excuse my ignorance and lack of knowledge on this, i tried the search (including the google snipers hide) and there was only a few threads that commented on this , and im still none the wiser. im interested in getting a 223 but i want to be able to fire 5.56 as well. im planning on getting a remington, my question is how difficult or how much hardship is it to get it converted so it can fire both rounds ? what exactly is involved, will i have to rebarrel or can the original barrel be worked on? thanks in advance for your help, i dont know anyone who owns or has knowledge about this chambering

Re: 223 wylde

Check out this article.

http://home.comcast.net/~mattmcginnis/reloading/223_versus_556.htm

"The throat in a 223 Remington chamber is typically .085" while the throat in the 5.56mm chamber is typically .162". The added space in the 5.56mm chamber compensates for the added pressure inherent in the 5.56mm NATO round. "

The wylde chamber is different in having a shorter throat than the 5.56 but longer than the standard 223. It's the middle ground between 556 and 223. Supposedly it shoots 223 better than a 556 chambered rifle will.

Getting a barrel chambered in 223 wylde shouldn't be tough. Off the top of my head Rock River Arms and White Oak Armory sells barrels in 223 wylde.

Of course if you get a 5.56 you will be able to shoot 223 perfectly fine.

Re: 223 wylde

thanks for the link. is there any factory bolt action rifles which are 223 wylde ?, what i mean is at the end of that link it says that some manufaturers now chamber there 223 for 223 wylde as a happy medium , i read somewhere that savage might do this ,any truth to that ? or any other rifle makers doing it for that matter ?

Re: 223 wylde

To answer your question directly, guys ream out their AR chambers all the time, especially 5.56 marked which are not in actuality.

To further challenge your decision, look into Noveske's custom chambering. Quote from John N.:

"It is similar to a wylde in concept, but better suited for a combat application in that it makes extraction a little easier. We have seen the Wylde stick a MK262 Mod 0 case after several mags dumped in a auto torture test. The 5.56 NMm0 chamber body is a NATO body in that it falls between the min and max NATO tolerances. The throat is tighter and shorter than a 5.56 NATO for better accuracy."

Re: 223 wylde

The 223 Wylde is suitable for both Nato and 223 ammo. The chamber has 5.56 NATO dimensions with a shorter throat providing improved accuracy. Wylde is the de facto standard for match ARs: Rock River, WOA, Larue and many others use Wylde as the default chambering. go for it.
