22/45 upgrades...

I just bought this 22/45 target model

What would you guys recommend. The first thing I am going to do, is put a hiviz or tacsol front sight on it. I was thinking some type of target grips maybe, any recomendations? In the future I might go with the tacsol upper too. If I were to put an optic on it should I go red dot, or pistol scope for shots to however far I can with it, what maybe 150-200yds, is that beyond its capabilities?

Any recommendations you guys might have would be appreciated, thanks.

The Tactical Solutions Upper is awesome. With the Tactical Solutions Upper installed the 22/45 almost feels like a toy because it is so light.

I put a TacSol 4" threaded upper with rail and sights on mine. I shoot it with SWR Spectre. Absolutely rockin set up.

I bought the Volquartsen hammer/sear/trigger kit for mine but then my gunsmith purchased hte Mk2 sear/hammer and put THOSE in to remove that magazine safety. Mine has a 1lb trigger, CRISP and clean, no caffeine...

I haven't done anything with my sites yet but this one far outshoots the one I shot in competition in the military (Mk2).

no, you buy the Mk 2 parts and put them in your mk 3. This disables all the BS features that never should have been there in the first place.. After installing a VQ mk2 trigger and hammer bushing in mine, it now drops mags free, fires sans mag inserted, and also has a lot nicer trigger pull with almost no reset and a nice crisp pull.

so in other words.. it runs like a normal gun.

Tacsol upper, threaded barrel and pic rail. I use a T1 on the rail and an AAC element screwed in front. Volquartsen action internals makes for a sweet trigger.

Because the spring for the magazine safety is a POS and bends way too easily and my smith knows me well enough to knwo I did not want it, so the Mk2 Sear and hammer (Maybe just sear and spring I forget) - they cure the problem with the mag safety...I never had it before and don't want it now.

It's the way to go, this thing is one sweet shooting pistol!

you don't need a smith, but it might save you a headache or two. You can use that kit, but it's not necessary to fixing the mag safety/relase issue. The bare minimum parts needed are the mk2 trigger and mk2 hammer bushing. When you take out and throw away all the BS parts, the Mk2 bushing will fill the void left behind. That's all I used, and it made things nice, although if you replace the sear and all that as well, like what Artic did, then it will be even nicer.

after looking at this i don't understand why you don't just polish your own sear and just order the bushing, take a end mill bit and lighten the trigger your self??? loks very very simple to me. i didn't get the video???

Holly shit, you are not kidding.

I picked it up this afternoon. Ca is keeping us safe by making us wait ten days to pick up firearms after they are bought. This really makes sense, being as I have a ccw, so why would I buy a new gun to go commit a crime with, when its apparent I already have one. ANYWAYS....

Initial impressions, gun functioned smoothly, triggers is the shits, I did not like the front sight either. So I took it off and replaced it with a hi viz front sight, and its a lot better now. The screw was red loc tited on there, so I damn near stripped the screw getting it out.

I was only able to put <100 rds down the barrel because it was almost dark when I got home. But it did jam on the second magazine. I am deffinetly going to get the whole trigger kit when I get paid again.

Now for the loaded chamber thing, how do I do a fill of it? Also, what holsters are you guys using for it ?

you can take a magnet and remove the pin. This will allow the whole assembly to be removed. all you need to remove is the largest of the two springs and the little metal piece in there. This will disable the loaded chamber indicator and prevent failures. Then just replace the plastic filler piece. black dog makes a nice holster that will acomodate an optic if you decide to go that route at a later date

I didn't do anything with my Mk III 5.5" and it's not bad for screwing around at longer ranges. I bought a "crap" Barska 2x as an afterthought and mounted it on the rig and went out with a generic ballistics program .1 BC/1200 mv and made 2-1st shots at 225 and 300 yds. One thing i did like is that the NC Star bipod comes with the hardware to mount the bipod right to the barrel, and POI didn't change at all.

I have done a few Ruger MKIII 22/45 Trigger Jobs. Basically what I have done is to use a Clark Custom Guns Ruger MKII Hammer Bushing. This is a tight fit and eliminates the MKIII Magazine Disconnect Safety. Due to the tight fit it also makes the trigger feel a bit better. Yes I used the Factory MKIII Hammer but did a slight bit of polishing to it.

I then installed a Volquartsen Custom Target Sear. If you compare the Volquartsen to the Factory Sear you will notice slight dimensional differences. These slight dimensional differences account for a much nicer trigger pull while eliminating some of the pre-travel take up.

As per the tab sticking out from the rear of the MKIII Trigger. It is designed as part of the Magazine Safety System and when the trigger is fully pulled to the rear this tab goes into a recess in the front of the magazine to ensure the magazine is fully seated. I simply removed the trigger and used my dremel to cut the tab off of the back of the trigger.

On one of the MKIII 22/45's I have done (and also on my MKII) I replaced the Factory Trigger with a Clark Custom Guns Steel Ruger Trigger. These triggers come slightly oversize in width at the pivot point and require fitting to the individual frame. This is not hard to do at all with a file. The Clark Custom Guns Steel Ruger Trigger also has a little extra material at the top most front portion of the trigger to futher reduce pre-travel takeup (I have had file a bit off of one of these to get it to reset properly). Lastly the Clark Custom Guns Steel Ruger Trigger has an externally adjustable Overtravel Set Screw. Once properly fitted the Clark Custom Guns Steel Ruger Trigger eliminates all of the side to side play common to the Factory Aluminum one size fits all Trigger.

I have also installed quite a few Volquartsen Accuracy Packages over the years including the new Trigger, Hammer & Sear and what I have outlined above is more cost effective and the end result is the same.

Thanks for the replies, I have been reading a lot on rimfirecentral.com. I think I am just going order the volquestrean kit, with a sam lam bushing. I dont want to have to file.

