Range Report 223 80VLD RANGE REPORT savage 10fp BENCH MADE

I switch the barrel and bolt on my savage with a 223 26" shilen select match 8 twist wylde chamber I set it up at O head space I run what I think is a stiff load so work up at your own risk.

ALL ranges are known and laserd with two swaro's and a LEUPOLD LRF.
I also used a NF NXS millrad known tracking is true and tested.

I broke in the shilen with 20 rounds and clean thats it and was happy at 100 yards with .4 MOA during the first 5 rounds after cleaning i set the zero .
I ran the numbers based off actual come ups at KD ranges. I then went back and verified these numbers/test .


223 Lapua virgin and 1-3x was all the same useing redding type S .249 bushing.002 neck tension
80VLD
26.2 RE15
205 FED
1.923 jumps 20 to the rifling
3000fps

Groups at 100 are in the .2 range on the good days,I tested zero at 100 before and after each session all was well .

565 yards come up was 3.0 mill I recorded the field conditions I then went to 1000 yards and the come ups where 8.2 mill I used the new burger(Brian L) G7 BC and all data matches at all ranges perfect with ballistic .

I then used the new burger(brian L) .444 BC and I could not get the data to match at 1000 yards it was .4 mill off or low I then plugged the ORIGINAL BC of .471 in and all data match perfect with xball..

I tested two lots of 80 VLD's with the same results these are some great shooting bullets and 223 is much cheaper its nice round with heavys rings steel well at 1k.

I have some 90VLDs inbound and I will see what they do if they stabalize in a 8 twist.






the green screen is a tungsten E2 with NightForce branded XBALL,the Iphone to the right runs ballistic downloaded from Itunes,the weather meter is a kerstal 4000NV,the case is a polaroid from wallmart and holds eather ballistic computer and or a kerstal and is very nice..



savage is a 10FP round action built by me on my table with two shilen select match barrels a 308 10 twist and now a 223 8 twist and a heavy recoil lug,I beded the mcmillan A2 recoil lug back and switch barrels without haveing to rebed it the action uses a pin to retain the rcoil lug in it's original location ,It has a rifle basic SAV2 trigger..
These are easy guns to build at home no GUNSMITH to wait on !

I'm really liking the Savages as well. Before bedding the .308 it shot .512@100. Today after bedding it shot .392. Big difference. No load workup, not tweaking oal. It was windy and raining today too! I have pondered getting a new bolt head and .223 barrel and taking the same route as yourself!

Sure you didn't mean .249 neck bushing? .449 seems a bit too large!

I built mine is less than an hour .

If you do get a 223 bolt get it trued,mine came from
sharp shooters supply already done.

Shot my Savage against my BIL's AI today. His with FGMM fared quite a bit worse than my Savage with handloads. His AI fared worse with my handloads too. Same shooter with both. I have done some recent business with SSS. Good folks.

26.2gr with naked 80's does seem like a stiff load, as I'm running 26.5gr in my 223AI with moly 75's. It looks like my rifle may be throated a bit shorter than yours, just by looking at the photo of the loaded round. Lots of fun for that small of a powder charge. A .450+ BC at 3,000 is no slouch.

mine has a wylde chaimber so is throated perfect for 80's and lets me seat them long and get away with more charge and the heavys. the brass is on the 3rd fireing no loose primers no heavy bolt lift or swiping ,what velocity are you throwing the 75's from the AI ?

I'm loading the moly 75gr A-Max at 2.44" or so (just in lands) and getting 3,050 from a 21" barrel. 3,100 was doable, but I wanted a load that I could run in summer with no worries. My throat is shorter as I was looking for something that would also work well with the 50gr V-Max. Be it a 223AI or a SAAMI 223, the 1/8" twist opens a lot of new doors.

COAL w/ the 80s is 2.550"

Smooth load of 25.6g N550 - 2,900 fps.

Given my past near blowup, I didn't try to go faster but they obviously will.

90s are too slow and will never beat the 80s at any reasonable range.

Frankie, I just had my 223 built. Gonna try N-140. I have 20 rounds with different loads right now but its been raining since last Thursday. We've had about 12 inches of rain. Its pretty bad in the Metro area. Maybe when it dries out a bit I'll get to the range.

I use mine as dual purpose match/hunt ITS TO LONG AT 26", I guess your benching yours ?
The velocity increase really doesn't do much if any for the wind the BC already has the ability and the speed isn't as big a factor,It does help come ups to be flatter for UKD,but most UKD is in the field and would need portability/maneuverability.I guess you where looking to throw 90vlds at 3000k ?
Hard rock has a 3000fps cut off in the rules so if your using it there keep that in mind working on your loads.

I did a clean job on the shilen and ran the first group CCB and the second just behind at 565 yards wind was 2-4 MPH I didnt correct so it would land off my POA the 3rd round was wind pick up and the lower group was full value wind but it was constant..




These are shot standing on my SUV bumper useing the roof for my bench..

Went to the range this AM wind was 2-3 MPH no correction I shot CB .16 MOA at 565 yards I Think I will put this up until next years hard rock..Ya right

I do not shoot F-Class, and I do not know those people you mentioned. I tell you, anybody who shoot cleans (subminute is clean in F-Class) almost every match will impress me.

I struggle to shoot cleans on a two minute 10 ring on my elbow with my service rifle.

My dope is the same 565 yards from 50 degress to 88 deg even at 1000 yards it within a couple .1Mrads..

you haveing problems with temp change ?

I used the same ammo from the groups before and went 1MOA AT 565 yards I was upset to say the least I slowed myself down and then ran three back to back groups and they where all three .60 MOA I then looked threw my notes and I was at 11 power when I shot the tight groups I was on 22 power with the larger groups.

565 yards I shot these back to back bottom group .44 MOA on 22 power top group on 11 power .22 MOA the 1 MOA group I didnt take a pick of from being upset from the group and the day I had..

test run before sat match..




Will see how well this or I hold up sat at the match..

I believe my problem was bad chronograph readings. But I switched to Varget for a little more hoped-for stability.
