.22lr Sniper's Rifle

I don't think this question has been asked quite like this- I searched. But if it has sorry- I'm new.

Anyway I think I want to get into long range shooting. And I think a good intro for me would be to buy a .22lr rifle with a mildot/moa-dot scope and start trying things out- mostly because it's hard to find a place to shoot further than 200yds and I can experiment with a .22 for a lot less than a .308 or .338.

So what's a good accurate .22lr rifle that I can mount a scope on? I would prefer it to be synthetic with a heavy barrel.

So far I've found Cz's, browning t-bolts, sako quads (I'm really interested in these but haven't heard much about them), savage mkII and any other full size ones.

I would like to keep it under or around $1000 for the rifle, rings and scope.

You can spend less on the rifle and buy more of a scope, or you can buy more rifle and buy less scope. Both sides have their benefits but I prefer a *good enough* rifle and highest quality optics as I could afford. I love CZ's and believe that they are a much better rifle than Savage or otherwise would make. So, In my opinion, a CZ452 Varmint would be absolutly ideal. That puts you out lets just say 460 dollars because I don't know the exact numbers and don't wish to figure it out.

Anyways, that leaves you with optics and optical mounting. Rings will run you around 50 bucks for Burris Xtreme Tactical units which are so tough and stable that unless you're willing to waste $100+ on NightForce or Leupold rings are your best option for the price. For the CZ 452 you have to get a scope base to use anything picatinney so I'd go with D.I.P.'s 25 MOA scope base I believe it is. That will run you another 40-50 bucks if memory serves me correctly.

Before I go on to optics I want to advise a few other products really quickly: Although extra magazines aren't anywhere near a necessity, I would highly advise picking up a couple spares if you can swing it. CZ's run about 30 each but are well worth the expense in my opinion simply for ease of use at the range. Also you must consider the cost of match grade ammo and shooting supports/accessories if you haven't already. A sturdy bi-pod (harris or versa-pod work very well) is always a fantastic investment. A shooting mat will also serve you very well if you plan to spend any time on your belly shooting from the prone, which is highly suggested.

Now, with whatever you have left over you should spend on getting a good quality optic. I reeeeeeally like Vortex scopes and don't believe there is a better value out there. I'd look into the crossfire series, specifically the 6-24x50 30mm models with mil-dot reticles. That should run you a bit over 220 dollars give or take and depending on if you buy the sunshade and all that other cool crap that you probably won't use after the cool factor runs out.

I personally bought a Savage MkII TR with an SWFA Super Sniper 10x fixed power scope and have done pretty well for myself with this setup. I wish I would have saved money by buying the Vortex scope instead, but the mistake has been made already. What I didn't like about the Savage line is the smoothness of the bolt and the trigger. After a couple thousand rounds down the tube I have fallen in love with the accu-trigger and the bolt has loosened up considerably, but will never compare to the smoothness that CZ rifles will have even out of the box never fired. Accuracy is great, and to some degree isn't being used because of me the shooter holding it back, but I do wish there was more to tap into when the day comes that I can reliably drive it to its limitations.

I do believe that good quality ammo makes good quality practice, although I do not believe that rimfire shooting should cost more than hanloaded centerfire to shoot. So I'll keep my suggestions down to Wolf Match Target and Eley Team or Match boxes because they have all proven miles ahead of other boxes that I have personally used through my rifles. For you, I would suggest doing a TON more research and making the best decisions for your specific purposes and budget. Also, you can't just buy a "sniper rifle" and some folks here (a great many actually) will get upset and buthurt if you ask how to build one or buy one, so please spare yourself the trouble. Most of us in the rimfire section just don't mind, but in other forums in this board, that isn't the case...

^^^^^^There you go Dylan has done his homework and it is your benefit.
If I could add anything I would say the only way you can best the CZ452V would be to buy an Anschutz. I am in a unique position to see many brands of 22 rifles put through the ringer every month and the CZ models shake out toward the top evey time. There are exceptions due to the person behind the trigger.
I spend about $12 per 50 rounds, that is still much cheaper than even reloads in a 308. The premium ammo is worth the price to me because I am shooting for cash. Wolf is hard to beat for serious practice.
The Bushnell 3200 Elte 10x is a solid scope and will serve you well. It is plenty good for 200yd shooting, there are even some guys who have won our match with this scope, it is a great scope and the only $200 scope I will reccomend.

I have a Anschutz 1416DHB .22LR and its a awesome rifle. Very accurate. I have owned CZ's, and shot Savages and IMO, the Annie its the best. Great fit and finish to the rifle. Really worth the extra money over the CZ and Savage I think. For scopes, I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x40 Tactical on my rifle and its awesome aswell, I used to run one on my 308 so I know she's a tough optic. I would certainly get a 20-30MOA base for it if you can or grab the Burris Signature Zee rings for it. Im doing that as the 20MOA Rails raise the scope up to high for my liking.

