remington that I have shot that really liked surplus ammo, the first was a 700P that shot consistantly under an inch with portugese surplus. This one really like the lithuanian. This is of ourse at 100 yards and I don't have any experience at 200 as the corn is up. I like it so much I am thinking about getting one and putting it in my wood stock with something light for a scope.
