223 Re-loading

Re: 223 Re-loading

Largest Vmax .224 is 60 gr, varmint grenade is 36 or 50 gr. All work in 1:9 twist. I think Sierra/Speer make a varmint bullet with an orange or green tip but dunno the weights. I'm a Hornady/Berger person tho...

I use 55 gr Vmax in my AR to match the ACOG bdc but the 60 gr would stabilize better.

Re: 223 Re-loading

Not a VMAX, but I use the 65 gr gameking. Very effective on jackrabbits.

Hopefully I will have the opportunity to try it on larger game this winter. If you are wanting to hunt deer, I would suggest something with a little more penetration like the gamekings.

Re: 223 Re-loading

I would shoot the 53gr V-Max for varmints and targets since it's got a better BC than the 60gr and it's easier to load since it's a BT bullet, with the extra velocity it should out perform both the 55 & 60gr V-Max pretty easy with a healthy dose of Benchmark powder.

Re: 223 Re-loading

WOW. Barnes loves those TSX bullets. As far as the Hornady 75 GR HPBT, will the match HPBT work as well and whats with the Moly or non Moly? New to reloading so I have no idea of the difference. I have managed to load about 200 rds of 55 GR VMAX with Varget though. And help would be great. Just looking for something to maybe kill a deer or two with.

Re: 223 Re-loading

60 gr. v-max with 25.3 grains of H335 or 60 gr. Nosler partitions with 25 grains H335 out of my 16" barreled S&W. For deer @ 150 yds or less with head or neck shot it's lights out.

I haven't tried beyond 150 yards. I let my brother cut loose with his 300 win. mag. then.

Keep your distance reasonable and with proper shot placement you'll put deer to the ground. Head or upper neck doesn't mess up your meat either.
