.22 pigeon shots

Re: .22 pigeon shots

i always knew that airguns were accurate but never at 100yrd range. that is just amazing. I use to compete with single pump pneumatic .177 cal rifle as well as the precision pcp rifle but they did not push enough velocity to be accurate out to 100yards. Our targets were 10m (not far at all)

Re: .22 pigeon shots

I used to shoot PCP rifles until last winter. I bought a rimfire because I was getting tired of pumping, sorting pellets, and being limited on how many shots I could take. Some guys use a scuba tank to fill the gun. I was not going to spend that kind of money on an airgun.

Re: .22 pigeon shots

It's a matter of perspectives. Airguns allow you to hunt small game in areas where using of rimfires is out of question. It is safer, quieter, and usually works pretty well with farm owners. There isn't a small game animal I can think of that can't be persued with an airgun.

Number of shots per fill? Hmm...my Daystate AirWolf MCT produces over 100 full power and consistent shots on a single fill. I doubt I will be killing 100 pigeons in one day...

This is my Weihrauch HW100T. German precision at its best. Responsible for hundreds of dead pigeons, crows, squirrels, rabbits, p-dogs, and possums.

His "can birds see pellets" and "starling hunting" videos are good as well if you're into seeing pellets and feathers fly in slo-mo...

The air rifle realm isn't much different than the powerburner realm-- find what pellet & velocity range the rifle likes, practice, gather dope, practice again, and start making hits. High end air rifles are amazingly consistent when fed high quality pellets and will usually yield low single digit SD numbers. If you have an accurate range to the target, good dope, and read the wind correctly you can make some impressive hits at long distances (long distance for an air rifle, anyways-- but still impressive.)

Most of the critters I go after are between 70-110 yards; the farthest first shot kill I've made with my Edgun was a ground squirrel at 136 yards-- that's about 7.4 mils of drop from a 50Y zero. I also remove numerous starlings from the barn roof that's 118 yards from the shop. You're really lobbing the pellets in at those distances so an accurate range is critical and wind calls are always the tricky part.

I'm going to have to go out on critter patrol with the Edgun again tomorrow... it's just too damn fun!

Ted needs to release some new slo-mo hunting vids to irritate all the PETA-types into posting angry comments.
