I am wanting to buy a savage in a 223/5.56mm. I want to buy a savage because they have some of the best out of the box accuracy and there price arent bad. But i don't really know what model to buy it in. Before i was thinking the stevens 200 and custom that.
But then I got thinking of buying a better one like a model 11 or model 11/111 or somthing and semi-customing that. But i have also been thinking about buying a Howa Hogue in a 223/5.56mm.
If i buy the Howa i probabaly won't be doing anything to it. I have heard they are great rifles but i am in kind of a pickle and need help deciding on which to buy.

Unless Howa has changed something in the past couple months last time i checked all their 223's are running 1-12 twist barrels. Depending on what savage model you go with you can get 1-9, or 1-7. I don't think they have any factory rifles in 1-12 anymore. You need to decide what type of shooting your going to do as that will dictate what twist is best for you.

For savage i am thinking either the stevens 200 or model 11 or model 12 or even model 11/111. But If you have any suggestions for a savage that is under 600 dollars before tax, tell me.

I'm shooting a Remington 700 sps tactical .223. Very good price and good accuracy out of the box, though a little on the heavy side (about 13 lbs with optics and a bi-pod). you can shoot good groups at less than 300 yds with 55 grain fmj. ammo. They have a 1 in 9" twist on the stock 20" bull barrel and has an adjustable trigger from the factory. I am really enjoying mine.

If you are going to customize get the stevens and go from there. If you want an out of the box rifle get a savage model that you want and shoot it till the barrel is gone. I personally cannot leave things alone so I would get the stevens and build off it.

Re: 223 SAVAGE or 223 HOWA HOGUE

please, someone correct me if I am wrong, but it is not good to be shooting 5.56 out of those .223's, right? Most bolt guns are chambered in .223 only. I know this only because I just purchased one, which, to answer the OP's initial inquiry, was Savage 10fcp-k (mainly cuz' I'm a Savage freak, but also because of accutrigger and 1:9 twist). Matches my .308 rather well!

Savage 10FP all the way. Prices vary from 550 to 600. The stock isn't the best but the rifle is more than capable of MOA out of the box. I have the 10FP in 308 and before I started adding onto it the damn gun shot great! Heavy bbl, 1-9 twist, good action and accutrigger. Buy it, shoot it as much as possible and upgrade when necessary! Best part is now they are called the 10FP SR and come with threaded bbl and thread protector! Good luck

I'd look at the savage 200 or savage if you want to customize it. many aftermarket parts for them. also you may want to think about if youre gonna replace the barrel right away or wait awhile. I think the 11 and 200 have regular barrels (not bull) but if you want a bull barrel you may want to look at the savage 12 which has a longer, heavier barrel. I got the 12 because it had the bull barrel and was lefthanded. I could have gone with the 11 too but i wanted more of a target rifle with a heavy barrel.

Ya, im not going to replace the barrel right away. But im fine with a 22" barrel or 24" barrel because i want my 223 as a short, light carry around gun. But i am buying a 243 in a sps dm an i am going to have that as my long range sniper.
