I just ordered a new 223 with a 26 inch barrel. I also ordered a new suppressor for the rifle. It is a Savage Varmint rifle and will be used for ground hog hunting. I also ordered some of the Calhoon double hollow point bullets for expansoin for sub-sonic bullets.

I will also be developing a standard velocity load. The twist is a 1in9. I am going to be cutting the barrel down to either 20" or even 18". What powders are most effective in shorter barrel 223's?? Tom.

Tom, Look at W748 IMR 4198 H335 AA2230
I have had good luck with these powders. Currently am shooting W748 with good results. I am shooting a LTR with a 20" barrel. Good Luck.

Have had good luck with Benchmark in my LTR and Howa .223's and like W748 it flows thru a powder measure really well. Mine seem to like a pretty full case of it (27.5-28gr) using 40gr pills.

Another thought is to pick up a couple of reloading manuals and look at the Pistol Section for the 223 loadings and make sure that the velocity is out of a 14 or 15" barrel. That will tell you real fast what powders really do look good. IHMSA guys face this little problem all the time

Good Shooting,
