Just thought I would say hello first, and then ask if anyone here uses a 22 250, and if they load for it? I recently bought a Steyr SSG 69 P2 in this caliber, and so far I'm very impressed with the accuracy. I have an older P1 in .308 that is my go to, but I wanted something in a small bore bolt gun for shooting paper and "other stuff". TIA from another old retired Army dog...

Re: 22 250...

52SMK/34.1gr IMR-4064/Rem or Win brass/Match Primer.

Many a heart has been broken here on The 'Hide by the .22-250. It shoots so tantalizingly well for several rounds, but when you try to use it as a match round, the barrel overheats before you're halfway through your string of fire.

Re: 22 250...

I run a 22-250, although it's not an out of the box gun. I have a 1-7" twist which is about double most factory twist rates.

remy 700 trued
shilen select match 1-7 twist
winchester cases
cci large rifle primers
80gr Amax bullets
33.5grs of varget
3200fps

hits like a 16lb sledge hammer out to 1K, only heart breaking here is the one on the other end of my cross hairs!

Re: 22 250...

I use it for coyotes and prairie dogs. Works great. Mine is a Rem 700VSF, stock 1:14 twist barrel. Took a little work to get it to shoot: trigger adj. to 2.5 lbs, bedded the action, lapped the bolt lugs. Now with hand-loads (55gr VMAX, 36.2gr Varget, Rem Brass, CCI 200) I can constantly shoot 0.4-0.6" 5-shot groups at 100yd.

I also wouldn't use it for a match gun, as it does heat up pretty fast.

Re: 22 250...

with a 200 yrd zero head shots out to say 300yrd you should not have to do no more than aim for the top of the head.not that you could not do it further but drop and drrft will start to be more of a factor.

Re: 22 250...

Just bought a beater ADL from the local pawnshop today. I have some loads in new brass I will try out tomorrow. It is a sporter and I am going to put it in a McMillan with a 3-9 Leupold compact on top of the whole works.

It has been some years since I shot a 22-250 a lot, but most of 'em shoot pretty well and that is the "go to" rifle in my area for informal paper punching and groundhogs/coyotes.

Re: 22 250...

So far it has worked out that with a 200 yard zero, it is dead on for anything between 50, and 200 yards, and has about 6" of drop at 300. I shot a turkey in the eye at about 120, and was blown away with what the round did. My shooting buddy liked my rifle so much, that he ordred one just like it.(except for the set triggers) I went with a Zeiss conquest 6x20x50, and some Warne rings, so far I'm pretty happy with everything. Got my dies and some brass and powder yesterday, also some ballistic tip Nozlers in a 55 grain. I'm trying to get my load bench set up, so we can load some stuff. I'm a newb at reloading, but kinda excited about it. Any suggestions for a good scale?...

Re: 22 250...

I started reloading last year and got a rcbs 1500 digital scale which is the one compatible with the chargemaster. It was only about 8 months of fighting with my manual powder dispenser before I broke down and got the chargmaster to go with it. If you have the money I would buy the rcbs chargemaster combo its about $279 on sale. Some people have posted on here about problems with theirs but so far I love mine it speeds things up tremendously if you weigh every charge. It dispenses while I seat the bullet and by the time I put round in bullet box charge is ready to go. Hornady just released their version of it if you didn't like the rcbs.

Re: 22 250...

I looked through all my powders that I got with the press, and there is most of a jug of Varget. It lists 39.5 grains for a 40 gr B.T. at 4135fps, and 36.5 grains for a 55 gr at 3664 fps. That's almost identical to a 220 swift? Damn! I'm getting all my reloading stuff from an older gentleman that has had a stroke a while back, and he's basically giving me everything he's accumulated over the past 25 years. There's still 2 more pickup loads to go get, so I don't really know what all is there. I tried to pay him for it, but he says he's just glad it's gonna end up with someone who will use it, instead of being sold off in some garage sale after he's gone. I'm gonna try and sneak him out for a deer hunt one day soon, it would do him some good to get out of the house and ride around in the woods...

Re: 22 250...

Aw, poop!

Reading through this thread has caused me to gaze longingly at the several hundred (600... 700...?) pieces of orphan .22-250 brass that occupy their considerable space in 50rd pistol cartridge box bases under my loading bench. I even went so far as to walk next door to Dick's while my Wife was chaperoning our Granddaught in her final Christmas shopping spasm to Kohl's yesterday. Whereupon I actually gazed longly (and destitute) at an R700 SPS package rifle chambered in .22-250, and pursauded the counter guy to allow me to fondle it and surmize upon its non-specified rifling twist. Alas, he knew not, and defaulted to the inventory description which specified 'Varmint'. Our combined best guess was 1:12" or 1:14". Marked down to $499.99, and my Veterans' ID would have taken 10% off that...

Sigh...

PS, per the Rem website, 1:14"

Hopefully one day soon is now.... deer season is still open.

Re: 22 250...

the 22-250 sps is a 1-14 twist. i have a hand me down rem 700 22-250 bdl varmint from my dad, which he bought 35ish years ago and it has killed many 100's of chucks and i use the same load data he reloaded with

34.5g imr 4064 , 55g varmint flatbase bullet, winchester brass and winchester primer

Re: 22 250...

They are shit tons of fun! I had one and loved it. It got me hooked on this long range stuff and ultamatly was the event horizon of my wallet..

I went to 308 after the 22-250 was upset and then had APA build me a 6.5 L...its still not the same....there is nothing like disemboweling (probably not a word) a prarie dog with one....

Re: 22 250...

Earlier in this post, I mentioned the 22-250 I picked up at a pawnshop. It was a sporter. Well, since then I have picked up a VLS in same chambering that shoots like a house afire. Go figure! A month ago I did not own a '250 and now I have a pair.

Re: 22 250...

Went to the range last wednesday, and fired some 53 grain handloads and was blown away once again at the accuracy. A friend of mine got us invited to a private shootout at another friend's place outside of Houston. Beer cans at 300 yards, I think I just might be a contender if the wind is right...
