The buckmarks in my experience are more accurate and have a better trigger than the ruger mark IIIs. However the plastic in the slide of the buckmark is not to my liking even though i have had no problems. If its just a practice gun the argument can be made if it breaks you order parts from brownells and no big deal. THe rugers are built to last. If you are looking to mimic characteristics of a centerfire pistol grip angle becomes a strong consideration. My vote was for other, and i concur with s524 a mark II (better trigger than mark III) or 22/45.

I had a MkII and a buckmark target and sold off the MkII when I was paring down my collection. No problems with the Ruger, just liked the feel of the Browning better.

I never liked the mag release on the bottom of the mag well but it looks like that's been fixed with the MkIII (it's been a long time since I've looked at .22s).

Another vote for a high standard. Military model 107. Lights out the best .22 pistol I've ever shot. Literally thousands of rounds down the barrel and could still wear out the X. Since 1967 I'll bet at least 100K down the barrel of it. Replaced extractors more than once but that's just maintenance.

I have a Buck Mark and it shoots great and it has much better feel than the Ruger.

Revolvers haven't gotten a lot of mention, but deserve consideration... Especially as an all purpose 22 pistol.

Nothing else will fire ALL types of 22 ammo "semi-automatically".

Snakeshot, birdshot, subsonics, gunpowder-less, shorts, longs etc etc.

There's a lot of cool 22 ammo out there, and its cool not having to single load them, or at least manually cycle the action.

I have a 4", 10-shot SW617 that I really like. I love shooting mice in the barn with birdshot.

We just purchased a 22/45 to shoot speed steel with, and love it, so far it has been really good with all the cheeper 22 shells, both in accuracy and reliability but will try some mini mags in it to see if they are a bit better on accuracy........

I was able to train with a 422 while I was shopping around for what eventually turned out to be my used Supermatic. For my use and then as a gift to my buddy who provided its use, I had purchased a number of magazines. Those magazine worked interchangeably in his 41.

If I were to purchase a 22lr target gun today, it would be a 41, with a 422 for a backup/trainer.
