200 yards with rimfire

Finally had a no wind morning so I gave the Lapua Biathlon Xtreme a try.
50 shots at 200 yards with a CZ 455 Varmint, Lilja barrel, Sinclair bipod and bag

This box was extremely erratic as the results and chrony numbers show.

Aerodynamic Jump is what Applied Ballistics refers to this variable as. For a 22lr...yeah... now its really a role to be considered. Could turn out to be hard to account for from shot-to-shot until one collects enough data and begins to prove it to your self/ become a wind whisperer

First is just to the left of the bench.
Four more spaced at 40 yard intervals.
Last is on the top of the frame.
All to the left of my sight line.
Pole bean canes with bent coat hanger and surveyors flagging.
Cheap, effective, shows updraft and downdraft when turbulence rolls through.

Thank you. My first attempt was a handful of surveyors flags, but that wasn't much help. Yours is quick and easy and will be much more helpful.
Is the target flag high enough to indicate head/tail winds? It looks like the target would block a head wind. Does it indicate any updraft when you have a tailwind?

The canes come in 6 foot lengths.
Mine have been cut to 4 foot lengths.
This puts the flags at about 44 inches above ground level.
The canes are hollow so the wire hangers slip in the open end
and move to follow wind direction.
Flagging is just long enough to not tangle with the canes.
Any breeze will move the ribbons and will lift them
when the roof over the line starts shedding vortices.

What would happen if you had to shoot for score at 200 yards?
How well do you think you could do with rimfire?
5 targets, 10 shots per target, best edge scoring.
It'd still be 50 shots at 200 yards, right? :D

These were shot using CCI A22 35 grain JSP 22wmr rated 2100 fps.
455 SOF, Feddersen barrel, Mueller 8-32x44 target scope
Sinclair bipod, wind flags and the chronograph out front.

Chronied 2160 fps high, 2091 fps average, 1975 fps low for the 50 shots

The 10 ring is 1 inch diameter
The 1 ring is 7.5 inch diameter

Not too bad for 22wmr, 5.5 inches of horizontal, about 6 inches of vertical.
Figure on 2 inches of spread at 100 yards, about 5/8 inch at 50 yards.

10 shots for score, at 200 yards, best edge scoring with rimfire.
Feel like giving it a try?

Here's the targets to be used:

10-200Red

Download the pdf, open, print actual size (100%) 8.5x11
Outer border measures 7.5 inches by 10 inches as a check

Now, for today's giggle.

Would you pay a dollar a shot for 22 wmr?

Seriously, that's what RWS is charging for the limited amount of 40 grain JSP and FMJ 22 wmr that they have in stock.

I'm not saying that I'm nucking futs, but I might be right on the borderline. :D

Yep, I ordered a couple boxes of each....can't offer an opinion if you never try it, right?

200 yards, chronograph out front, 50 shots at a single aimpoint.

A dollar a cartridge and it's packed as bulk ammo, just like Winchester 22wmr. :(
Not a good sign....not at all.

A buck a shot! I can do that bad for 20 cents a shot using CCI.
Oh well...I figure it as an educational expense.
Can't talk intelligently about what you've never done.
Now I can.

230 fps ES and 270 fps ES...dayyyyuuummm!

Might save some of you the expense of trying it for y'erself.

I've tried all the brands of 22 wmr.
No one makes anything but short range critter thumpers.
Center of chest out to 75 yards, no problem.

The more I see posts like the one above the more I'm glad I built a 20-221FB AI! I was hitting a rock about a foot tall at 650Y last weekend no problem with 32's/.210BC at 3735 fps. Does 1" groups at 200Y in a lightweight sporter. Itty bitty centerfire cartridges rock man!!!

Some friends and I bought 10,000 RWS target 22's for $2.85/50 box. The stuff shoots pretty good at 50Y and by 200M it sucks, like 9" vertical. There's a part of me that is intrigued with shooting 22 rimfires at long range and there's the other part of me that hates it, lol. Why do we put ourselves through this?!

Why? Because it's cheap entertainment.
Also, it allows me to get over the yips, before I set up my centerfire rig.
50 rounds of rimfire puts me back where I need to be.
Calm, relaxed, paying attention to the details that produces better control behind the trigger.

I appreciate all the info you've shared with us and I learned a lot. Too each his own as they say....

