My son got a Henry Youth when he was one, and my daughter got a 22/45 Lite when she was about eight.
Their Grandpa ordered the Brownings as soon as they found out we were having twins (got them for all three of h is daughters and now all 9 grandkids).
It's great. 2 years ago I got divorced, now I basically have 2 stepsons (17 and 8) and now twins. Not to mention the most amazing women in the world.
Good on you Daddy. Enjoy the next 18 years, they are going to blaze by in the blink of a eye.

Gawd.......No shit. when my wife was preggers with our daughter, she said "the most important time was between birth and about 4 years old". She couldn't have been more correct. (She had a son from a previous marriage, so she had experience on the subject). Make it count for all it's worth, there's no setting the clock back.

Hey, but I inferr that you are to some degree looking after the Stepsons. Provided I understand correctly, BIG PROPS to you. Stick with them. They will grow up to adore you. (Forget about their disposition between about 13/14 and 17/18. They are not human during that time period). By about 21, you will be a saint in their eyes. Always take the high road. If mama is a bitch, they will grow, learn and see through the BS. You will be their hero. Very fulfilling. Been there, done that.
Their mother is amazing. Before we got together she was a single mom juggling 2 kids, work and school. Between here being a Marine and me being a LEO we keep them on line lol. But they are great kids. The 17 year old is actually doing his Junior and Senior years of high school at Ball State University (one of those smart kids?).Phew !........shit!.........close call!........

That's awsome. Her shitbag ex-husband had the 8 year old hooked on video games. I finally got him to get out in the woods with me this summer and now he always wants to go out. He was never interested in firearms either but I had him go out and shit my .22 before he had his shootery for Cube Scouts and he's hooked. I built him a starter 10/22 for Christmas.
My kid started bow hunting with me at 4 and now I can't go in the woods without my tag along. His love for hunting has gotten me back into it that's for sure.

Congrats! I have a daughter that will be 3 this spring and one of the best things I have ever experienced in life so far.

Prepare to get puked on.
Prepare for poop under the fingernails.
Get used to "new smells". Quickly. It is important you get on board with this. You will lose this battle. Everyone does. If you resist, it will be that much harder on you in the long run.
Prepare to make and administer formula that you have no idea how it could sustain any form of life, human or otherwise.
Get used to Hamburger Helper and kissing the ass of people (inlaws) that feed you food that you could only dream about being able to afford. I actually like Hamburger Helper to this day. Tastes better than ass....
Make sure you have a good health insurance program from your employer. If lacking, sign up for supplemental. Even if you don't use it, make sure your kid(s) have regular visits to the doctor and they are in good shape/condition.
Do not idly stand in or block doorways or stairwells.
Prepare for very little sleep. You'll live. It just won't seem that way. It will get better (in the blink of an eye).
Never let them misbehave (scream/throw temper tantrums) in public places, particularly airplanes. (I fly/travel a lot and detest parents of screaming kids).
Prepare for intimacy with your family that can never be duplicated.
Prepare for fulfilment that you and your wife/partner will never have with anyone else. Ever.
Never take your wife/life partner for granted. Always assume she is working harder than you, because she usually is. If not, there is a big problem and is outside the scope of this post/thread.
Get a dog. Size/breed is a personal preference and not allowed to be criticized/scrutinized by others. You want a Newfoundland ? Get a Newfoundland. I did. Fuck anyone that doesn't like it. Chihuahuas ? Thats a different story.
Never, ever, under any circumstances, no matter how frustrated you might become, abuse anyone, particularly a child. Period.

Simple things matter.

Support your partner and take the wheel when (preferrably before) they become weary of looking after the little ones. Never take her for granted. If you do, expect that she will return the favor. Usually, in a very unpleasant manner.
Never, ever, cease forward motion at, or around the bottom of an escalator.
Prepare to be the biggest, most important, most comforting, most satisfying part of a new human being's new life.
When in line, always have your money ready before you get to the ticket window.
It is life altering (for the better) and just amazing. It is a lot of work, but one of the most satisfying, yet humbling things you will ever do.
You will make mistakes. Everyone does. Always strive to do the right thing and do the best you can. All the little shit will come out in the wash.
Never cease forward motion/walking in the middle of an aisle, passageway, or sidewalk. Move off to the side, then stop. I don’t care if you can’t find your airplane ticket or Starbucks card. Tough shit, stay out of other people’s way.
Be very wary of "experts" on the subject of raising children, including me. However, I'm not an expert, so you can trust me. (see below).
Never trust anyone that says "Trust me". Not even me. Not for a minute.
There's a lot more, but you get the gist of it. Now, just go do it, get started. No one else started out as anything other than a novice, regardless of what they may have told you.

Like TH308 said, there will be spans of time in their early years when you will pound your head against a wall. However, at about 21, give or take, the phone will ring and a voice will say "Dad, I have a question.....".
Makes it all worthwhile.

You are not ready. I don't think anyone ever really is. But you'll get there. They really start getting fun about three when they start developing their personalities. Until then, re-read what Threadcutter posted, not much I can add to that.
Both mine have been diagnosed as high-functioning autistic but are scary smart. It will be a little longer before I can take them to the range with me (built them both AR's, but they'll start on .22's). Hope you can get yours out earlier.
Oh yeah: Keep them off social media and away from electronic toys as much as possible

Definitely congratulations! I met my soul mate (married 45 years this year), have 4 fabulous children / all great spouses and 8 amazing grandchildren.
All I can say is invest in them heavily, the return is extreme satisfaction and a contented life that is difficult to explain but easy to enjoy.
They will all visit this summer and yes, they all love to shoot!

ALL are shooters and Pa supplies the guns and ammo up to a point. I require them all to maintain a basic load and show me they are proficient on the range yearly.
I have a 7 month old Grandson that I took a 10/22 to when he came home from the hospital, much to the dismay of his Mother who wanted diapers and wipes and shit like that.[Pa bought her a rifle too years ago and backed off a bunch of that Long Island thinking. so she is a shooter too.]
Buy them good guns now, when you can afford them and they are available.
They last a hell of a lot longer than diapers, those are the shits, and the kids will grow up to be great as long as you do your part.

Well after 4 weeks in the Neonatal intensive care unit we finally got to come home today. So great to have out family back together at home.
