My AI AE didnt like em 3/4 to 1 moa wich i guess isnt terrible but 175 and 155 are well under 1/4 so im headed back that direction just my 2 cents. was shooting 45gr R-15,large primers cci,win brass Have a good one

Sir , what length is your 308's barrel? 22"? </div></div>

It was 22" in that pic with the 1020 yd target. Originally a Rem factory 26" VS barrel. Since then I cut it off again at 20.5" and added a Thruster brake. Overall with brake is still 22".

Here's how it's set up for now, in an HTG with a VXIII 2.5-8x36 with M1s on top. Im going to see if this works on steel out to 1K or so. Has the elevation travel, but have to see what I think about 8X at the top end. This is fairly handy size/weight, has alloy M4 floorplate, and alloy base rings.

It's a handy rifle to take for a walk up the hill.

Re: 208 a-max 1 in 12 twist???

1/12 has to be very close to the edge with the 208 at 308 Win velocities. My 100 yard target was about .75-1.0 moa too. Not anything too special. They really impressed me at 560, and 1120 yards though. I also shoot the 155 Scenar, it's a good bullet too but I like the way the 208 rides the wind, despite modest MV.

Re: 208 a-max 1 in 12 twist???

1. You don't need to shoot an Elk at 1000 yards.
2. No Match Bullet will penetrate heavy shoulder or pelvic bones on an Elk
3. A 308 is a fine Elk rifle within 300 yards with the proper bullets like a premium controlled expansion (Barnes, A Frame, Partition)
4. Elk are big, a 2 MOA rifle will kill any Elk that is shot within ethical range.

Shooting big game at long range is not hunting, it is long range target practice on live targets.

There is "nowhere" in WY that you can't get within 300 yards of any Elk that lives.... Even on the Red Desert.

Don't bother "flaming" me as I won't take the bait.

Re: 208 a-max 1 in 12 twist???

I've never hunted anything with the 208 AMax. It is a rather thin-skinned bullet. At 308 velocities it probably would dig fairly well, given the mass, and relatively slow impact velocity. At 300 WinMag/WBY/RUM velocities it would probably disintegrate in dramatic fashion if it hits heavy bone.

Not bashing, or wanting to reignite the whole "match bullets for hunting" debate. We all make our choices and operate within the constraints imposed by our bullets. I'm not bothered by anyone elses choice, but for me, I tend to lean toward realistic ranges inside 400 yards, shot angles won't always be broadside, and a quality hunting bullet leaves more options on the table.

Shooting/ballistics is more my passion than hunting. That said, I have a box of 200gr Accubonds that I'm going to work up a hunting load with. An old Marine friend is coming to visit this fall, and a good muley/elk load is in order. I'm kind of leaning toward the 200gr Accubond at about 2500 fps, but I'll probabaly also work up a load with 168 TTSX at 2750, or so. Either should be fine at the distances I would shoot.

Here's some of the elk country around here. Some shitty pics, but I took them from the house, holding a pocket camera up to the spotting scope. Subject 2-4 miles away (375 Chey-Tac????......grin).

Re: 208 a-max 1 in 12 twist???

thinking about mule deer and whitetail or even a pronghorn. I have a freind who has some private land in colorado, sending off for for tags next week. looks like in a 300wsm in a 208 around 2900fps should be just enough to get-r-done.

hombre and JLM :

this bull elk was shot by my brother in law with my surgeon .308 and a 208 gr. A-MAX at a range of 525 meters. the bullet entered the left front shoulder and exited the right front shoulder leaving a tennis ball size hole. both shoulders were broke and he dropped on the spot and never blinked.

Re: 208 a-max 1 in 12 twist???

that would be a dream hunt for me. I have never hunted anything other than the whitetail as far as big game. can't wait to go to co. this fall and have a chance to shoot a nice mule deer. maybe one of these days i can make it out to montana or wyoming or even alaska. anyway, thanks for the great pics and info

Can't argue with results like that.

Great looking animal and country.

Re: 208 a-max 1 in 12 twist???

Thanks Shane,

The reason we shot at that distance was because this bunch of elk had been bumped and were trying to change zip codes. They staged long enough for us to set up the shot and make the shot.

Trust me the last thing i want to do is follow a wounded elk through the missouri breaks. Devin had been shooting my .308 all summer and had all the confidence in the world he could make the shot.

We back packed every ounce of meat three miles uphill and back to our camp the same day. I think there was a time or two that Devin wished he would have missed the shot!

Re: 208 a-max 1 in 12 twist???

The breaks are some work to walk around in for sure.

We've got 40 acres of land out in elk district 410, a few miles NE of Cat Creek on Lower River Road. Make it out there once or twice a year to camp. It's always amazing to me how effortlessly the elk move over that ground, compared to how it kicks my ass. When it's wet, it's a REAL mess.

Re: 208 a-max 1 in 12 twist???

You guys are on the west side of the musselshell . very nice area. I was stationed at jordan for 6 years and know the country on the east side of the river better than the west side.

really fun place to hunt elk... hard to draw the permit but when you do its a special hunt.

And your right its not a good place to be when its wet!!

Good luck shooting and hunting!