I side stepped rimfires a bit by enjoying PCP's air rifles and little centerfires for some of the reasons you gave and some of my own.

By 10 am the mirage was in effect here in NE Florida.
200 yards with the 455 Varmint, Lilja, Sinclair bipod and Mueller8-32x44 target scope.
I blame the mirage for my senior moment.
Somewhere in the course of sending 50 shots,
I sent 15 of them at the wrong aimpoint.
Couldn't see the shot pattern due to the shimmer,
didn't find out until I walked down to get the target. D'oh!

4 inches of spread is acceptable, with the mirage messing with me.

It wasn't me, I don't own a rig that nice. :(
Very nice 200 yd group for 22rf,I do a-lot of 22rf shooting out to 400 yds and I would be very happy with that grouping at 200yds.

The thing to remember, is we are dependent of the quality of the ammo sold.
Be it 50, 100, 200 yards or more, results are based on the factory rimfire production line.
Even the best rifle won't make low quality cartridges more consistent.
Second rate ammo produces second rate results, even from a first class rig.
Claims of "all day long" or "laser" are impossible to substantiate
when all of us know just much how rimfire ammo production varies.
Get a good batch, great things happen.
Get a batch where the quality control was substandard
results on target will be dismal.
No matter how great y'er rifle is. :(

No, actually basing my remarks on actually trying every brand of rimfire 22lr, 17 hmr, 17 wsm and 22wmr ammunition available.
At 50, 100 and 200 yards across a ballistic chronograph and tracking target results and MV numbers.
It's a shame you are unable to defend your opinion using actual facts or hard data.
But that's y'er perogative.
I prefer to substantiate my claims with repeatable results.
Not base them on acts of random accuracy.
It's mass produced assembly line rimfire, not custom handloads.
Enjoy y'er evening.

As my grandad said many years ago, when I was talking about how great my first 22 was...

Don't talk about it boy, show me.

Take y'er favorite rig to y'er favorite range, use y'er favorite rimfire ammo at 200 yards.
Set that chronograph out front and record those numbers.
Post those results here.

Be interesting to see how well you do when the chrony shows an ES in excess of 200 fps.

I'll be one of the first to admit I was wrong and that a first class rifle can make crap ammo shoot accurately.
Unlikely to happen, but I can hope you make the attempt...
Gnite BB.

Oh well, another one bites the dust.
Too bad, it was such a stimulating conversation. ;)

I shot this target at 200 yards with my M&P 15-22 and CCI Minimags (about 1-1/2 years ago). I held my cheap Primary Arms red dot scope (zeroed at 100) an estimated 20 inches over the top of the target. Used a bag in the front and rear. Not 50 shots, though.

1BD, at 100 yards looks to be the rifle and you are consistent.
Enough with shooting groups...time to up the difficulty.
Move on to shooting for score, see what happens over time.
10 shots, 10 bulls, best edge scoring to keep it interesting and challenging.
Tack 5 targets to the backer and see what happens during the process of shooting a box of 50.
Try this target and see what you can do...

Thanks just printed those targets, and will attempt next Thursday shoot.
Your right, I think at 100 yards will certainly be challenge I am looking forward to shoot.
Will post next Thursday results.
Going off to Walmart now to see if they special for the holiday's on 17MHR.
I was at Walmart last month and they had Remington Golden Bucket 1,400 rounds for $62.00 each and bought 5 of them, for when I go to the indoor range with Ruger Mark III Hunter with Match dot scope and all kinds of mods.
Thanks for target!

Since you're going to Walmart anyway, drop by their office supply section and buy some "reinforcement labels." ( The little doughnut looking things you use to reinforce the holes in notebook paper). The inner hole is approx. 1/4 " while the whole label is 1/2" You can buy a couple of 100 of them for under $2. Stick them on a piece of paper and you got targets. And their small size reinforces that whole "aim small/miss small" thing.

Also available are little (1/4") smiley face stickers which make good short-range targets.

And pick up some price stickers. They come in a roll of several 100. You write prices on then and stick them on stuff you'd sell at a yard sale. They come in bright colors and are just slightly over an inch is diameter. They make great targets for longer ranges and I don't know how many times I've stripped of a dozen of the stickers and given them to others who come to the range without targets (wtf?).

