Anyone here running a 22 Creed for PRS/practice rifle? I'm specifically torn between new bolt rifle 22 Creed (make use of 308 bolt face) and 224 Valk bolt gun.

I wanted to get an idea of barrel life for the 22 Creed when running lower velocity (3000-3100fps) 88 to 90gr bullets. It's capable of pushing them much faster but for PRS speed limit and barrel life reasons, I'm considering a lower speed 22 creed.

My suspicion is that a 22 creed is not going to have good barrel life. Too much powder through too small of a diameter bore. Some super rough estimation with Quickload and a barrel life calculator spreadsheet predicts a barrel life of around 1400 rounds. Wild guess I know, but big picture the creed is going to have way less life than any of the smaller cases like 223/Valk, etc.

Might not be terrible for a match gun, but as a trainer you'd kill it fast.

I have quick load but which spreadsheet are you referring to about barrel life? Would love to have a copy of that for this project.

Ideally I'd like to find a catridge in the 31-35gr H2O capacity (224v or slightly larger) that has following attributes:
  1. Common bolt head pattern (308 or 223)
  2. Easy feeding from AICS mags.
  3. Barrel life of 2000-2500 rounds is sufficient
  4. Push 88/90 GR 224 caliber bullets between 2900-3100fps. Minimum would be 2900 but I think 3000 would be better goal for flexibility of speed nodes.
  5. Minimal brass prep (ie no neck turning, removing doughnuts, etc) fireforming is *okay* but only as absolute last resort.
Basically I want a slightly faster 224V to ensure I can hit the 2900-3000 range nodes so that it's competitive at shorter matches (800 and in) and allows a cheap practice rifle.

223AI is close but speeds are slightly lower than I'd want. 224V is great but tough to find a action that isn't a 6-10month wait (other than complete MPA 224V)

Any suggestions?

Ironic. I ran my old 224V barrel through the calculator. It predicted 2600 rounds... My barrel started tossing bad flyers at 2500 and went to 4 MOA at 2800. This little calc might just be on point!

I have my eye on the 6mm gt necked down to 22 caliber. It would be right in the ball park of what your trying to achieve. Or possibly a 22br. If you need a action for the Valkyrie Bighorn would be a good place to look. Bighorn has short lead times and interchangeable bolt heads.

Spife beat me to the spreadsheet, but that's the one I was using. It seems to track pretty well with different cartridges I've used.

Since you're looking at this as a trainer first and a match gun second, with emphasis on barrel life, I'd lean towards a 223AI. Yes you have to fireform the first time but it's easy because it's an ackley. Going to the 40 degree shoulder minimizes brass trimming. You could probably just hit the lower end of your speed requirement with a 26-27" barrel. Overall though it's going to be the cheapest option, and can be highly competitive at shorter range matches.

My buddy won a local club match with his 223AI a few months ago, just a trainer rifle with Dillon loaded ammo. 75 ELD-M at around 3050fps.

If you want to jump up to a 308 bolt face I'd say 22BR or 22BRA, but barrel life is going to fall off a bit with those.

Even at 2800fps an 88ELD-M doesn't go transonic (1.2) until 1000 yards or so. Adding 150 fps only gets you 0.1mil less wind drift at 800 yards, not a big difference.

I keep going back and forth. I built 2 6.5s last season, one more this season along with a Valkyrie gas gun. I run the 88s at 2730 right now and can get them close to 2800 reliably but they start to spin out around 2850-2900 due to twist rate.

AI has been on my list for a while but just need to pick soon and do it. Padom has a new reamer for long seating the 224vs that he will have in April and I'm genuinely considering that route if only to maximize barrel life and no fireforming needed.

Thanks for the reply here. I'm going to keep kicking this around.

I have a couple 22 Creeds and I abuse them. I run 82 grain Bergers around 3600. I run them until you can't touch the barrel without a burn in mere seconds. I replaced one barrel at 1000 rounds thinking it must be about done. I tossed that barrel on an old Remington action and used it to fireform 22-250 Lapua brass to 22 Creed and it shot lights out. It obviously wasn't close to burned out.

What brand of barrel?

It will be some time before I have any useful info, but I just got a .224V and a .220 Thunderbolt pre-fit from Keystone for my ARC Nucleus. I'm still waiting on the dies and I haven't bought the 6 Hagar brass to convert. I don't have another action and it's currently a 6.5 CM.

Has anyone tried this a few years on?
My local matches are limited to 3200fps, would be nice if running 80-90gr bullets ar the lower speed gave better barrel life.

Getting 22GT barrel life for match use but keep the ability to run stupid speeds for varminting would be sweet.
Appreciate an 88gr ELD at 3100ish is B
basically the same ballistics as 6creed, but on paper seems like not a stupid idea.

The hornady load data's starting load with 6.5 staball is below their max load for 22gt with an 88eld, so I I suppose the real question is would it shoot worth a darn at that velocity.

If so idk why it would get the >= 2k rounds the 22gt guys claim to get.
