1+. I think it is a great practice gun. I know that a 22 LR is a cheaper way to practice even. I have one too. But once you go beyond 300 - 400 yards, then it a guessing game. I like to use my 223 to learn more about the wind at say 500 - 600 yards.

Re: 223 bolt guns

My 2 cents:
I have owned 2. Have a new on now( rem R5). I have plenty of other calibers in tactical set-ups such as 7mm Mag, 7-08, .243 ect.

My deal is that I shoot and so does my woman. We hunt deer/pigs/ elk/ exotics as well as varmints. Given that, a selection of weapons is par.

But, my favorite is a .223 bolt gun. They are great for accuracy; reloading and you can shoot it all day with no fatigue. I would guess I have head shot more than 20 deer and a handful of pigs.

For hunting and tactical applications,,,,, this rig will limit your shot placement opportunities.... Inside of 100yds it’s no biggie... But 300-500 you gotta have all the right things in line. But I like that, it is challenge. And if things don't line up, I don’t burn powder

I would not say a .223 is an all around gun.... unless you never shoot past 100yds, you should not use it on some med-size game.

It does not buck the wind for crap out past 300yrds... 15mph full value or worse.

However... if you have a few larger calibers and you simple want to hone skills and like the challenge of doing more with less.... Get one and love it! I do.

Re: 223 bolt guns

Buds, I'm thinking on building a .223 ACIS. Looking for a "local" coyote gun. We can't shoot anything larger than a .275 in the various counties.I was going with a Stiller action for other reasons as well.Let me know what you think?

Re: 223 bolt guns

If you get the right .223 bolt gun it will give you the feel of your main caliber tactical rifle but with virtually no recoil and cost a lot less to shoot. Besides, an accurate .223 bolt gun is great for varmints, as others have already said.

I don't think that I'll ever be without my Win Model 70 Heavy Barrel Varmint in .223!

Re: 223 bolt guns

i shoot the snot out of my .223s. for those looking to build one, don't go too heavy. a 7-8 pound .223 AI in 1-7 or 1-8 twist is perfect. i have two that are a lot heavier than that and kind of regret the extra pounds.

Re: 223 bolt guns

Bought it as part of a collection. Good for ground hogs, easy to shoot, one of my more accurate guns. Ammo is a little less expensive than .308 or 7mm also.

Re: 223 bolt guns

I had Randy build me a Rem 700 223. Took it out the other day. I found out it like the BH 75 grainers out to 650 yards. Specs are as follows:
MCM A5 spacer system lop, adj. cheek piece, color by Randy
Rock 20" fluted 1/9 twist
Seekins 20 moa base and rings
Shilen trigger
Badger floorplate
leupold 4.5x14x40mm

All metal coated in tan including scope. Shoots good. Will not hesitate having Randy do another build for me.

According to TexGal338 it looks like a BB gun in my hands.lol
You gotta ask her about that.

Re: 223 bolt guns

I have a 26" Ruger and a 20" heavy barrel Savage. Mostly they've been used for varmint hunting, although I bought the Savage in part to be a lower recoiling "trainer" as well.

I have not had the same experiences. I have shot several deer in the head from 75-150 yds, all dropped on the spot. That was with a 55 gr projectile.

As most have said, the cost to target shoot is great and varmints hate those AMAX/VMAX bullets. You shoot it all day no fatigue.

Re: 223 bolt guns

Taking all things into account I wish I'd have had a .223 Ackley put together long before I finally did. Stupid accurate and 1000yd capable for half the cost per round as my .308. I haven't had a chance to get mine out long yet but from everything I've read on the topic I won''t be disappointed.

Re: 223 bolt guns

mtm,

Pros: 'Cause it's fun at 1k. It teaches what really counts if you reload. The women and kids can shoot it without problems. Doesn't cost a bunch to reload. Wow factor with competitors. It will keep 0.5 MOA or better. Slightly more accurate than AR-15.

Cons: Flaky winds. Single feeding 80gr. bullets.

+1

75 amax in a 223ai will do amazing things, so i've read. I'll let you know in about a week...the longest week ever.

Re: 223 bolt guns

I really want to do a 223AI build. Shoot 75gr AMAX as my practice rifle. 22" Light Palma barrel, Super light manners Carbon GAT, Seekens BDM, 1.8-10x USO.

Re: 223 bolt guns

Not to hijack, but this 223ai has been a long time coming for me. I have a rock 8 twist in 22 inches, an hs precision stock, williams bottom metal, Jard trigger, and either the ior SH edition or a old style (hashes between the mil-dots) Nikon tac 2.5-10.

The original Shilen barrel was chambered incorrectly and my fireforming loads and factory ammo, blew up the brass...long story that is looking for a happy ending.

Re: 223 bolt guns

I have three-because I have two sons and we like to kill prairie dogs. A Remington PSS and 2 700 VS.

If you want to refine your skills get a heavy barrel Remington, throw in a jewel trigger and some good glass. Practice becomes fun very quickly. Your mileage may vary...

Did I mention introducing new shooters too.

Boom..........................Ding! You fucking nailed it, and then some.

Re: 223 bolt guns

I just got my new Remington 5R in .223 sighted in this weekend. Considering the variable, rather gusty winds and cheap ammo it shot very well. After 40 rounds and no "break-in" it was well within .5 MOA, and even broke .3 MOA for one group. I'm loading up some Hornady for the coming weekend and we'll see how she shoots out to 300 yds. Coming from a good number of .308 bolt guns, I purchased the .223 for lighter recoil that makes training easier and less expensive. This thing may be my favorite rifle, other than my G.I. Garand, of course.

Re: 223 bolt guns

I have a practice LTR in .223 to switch my .260 out of my AICS. Cheaper to shoot and accurate too. Took my AR to the Winter Reade match and have to say it was a blast. No recoil, super fast follow up and I kept dialing in too much wind. Those 68 HTHP's did pretty well even in a little wind.

Now that AI has magazines coming I might build a .223 with a long throat to seat the 75 A-max's and run it in a couple matches.

Re: 223 bolt guns

OK,

I'll play. I originally built my wife an AR to shoot, and she summarily rejected it. Too much noise and activity for her.

Then I built her this.

DSC_0009.jpg

She loves it.

Weighs fifteen plus with an S&B on it, and she shoots lights out with it. Shoots the 75 AMAX's all day long into about 3/4's at 200 with her driving it, and she will shoot 100 rounds a day at the range for what, twenty bucks worth of components.

Then I decided I needed one.

DSC_1070.jpg

I tried to get them as close to the same as possible, but we all know that's a pipe dream. Mine won't shoot her load as well, but still a half minute gun with the 75's over 25 grains of Varget. Pretty much any brass, any primer, works just fine.

Both are 7 twist fluted Rock barrels, 700 actions, and McM stocks. And with ammo costs today, I'd say get one, two or however many you can shoot at one time........

Re: 223 bolt guns

I have a 700 PSS in .223,It was my dads varmint gun and my target gun, a good partner for my Ar-15 match rifle(both using 75gn Bullets) Cheap to shoot, accurate and all the power I need (breaks the paper every time)