For under $5 you've got 100's of targets that fit into a pocket of your range bag.

Could it be that not all of us have convenient access to areas where further distances are possible, safe, allowed?

I know, Captain Oblivious rides again. ;)
Understandable, wasn’t trying to step on any toes but for a 22 things are just starting to get fun at 200. If you come across a place to shoot longer distance you should definitely go for it and continue to push yourself.

No worries PS.
I've got my steel toed boots on. :D

I get out to the family farm on a regular basis.
We indulge in a bit of hey y'all, watch this.
5 gallon steel buckets at various intervals along the field haul roads.
Lobbing 22lr at the nearest buckets first,
then walking rounds in on the further ones.
Entertaining way to spend an afternoon.

As the picture shows, visible cartridge defects.
Dents, dings, differences in bullet seating and drive bands.
When the nose is beat up, so is the heel of the bullet.
That's how CCI transfers components on the factory floor, dump from bin to bin.
Can't expect repeatable trajectories when the bullets are all shaped differently. :(

That stray, way to the left, came from a dinged up round.
Visibly more dented than the previous few.
No surprise when it hit away from all the rest.
Cartridge defects explain most of the spread.
127 fps ES explains the vertical spread. :(

Don't blame the rifle, or yourself, for poor results
when the ammunition is visibly to blame.

ES of 33 fps, but the visible imperfections on the hollow points
causes spreading of the trajectories.

Well I finally had my opportunity to contribute to this thread. I was able to spend a good portion of a HOT and HUMID (for the peoples republik of marylandistan) Sunday at the range running a bunch of different ammo through my 457 VPT. While I doubt that I was any where at scientific as the rest of you all I thought it might be helpful for me to put my data out there too. I used the following protocol to test. I shot 50 shots at a single aiming point at 200 yards. I used an 8.5" x 11" sheet of printer paper with a reduced IPSC as my target. I shot 5x 10 round groups with only the down time to reload the mag between each. I then took about a 5 minute break between boxes of ammo. I used a Magneto Speed Chronograph to get my data and used Ballistics ARC with a WeatherFlow meter to get my environmental data. I tested all the Eley ammo first and then all the SK Ammo. Needless to say, it was a fun and interesting learning experience.

I tested the following
2 different lots of Eley Force
Eley Contact
Eley Club
Eley Edge
2 different lots of SK Std Plus
SK Rifle Match
SK Long Range Match

MD, did you run the numbers to compare vertical spread to ES?

And where are my rifle pron pics?
Range and setup images so I can obsess over the facility,
the gear and the chronograph.
Very important, eh? ;)

i did not run the numbers yet but just eyeballing the group size and comparing to the ES I can see the correlation. The lower ES for sure have a smaller vertical spread.

In terms of facility, I was bad and did not take a picture of the range. Next time I go out, I will take one and add it to the post.

Here is a pic of the rifle and the ammo, I shot off of an Atlas CAL bipod and used an Armageddon Gear Game Changer as a rear bag.

OK, here's my effort.
SK Pistol Match Special (because Jaia showed it to be a good round at 200 :) )

I was actually trying to calibrate Strelok Pro so i'd shoot 10 at the 200m target then 5 at 50m then back to the 200m target - rinse and repeat.

No chrono data unfortunately. (don't own one :) )

the setup looks like this. rifle aimed at the 50m target, 200m is top left

200 yards using rimfire is not solely for rifles.
I find it entertaining to use a semi-auto pistol as well.
Admittedly my results aren't as tight as those shot with the rifle
but they do stay on paper and the 14 inch diameter steel is no problem to ping, shot after shot.

Buckmark Silhouette, Burris EER scope with 20 moa rings on a heavy bag
200 yards with an 8-12 mph wind at my 2 o'clock.

Even with my minimal skill with pistols, it's not hard to stay on paper.

Hmmm??? While there's no doubt that Winchester is producing Browning's LR ammo, this is interesting in that it looks like a little twist in what Winchester is doing for the Browning label. Winchester 37 gr Super X Super Speed ball has a much smaller hollow point than what I can see in this photo. The photo looks like the normally large Winchester HP one would see in their Power Point or bulk HP product. Given their poor QC, makes me wonder if they've got some of their 36 gr HP's mixed up there. . . .??? ?
