I have a .300 BO bolt gun that needs a scope, and I'm leaning toward a 2-10X, or there about. It's just a range gun for fun, and 300 yds will probably be the farthest it ever gets shot, since it's gonna be pretty much a subsonic bullet launcher. What I want is a mil/mil set-up, with a usable reticle, illumination is a plus, but not required, and I don't want an optic that is bigger than the gun, and I'd like to keep the price at $1k or under. So far I've looked at the Vortex PST, the Burris XTR, and the NF SHV (unfortunately it looks like it only comes in MOA). Are there any other options I'm missing, before I make an order?

I love my NXS 2.5-10x42. I know it’s over what you were looking at but @gr8fuldoug is doing a one day today. I’d give him a call and maybe it’ll be worth it to budge upwards. Even at full price it’s worth every penny. Second choice would be a Vortex PSTG1/G2 2.5-10X32. Excellent reticle as well and the rest is good too.

I'd go for the Burris XTR II 2-10x42 probably, although it is not a small scope.

There are some really compact 3-12x44 designs out there, but I do not think any of them are illuminated. I will likely test one (US Optics' TS-12) soon, but I ahve on personal experience with these yet.

Honestly, I would seriously consider finding a used PST Gen 1 2.5-10x32 somewhere. It was a really nice little scope. Probably the best optimized of the PST Gen 1 line.

@koshkin, I agree on the Burris being a little on the large size, if they had made it with a 30mm tube I would've already bought one! I didn't think about the Gen 1 PST either, good call there.
I appreciate the offers that have been made, just not exactly what I'm looking for.
Those damn budgets always get in the way! I could always wait a little while, and see if a good deal on something used pops up, or just save a little longer as well. As always there are other projects in the pipe line that need to get done, too many irons in the fire at one time I suppose.

I can’t speak to the PST Gen II 2.5-10, but I did have an HSLR 2.5-10x32 FFP which was essentially a PST Gen I with some small differences. It was a great scope for the money for what I used it for. I have since upgraded to the Burris XTR II 2.5-10 and could not be happier. It is bigger and heavier, but it fills the role that I use it in very well. I don’t mind the weight and prefer the turrets and reticle on the Burris.

I have only looked through the SHV, and that has been a while back but I don’t remember being disappointed. I am sure that you will be happy with any of the ones that you are looking at.

First time I saw the USO, which is why I asked about scopes, sometimes there are things out there that I missed. The USO is a cool concept, if they could have made it anywhere but China I'd give it a closer look.

I completely understand. if they made it here in NC, and it was like $700 or so id still buy it, still given the fact that I still haven't mounted it and shot. but the hands on I really do like it. clear glass, and clicks are more noticeable then my mark 4 4.5-14x50

SWFA 3-9x42 is a great option at $600 new and weighing just under 20oz. Pick up a set of zero stops from Timk on here and you’re good to go. These are great optics for what you’re paying for.

Arken also has an optic with your parameters. Have not heard any good or bad though.

SWFA 3-9x42 i an excellent scope. I have two of them, one with MilDot from the very first production batch (serial number 006) and another with MilQuad. However, he asked for illumination. If he can live without illumination, this one would be close to the top of the list.
