I found a REM700 .22-250 VSS that has the factory Remington barrel. I could not find the twist rate on their website for the VSS but all the other rifle specs for the .22-250 have the twist rate at 14". I am trying to get a feel for what grain ammo may shoot the best. I personally was guessing 50gr. and less. Any .22-250 shooters out there that can share their experience would be much appreciated. I will be killin coyotes with it.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

My gun really likes lighter bullets I've been shooting 45 grain Win and some fed TNT 43 grain that shoot great out of my gun at paper the 55s are what I use hunting. They are good thru my gun but just shoot alittle tighter with lighter ones. Its a 1:14 with 26" barrel.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

You'll like the performance with 55gr Nosler BT, Hornady V-max, or Sierra BlitzKing.

Hornady 60gr HP will work also but the 55gr polymer tipped bullets are hard to beat.

Shot many a praire dog with bulk Rem 55gr HP bullets also.

Varget worked very well for me. RL-15, IMR4064, or N-140 would be worth trying, if you have any of those powders on hand.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

I have a rem 700 adl with a 24" factory tube. i've never checked the twist, but it shoots the "value" pack of the winchester 45gr jhp's very well. I've tried the 55's and it slings them all over.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

i have a r700 22-250. mine likes 40grs so far. i tried 55gr and it was all over the place. the best group i got from my loads so far were the 40 gr nosler ballistic tips.

not all rifles will be the same, my buddies 22-250 likes 52 grains. ha.

oh also, the winchester pack of 45grs is pretty good in my rifle as well.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

Thanks, I am trying to pic up some dies from a hider and will still need quite a few things still before I can reload. Factory loads will have to get me by for a while and your imput hopefully will save me some frustration and money.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

My coyote load is a 50grn sierra blitzking boat tail over 34.2 gr. Of hodgdon benchmark. My rifle is a Remington 700 bdl. This round is very accurate in my gun usually about 3/4 minute. Remember minute of coyote is a 7" circle with a good round. If you want to load alot of rounds for prairie dogs (i take no less than 500 just for the. 22-250), go to midsouth shooter supply you can get really good deals on bulk packs of psp.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

How about the new 53 gr Vmax? Higher BC than the 55 gr Vmax but lighter/faster.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

i had an identical gun and shot 55 vmax and 60 v max. imr 4064 was my powder of choice. the 60 grainers bucked the wind a little better at distance.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

I haven't got everything I need to begin reloading yet... I did pick up some of the Hornady Superformance 50gr. V-Max which according to their ballistics should be 4000 fps at the muzzle WOW. I am waiting for my Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50mm to get here so I can start shooting.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

i use a ruger MK II in 22-250AI. i went for the AI cartridge to slow case streching that i was getting it did that. i was using 50gr vmax running at around 4100fps but barrle only lasted 6000 round before i had to replace it now using 55gr Vmax at around 3800fps.
link to the pics i have put up for the old barrle that i had opend up.

Re: .22-250 ammo?

I don't have one yet. It is on my list of needed equipment. I think it will become very necessary to check myself so I load rounds on the lower end of the charts and work my way up.