300winman, do I have to do a disassemble to remove it? If so, I think I am just going to wait until I get all the parts so I only tear it apart once.

I did kill a ground squirrel with it the other day @75yds, first shot. Was pretty impressed with that.

AM I better off to go with a holo style sight, or to go with more of an acog? And which brand would you guys recomend?

You will have to remove the mainspring housing and remove the barrel to acess the pin located on the bottom. I would recommend a bushnell trs-25 for your optic. some may argue that, but it has proven itself on two of my pistols for several years and is quite compact. I will be buying another one for my current 22/45 build. Also don'y waste your time with the sam lam bushing. You can get the mark2 bushing and trigger kit from volquatsen. This will save you the hastle of fitting two parts that aren't designed to work with each other. When that volquartsen kit arrives be sure to grind down the back of the post travel adjustment screw or it will stick out of the front of the trigger when properly adjusted. Quite bothersome if you don't shoot with gloves

A guy on RFC sells a bushing to eliminate the dreaded mag safety. I got mine in last week and it worked great. $11 delivered, it lets you retain your MKIII hammer. Most economical way to get rid of the lawyer parts.

I put a Tac Sol upper on my 22/45 a couple of years ago along with a Volquartsen trigger. Both pretty nice mods. Ended up doing the "slingshot" mod which allows you to drop the bolt without using the slide release. You just grab the back of the bolt, pull it towards you, and let it fly forward. There are video directions all over the internet if you are interested. They are nice guns. Have fun.

Are those 22/45 grips, or did you do the 1911 grip mod?
I recently purchased a 22/44 MKIII for a suppressor host, and it seems they're a PITA to work on....I don't mind doing the work, but I just don't have the time right now....lol....hopefully those are drop-in grips - cause I'd like a pair....lol.

I have one of the older 22/45's before decided to make them with removable grip panels but anyhow there were only two upgrades I felt that were <span style="font-weight: bold">needed</span> on it. One was to get get rid of the horrible trigger and two add hogue wrap around grips to mine. The only other thing I did to it was upgrade the extractor but that wasn't needed.

If you are reading up at RFC, you have seen the usual mods people do. For mine, I sent it off and had the frame milled flat and 1911 bushings and grips fitted. He also installed the Sam Lam bushing, worked the trigger, fitted a pre travel screw in the trigger shoe, and installed an oversized mag release. I also installed a Hi Viz front sight and the LCI filler also sold by a guy on the site. The extended mag bases are also sold by another guy on the site. It is very nice now all around. Now that I have had this gun for almost a month, I am just not that happy with it. Its accurate up close, but anything passed 10yds it just seems to fall apart. I havent done any upgrades yet, so I dont know if that will make a difference or not.

I put on a hi viz front sight and did not like it, I think either the front sight or rear sight is not square, because the front sight seems to lean to the left a little (the top of the front post is closer than the bottom of the front post when lined up with the rear sight.)

Will the volq drop in kit make much difference on the accuracy, or will it just allow you to actually drop the mag?

Mine didn't shoot all that well until i put about 1500 rounds down the pipe and left the barrel dirty. The red dot helped me a lot. I had a hell of a time with the factory sites

A good trigger is always a benefit. Trying different ammo may help, too. Most seem to be good shooters so I wouldn't be too concerned.

Ruger MK III replaced with all MK II volquartsen internals
with a 4.5 fluted pac-lite and ctc grips

shots amazing so lite... with the ctc laser grips i screw around and hip fire spent hulls.

also if you use the MK II hammer bushing you can ditch that god awful MK III mag safety

my front sight would get loose wiggle a little. i went to a red dot, removed the front sight and havnt had a problem...super accurate now. markIII hunter upper with adco dot on a mark 2 lower thats bone stock parts nothing done to it. some great looking pistols here fellas, think i need to have mine milled so i can put grips on it.

my SWR spectre in the pic above is hard to beat. its a little heavier and a couple more $ because its stainless but i can take it apart and clean, plus its rated for 17hmr, 22mag, 5.7x28, 22lr. the noise reduction is great, even for the supersonic stuff like the 17hmr. some of the cheaper suppresors sound pretty good too though.

My money is invested in the TBAC 22L-1. They're TI, light, as quiet as cans get, and I use it for my Mk II, 10/22, 17HMR, and FiveseveN. Performance worth its price, if you're paying the tax stamp you might as well spend the money and get the can you want so you aren't disappointed.

I went to the po box at 11pm last thurs night because I saw my mk2 from vq had come in. So I ran into town, got them, came back and tried to install everything. I went to bed at 430 am that morning with a pistol that would not work. So I spent 4 hours friday trying to get it to work, looked at all kinds of videos on line, pictures, everything. Nothing seemed to work. Took said in operable pistol to a "gunsmith" he couldnt figure it out. So its sat for 48 hours now, inoperable. Then I had one more to a cry for help thread I posted, and 762frmafr responded and said I need to capture the hammer strut in the mainspring cup. Well it worked.

I wasnt able to install the mk2 hammer being as I forgot to order the bushing. All I can say is WOW, does the new sear and trigger make all kinds of difference. It feels like a whole new gun. Deffinetly worth the money and frustration I went through to get it to work.

Road, I have the mk2 trigger sear in mine, need to order the bushing for the hammer. Mag safety still works.

ETA: Just pulled it apart again, and put the mk2 hammer in there, and left out the mag safety stuff, it works just fine and the mags fall free now. So Road, just order the mk2 trigger kit from vq and install sear, trigger and hammer, it will run great.

I dont know, I have the mk3 sear that came with mine. But with the vq trigger and hammer. I am definitely happy with the vq stuff. It took it from a mediocre feeling pistol to a precision smooth crisp trigger pull, that has zero uptake or overtravel.
