Was looking for a scope for a 22 trainer. something mil/mil, tracks, and easier on the wallet. I would sacrifice glass for something that's known to tracks well. Current thoughts are an Athlon Talos BTR 4x14 or SWFA SS 10x. I feel like I've fallen into a habit when researching things like this. So, I thought id throw this out there to see if anybody knows of a diamond in the rough I may have over looked below the price point of these scopes (about $300). If such a thing exists in this hobby. Again, mil/mil is about the only thing truly important. Don't care much about ffp/sfp, illumintation, variable/fixed, etc. as far as features.

I have an Athlon Talos BTR right now on my Tacsol that I really like. I also like the SWFA 12X. I think time will tell on reliability on the Athlon, but mine has been good so far. To my eyes the Athlon is noticeably clearer than the SWFA, and it has a more rich feature set (illumination, reticle, side parallax). Other sweet scopes just out of your price range that I have enjoyed on rimfires are the SWFA 10X HD (Can find them for $450-500 used on here from time to time) and the 2.5-10X32 FFP Vortex Viper PST.

I put a Primary Arms 4-14x44 on my CZ452 a couple of years ago. It's FFP but it's a Mildot reticle. At $269 I think it's a pretty good option for a trainer and I've had good luck with mine.

If you want to be confident in the tracking of a scope at a $300 or so price point, one of SWFA fixed power scopes is your best bet. That does not mean that other scopes do not track, but the fixed power SS scopes have a very long track record of surviving abuse and tracking well. For a 22 trainer, depending on what you want to do, I'd be looking at either a 6x or a 10x model.

I use a Argos BTR 8-34x56 on a CZ 455 Precision Trainer at a local Long Range Silhouette Match. I've got my turrets dialed in for 50m, 100m, 150m, and 200m. Shot the match twice and the tracking is spot on.

In response to the two you provided origInally I have a talos and I think it's the perfect 22 scope. I put one on my comp 22 and though I wish it had a hair more magnification for my more br style gun it hasn't hindered my shooting at 100 yards. I won our match last weekend with it tying my previous high score.

Remember to keep parallax adjustment in mind when choosing the scope

A couple scopes mentioned have a minimum parallax in the 50 yard range, and if you intend to shoot closer at times this could be a bit of a draw back.

The SWFA (non HD) seems like the most solid choice for tracking and mil mil requirements. The slight difference you get in glass I wouldn't think is worth the durability difference. If you are going to shoot 22lr at different distances, you as going to dial those turrets ALOT.... To put a perspective on things.... If I throw a bunch of golf balls down the range I don't need to read the name on a golf ball to be able to hit the golf ball, but I do need to know that the adjustment I dial on the turrets is going to be what I expect it to be after I've dialed it up and down 10,000 times... Because rimfires tend to get shot ALOT more than the big guns most of the time

Thats a very good point. I think I saw a youtube video of a guy that beat the hell out of a SWFA SS to the point where he cracked it and the argon came out, and he said it still held zero and it tracked. That being said thats just what he claimed. There was no demonstration to back it up.

Is that the talos with the capped turrets or the BTR? I saw they make a Talos with capped turrets in mil that look like they could be dialed with your fingers. Price point was nice but i just didnt know if id regret it if im trying to dial a lot.

Ive been trying to decide on glass for my .22 trainer as well. I've researched the Athlon and some have had a few problems with them however overall most people have been pleased with them. Trouble is that by the time you get the features that are important then you're up there in price close to that of some really good scopes. I'd like to have at least 20 power but with focus down to sub 25 yards and zero stop and reliable tracking. I've mounted my Bushnell ERS for now but to focus under 75 yard I have to turn the power down. Id like to get behind a few scopes before I make up my mind on one.

The SWFA 10X is hard to beat in that price range. Their build quality and tracking is as good as anything under $1000, you just miss out on other features. When your budget puts you in a certain area you have to decide what's most important. I'll take a fixed power scope of known quality over a so-so variable any day.

It's the btr, the exposed turrets made to dial. I sight in at 50 but dial 1.8 mils high for 100. A zero stop would be nice just for peace of mind but I've never experienced them being bumped off accidentally much less a full revolution necessitating a stop. They are a little firm but I don't mind. And the parallax is nice as someone else mentioned. I like going out in the spring when the thistles are blooming, range one anywhere, dial and poof go the flowers from 10 yards to 100.

Midway has these for $189.99. I have one on a 40x .22 and used to have one on a CZ452. Barrett used to provide them with one of their bolt action .50s as 'standard issue'. Great scope for the money.

Man, that budget shoots down the best option: NF's new 7-35 with the focus down to 10m would be perfect! You can definitely rely on its tracking.. lol

I like the fixed SWFA for budget trainers, but Athlon is definitely working to try and take over that price range.

MOA/MOA options seem few and far between.

If you dont care about focal plane, might want to look at Vortex's Diamondback Tactical line

Ive had both primary arms 4-14 and swfa fixed and both are decent options. If you can live with a fixed power the swfa would be my pick. I currently have two pa 4-14 but only because I use my trainer as a squirrel hunting rifle also and 10x is just too much for that. the pa does track pretty good though. had it out to 335 yards so far
