I'm fairly new to the forum, so please excuse and redirect me if this question has already been asked, I searched to no avail. I am purchasing a Bushnell ET HDMR 3.5-21x with the Horus H-59 reticle to top my LaRue Stealth Sniper System in 5.56. I'm toying with the idea of putting a 20 MOA base on the rifle from American Defense, would you find it helpful to go with the 20 MOA base? I routinly shoot out to and past 700yds with my 77g SMK hand-loads and I have found that it has fairly significant bullet drop out past 700yds. Any advice/experience would be appreciated, thanks!

Well, I tried using my AR-15 (with the 77-gr Sierra bullets) at a match with targets that went out to 600 yards. With my older Leupold 6.5-20 cranked all the way up, I was still hitting a couple feet low at 600. So if you regularly shoot at long range, I would recommend getting the 20 MOA base.

I have a 20 MOA rail on my Savage .223 shooting 70 GR VLD Berger. I also reach out there------up to 800 yards.
Run a Mk6 3-18 in standard rings on my Mk12, will reach out till 900 or so, scope has a fairly decent amount of elevation travel, definitely need a 20moa base if I was trying for a 1000. How much travel in the Bushnell, as you already know its hard to spot those 77 hits on steel at distance.
Pretty much if its a wash on price, always go with the 20 moa base with a long range rifle. Just about any 30mm scope suitable for long range shooting will work with that base.
I shoot those SMKs to 1 km pretty regularly and it's a 14.4 mil, 50 moa solution. You have to pull your muffs back to hear the clang, but you have plenty of time to do it.
With that Bushnell you could do it without the 20 moa base on the turrets and reticle, but you'll be working closer to the center of the scopes travel at longer ranges if you do use it.
Just running the numbers a bit for my own 5.56 setup and I am drawn the the 10moa base options. There are not many but I like the LaRue. Seems like with 10moa I will be in the center of the adjustment range for most of the shooting I do with my AR at 350-550 yards yet still have enough adjustment to get to past the subsonic barrier with any ammo I choose.

You shoot a .223 to 1km??? That's very impressive!!!
A 20 MOA base in combination with a Vortex 6-24x50 PST gets me out to 1300yds with Berger 90VLDs out of my 223 AI. Yet I have no problem getting a 100yd zero with the rifle, so far as I'm concerned, there's no downside to the sloped base.
The F TR guys wouldn't be overly impressed.
I embellished, that's the firing solution for 1070 yards. We have another firing position 100 yards back, so it averages out.
A waste of bullets to some, but I've learned a lot doing it and it's cheap entertainment. Hardest part was finding a place to do it.
