20" 7-08 Gas gun

I wanted to know how the owners of 20" 7-08 gas guns like them and what are your rifle specs. I have been playing with my ballistic program and it looks like this is the optimal caliber for the platform. It looks great ballistically and if you could push the 175g (not sure if the bullet would work) SMK at 2600 you would have 700+ ft pounds of energy left at 1000.

I have a 260 barrel on the way but I think I made a mistake.

Why? Lots of good 260 bullets out there and IIRC brass can be formed from 7-08, 243 or just buy factory 260rem brass.

I can put 140gr Berger VLDs out of my 24" .260 REPR at 2750fps.
they should still be carrying 696lbs of energy at 1000 yards.

i dont know much about the 7-08 ballistics, but it seems that your not giving up much for a flatter shooting .260 with less recoil.

I think 2600 fps is being a little optimistic with that bullet. The 162 amax would probably be a better option. I like the idea though.

You are going to have a problem getting higher velocities with the 7mm because of the COAL. The bullet has to be shoved in the case hindering powder more than likely.

The good thing about the 7mm over the 6.5's is the barrel life.

6xc is the optimal round, not caliber, for the large chassis AR, according to the AR expert Glenn Zediker.

Or, Robert Whitley does a 6m/m for large chassis that's supposed to be even better than xc. Take a look. The 6mm Super LR Cartridge

I was going to go the 7-08 route for my gasser and boltgun, but diverted to 6.5 Creedmoor for both.

The 7-08 ran into pressure problems before I could get enough speed to take advantage of the better BC bullets.

Its looking like my 6.5CM will run 139 Scenars at 2820 in my boltgun and 2620 in my 20" POF with the exact same load, and that's a nice low pressure load that should give me lots of accurate life....

My "mistake" I thought is that I bought a 20" barrel. If I can run the Scenar at the same speed as Soberbiker from my .260 I can get the benefit of the .260. I didn't think they would run this fast out of a 20" gas gun though.

The 162g Amax @2600 looks real good on paper. Same ballistics as the Scenar but with 117 Ft pounds more energy (734 @ 1000). I guess the only advantage other than barrel life is that it will ring steel a little louder.

Could 2600 be made with the 162 amax in a 20-22" barrel?
This thread stoked my interest in the 7-08 again.

The 139 scenar @2620 is pretty good but damn they are $40/box.
Hornady's 6.5mm amax's don't seem to have quite as good of a BC. But if the 162 could be pushed to 2600 that would be awesome to me.

Of course I would probably be whacking the occasional hog along with shooting steel so the extra energy is always helpful.

It'd be tough (but maybe doable) getting a 162 Amax to 2600 at a length that'd feed from a gasgun mag-I needed to go 2.910" to keep from popping primers in my 22" boltgun, but that was 2700-2725fps.
Maybe someone that runs a 7-08 gasser will come along and share.
