Re: 208 a-max 1 in 12 twist???
I've never hunted anything with the 208 AMax. It is a rather thin-skinned bullet. At 308 velocities it probably would dig fairly well, given the mass, and relatively slow impact velocity. At 300 WinMag/WBY/RUM velocities it would probably disintegrate in dramatic fashion if it hits heavy bone.
Not bashing, or wanting to reignite the whole "match bullets for hunting" debate. We all make our choices and operate within the constraints imposed by our bullets. I'm not bothered by anyone elses choice, but for me, I tend to lean toward realistic ranges inside 400 yards, shot angles won't always be broadside, and a quality hunting bullet leaves more options on the table.
Shooting/ballistics is more my passion than hunting. That said, I have a box of 200gr Accubonds that I'm going to work up a hunting load with. An old Marine friend is coming to visit this fall, and a good muley/elk load is in order. I'm kind of leaning toward the 200gr Accubond at about 2500 fps, but I'll probabaly also work up a load with 168 TTSX at 2750, or so. Either should be fine at the distances I would shoot.
Here's some of the elk country around here. Some shitty pics, but I took them from the house, holding a pocket camera up to the spotting scope. Subject 2-4 miles away (375 Chey-Tac????......grin).
