As title states, thinking about switching the 223 AR15 to one of the above.

Would shoot the factory Hornady ELD-X or ELD- VT ammo.

Which one would be the most accurate? Which one would be more effective on coyotes under 500 yards.

Realistically all shots will be within 200 yards.

I’m torn between the two. Thanks in advance.

Typical cheesy commentary, but shows 6arc performance from close to long range on yotes.

Having shot a lot of yotes with 223/5.56, 22-250, 243 Winchester, and 6.5 Grendel, I can assure you that the heavier 6 & 6.5mm bullets are gonna get you a lot more bang/flop results than the 22cals.

I’d go 6ARC over 22

I’m the opposite. 22 arc all the way. With factory ammo 62 grain your extremely flat and with hand loads even better. That’s the ticket for coyotes especially at night with thermals is bullets going fast and flat. Any of those 22 cal bullets in the arc going that fast are going to hammer a coyote but the fast and flat will make up for missed ranging. At night this is key in my opinion. Doesn’t hurt you in the daylight either. Why do you think the 22-250 is the all time coyote killer or the 204. It’s this reason.

They certainly all kill yotes. Most of the yotes I shot with 22-250 & 243 were dusk and dawn kills before I got a thermal. Hot 87grain vmax in 243 always hit harder than 55’s and 60’s in the 22-250.

I’m a poor and only have a 384 resolution thermal so almost all of my night kills are under 200 yards. At that distance pretty much any center fire cartridge is point and shoot flat for coyote body shots.

I prefer 6 Arc but both work just fine for your purpose.

For yote my only references are 17 Rem, 222R, 223R, 22-250, 243 using 75's, and 6mmAR Turbo using 105 Vmax. Both 6mm's hit the hardest at distance. I got a double at 330Y, as there was a pack eating off a dead cow, and they went down hard with the 105's in the Turbo. I was able to RF the distance beforehand so that helped.

I’d lean 22 arc. Fast and flat. I have a 6 arc and it hits them with authority but need to really rely on my holds to much for quick shooting past 250. I built a 204 Ruger this year with a 20” proof CF barrel shoots Hornady 40 gr vmax at 3722 fps avg and absolutely flattens them. 2” high zero at 100 makes it a point and shoot rifle to 350.
