My friend is Loading 52 gr flatbase hollowpoints and the bullets can be pushed into the case with very little pressure pressing against the benchtop.

The specs:
Once fired mil 5.56 brass.
Case mouth ID is .215 after trimming with a Dillon case trimmer.
Bullets measure .224.
Standard Lyman .223 dies.

Loaded rounds were lightly pushed against the benchtop and (using dummy rounds) bullets can be pushed all the way into the case with light finger pressure.

We've not had this problem before, using these dies.
Any thoughts?

Re: 223 neck tension

Neck tension= outer diameter of neck of the loaded round - actual bullet diameter (.224")

According to handloading for competition. You would like your neck tension to be from .002" to .001". Did you polish your sizing ball

Re: 223 neck tension

We made up 6 dummy rounds from scratch. We also sized some trimmed cases using the Lyman sizer die and the Lyman expander ball left the case neck ID at .213. And we were still able to push the bullets in. They slide in smoothly, almost like they were lubed.

Maybe we should try a different brand of .223 dies?

Re: 223 neck tension

you should really use .003-.005 tension to aviod delayed ignitions.

if you want a quick fix remove the expander from the die and size without it. What is the ID of a sized case that was not expanded ?

are you sure your sizing the case completely ( the shellholder is making contact with the base of the die ,) im just it is , just thought i'd ask

im sure its not the problem but what is your case neck thickness ?
