If your going to build a 22cal go with a 22-250AI or a 220AI, no question about it at all and we have reamers for both. Shooting PDogs is all about AIR time, it make me laugh every time someone recommend a fast twist barrel and heavy bullets to shoot PDogs,,,WTF

I've shot thousands of PDs, if the shooting is hot and heavy, 223 or better yet 223AI then you can shoot both. The TAC 20 is also great. Easier on barrels easier on the wallet. On a good day I've shot 600+ rounds. If the shooting is not one dog after the other and your shots are longer in windy conditions build yourself a 6-250, 22-250 necked up to 6mm. If it could only be one 223 would be it.

Agree with 22-250! My 22-250 700 vs sf shot easy under 1/2" right out of the box. Rolled some loads and put it in a Mcmillan A5 and its 1/4" gun now. Love it!! I have taken many white tail deer with it also, even though some say it's too small of a round. I strongly disagree after personally seeing numerous deer drop in their tracks with mine.

I would go 22-250 in a bolt gun. If you want .223 go with an AR type build. The 22-250 has more visual effect on targets and files flatter.

That being said I only shoot the 22-250 when hunting p-dogs. My AR gets much more use and still gets a few p-dogs when I go hunting.

The splatter of a 22-250 is hard to beat, for just shooting pdogs 22-250 all the way.

same here, i run a couple of each 223 and 22-250's, the 250 dont recoil enough to miss the explosion @ the other end, unless your zoomed into 20X... think about runnin a can on ur new rifle makes shootin alot more fun!!!

I just got a Remmy 700VSS in .22-250. I put a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50. I will eventually reload but for now its gonna be factory feed. I could not find a twist rate on the barrel. Anyone know what it might be. I wanna shoot the Hornady Superformance 50 V-max.

My friend has a .22-250 and man that thing is a lot of fun! If you like red mist and sending them 'lil fellers 15' feet in the air then the .22-250 is the one you are looking for.

I have always been infatuated with the .220 swift though, the velocities on that thing are impressive. I can only Imagine what a 30gr varmint grenade doing 4000+ fps would do to a gopher...

i believe most of the Rem 700 250s are a 1-14.

Truth, you both for any trip, since you don't have big towns nearby.

After you heat up the barrel, you some thing to shoot while the .22/250 cools off.

In any busy action, and use your .22s and .17s while your all the centerfires to cool off.

My friend's last trip he had to sell an XD to his father (a dealer, mind) to pay for ammo (.204, .223,.243, a couple of rimfires).

Your .22/.250, you're get 500-600 more fps for longer range.
A varmint rifle isn't much a big deal for recoil.
Plugs AND muffs.

Nothing wrong with adding a brake to a 22-250 to almost completely eliminate any recoil. I know it isn't necessary, but doesn't hurt anything. You'd already be wearing hearing protection anyway.

For you Remington 700 22-250 shooters. Whats the heaviest bullet your 1/14 twist barrel can handle? I'm thinking the heavier higher BC bullets (60gn) will buck wind better at long range

No, I wasn't joking and obviously you have never owned nor have any experience with the 223 wssm round. You're probably repeating gossip and I thought only women did that.
I have 1300 rounds down my 27" Kreiger barrel shooting 55 V-Max's at 3935 fps. Factory barrels are chrome lined to aid in barrel life.
For prairie dogs, I alternate between my 223 wssm and my Savage 12BVSS in 22-250. Great aerial displays with either gun.

Either caliber will technically be just fine, but what is the FUN in just fine?? There are so many factors that you could bounce around to try to justify this caliber or that caliber but in all honesty you should do what makes the most sense for you & makes you the happiest.

I go on 2 big prairie dog shoots each summer to help with the winter coyote hunting withdrawls that I suffer from & I bring twin 22-250's with me that are physically identical down to the finest detail less the color of the HS Stock on each. They were both built at the same time on the same equipment & wear the same barrel/stock/action/scope/etc, etc, etc. I even shoot the same loads in each so both pipes wear evenly. I rotate between rifles to keep the barrels as cool as possible & not having to stop to let the barrel cool over & over is that many more rounds I send down range over the weekend.. I also have a good cleaning regimen out in the field. I always have 2 barrels on order so that after the prairie dog summer I am ready for coyotes come winter time.

Over the course of say 2,000 rounds each the .223 will use less powder, less brass life, less barrel life, less fun as it pertains to the red mist factor! As far as the recoil vs. spotting kills concern... I feel it doesn't really exist between the 2 considering the rifles are close to the same weight & the same optics.

If you truely dont care about the cost difference between these 2 calibers & barrel life & love to see prairie dogs turn into red organic mist then I say go 22-250 hands down. I use a 14 twist with 50-55gr Berger Varmint/Nosler Ballistic Tip or Hornady VMax's @ 3800+ FPS & they destroy very well.

The 220 Swift with good explosive pills pushing insane velocities well past 4,100 FPS is hilarious to see!!!

I'm shooting Sierra 63 grain SMP thorugh a SPS Varmint.
They shoot great where 40, 50, and 55 grainers just shot okay.

I've varminted with both many times and although I love the 22-250, if you had to choose one I probably would lean twards the .223. It is plenty accurate and way less expensive to take and run a lot of ammo through and with the right twist with heavy bullets it will reach out there too.

I used a 223 like everyone said no vaper trail. Then I went to 22-250 no looking back. 22-250 got it in a rifle and pistol liked it so much. Now i got 6x284 really blows them up.

Lots of hunting experience with a 22-250... fantastic round, great killing power.... It's right in the middle between a 223 and a 220 swift.
You have more umph than a 223 and a much longer barrel life than a Swift....Kinda the best combination without really any drawbacks IMHO.
Coyotes don't like this round. I've asked them what they thought of it but they just remained silent and had a hollow dead stare.

Just to update...I broke down and bought a 22-250 from a guy here on the Hide. I look forward to getting it and shooting some dogs this summer.

not what was asked but since i can walk out my back yard and start shooting pdogs i thought i'd put my 2 cents in. 204. Thats the way to go with a pdog gun. and Dont feel worried about yotes with it either it will put them down at any range u need to be shooting at them. I have a rem 204, 223, couple of ar's, rem 22-250 and so on. One thing i like about the 204 is being able to watch your hits and that thing is fast, u can actually tell the diffrence between it and the 223 in the field. Anyway it shoots flat and is easy on everything. Loading for the guns is where u can see the diffrence. The 22-250 uses so much more powder than everything else, i about just shoot the 243 instead because u use bout the same powder and have a wider choices of bullets which will alow you to reach out there for them longer shots. 204 is flatter and faster than the 223 but uses less powder, less recoil,less report, and less barrel ware then the 22-250. Fast and flat......