Again, the annie and bushnell scopes are both awesome value for money.

There is superb advice offered here. I can't offer anything more. Take it, and you will be starting out better than most. Learn from other's experiences and you will benefit, not just in marksmanship but in most walks of life. It's a hard thing to do sometimes though. Ask me how I know.......

I am going to agree with the previous posts. CZ452 or any 64 action Anschutz should be in your price range. They are considerably better made than most of the other rimfires. The Bushnell 3200 10x or even a 5-15 would be reliable and have the target turrets as well as a mildot reticle if that's what you want to try. Start reading the rimfire section here and over at rimfirecentral. Buy a nice 22 and pass it down to your kids. An accurate one will be fun to shoot and useful virtually forever.

Can't beat Savage rimmies I agree. CZ is another great option but between the two, your personal preference should be your guidance. Anschutz is a whole another league but if your main application is plinking/hunting then take a hard look at Savage and CZ...Invest in glass and good base/rings.

CZ 452 Varmit and Vortex optics are a GREAT combination!

A Savage isn't a bad choice either. There is a TON of great information in this forum and Terror pretty much hit it out of the park. I really can't add much more other than <span style="text-decoration: underline">buy the best optic you can afford</span>. It may be good enough to transfer over to your centerfire rifle when you reach that stage and save you some $$$.

Different strokes for different folks. I just prefer my rimfires to feel like a centerfire.

I have a cz varmint, 3 savages and 2 marlins. I think im the only CZ owner in the world that isnt head over heels in love with their rifle. Dont get me wrong its nice but i dont feel its any better than my savages they both shoot about the same and i think the fit and finish is pretty similiar quality wise. Every one seems to rave about the CZ's "quality" i just cant tell that much difference between it and my savages.

I think a Savage BV for around 300-350 will shoot as well as your needs will be. that will leave you some left for a decent scope. I like a wever classic v24 or elite 4200 or sightron sII for a rimfire. That would be a decent rig for under 1k easy. You could probably pull it off for 7-800 no problem and still have enough left over for ammo.

I decided that I wanted to shoot .22RF as a sub-caliber training alternative. My primary concern was that the exercise be worthwhile. The .22RF rifle had to be a near duplicate of my “full caliber” rifle. It was critical that the performance of the whole system emulate that of my “full caliber” to scale.

Since my “full caliber” rifle was built on a Remington M700 action I built the .22RF trainer on a Remington 40X action.

Shooting paper targets has limited training utility so I made a set of ¼ scale E-type and F-type steel silhouettes.

I place a field of these targets at random out to 250-yards.

This allows me to stadia-metrically range these targets and apply firing solutions very similar to a “full caliber” exercise.

Although not perfect this system has been a real benefit to me.

Do you have a thread about the specifics on these two rifles, this is almost exactly what I'm looking to do with my r700 since I'll only be able to shoot beyond 100 yards probably 7-10 times a year.

If you are running a R700 then the closest you will come in duplication is to use a Rem 40XB - mainly because it IS a M700. Don't confuse that with the 40X which is built on a M722.

With the 40XB you can literally duplicate everything on your CF. It drops into a 700 stock, uses 700 triggers, etc... Word of warning, there may come a point where your rimfire becomes the favorite!

I'd really like to know more about your target system. Those look like something I could make and use out at the farm. How thick is the steel?

I've been doing a bit of rimfire practice with a Ruger 77/22. (Granted the one i've been using has a custom tube on it.) I'd put it up there as a good choice because it uses standard 10/22 magazines. The fact that it comes with a reliable mag source and you can use hi-cap mags is a major plus for me. While i dont have this option "yet" my plan is to have 4 or 5 25 round mags load them all up before i start a session and go after it. When you shoot rimfire, you tend to shoot a lot...The session gets tedious when you are constantly loading those tiny .22 rounds into your 5 or ten round mag.

I hear you... the reason why is because they haven't been produced in years! Many were built for the US Government and used as marksmanship trainers for the military, ROTC all the way down to the Boy Scouts.

You'll need to keep checking all sorts of internet classifieds to find one (snipershide, rimfirecentral.com, gunbroker, etc...) and expect to pay $850-1000 for one. The draw back to using this as a trainer is that they are single shots.

Th e upside is they feel and shoot just like your "other" gun and they are ridiculously accurate.

Keep ghosting around here, there will be a lot of talk about these rifles on here and you may even find a lead on one if you ask around when (if) you are ready to drop that kind of change.

The trigger will, but... there is no bolt included. Pacific Tool and Gauge makes them. Then add your stock of choice.

Yes, it will cost you a bunch to play with these... but you will be proud to own it and the results you get in accuracy and joy will amaze you.

Dang you RicosRevenge! I was looking for a barreled action 40x for a long time and you had to show me that site! My wife is not going to be happy that I am buying another gun let alone before we move.

Edit: Whelp never mind to that, my wife will be happy. You need to prove marksmanship, and affiliation with a known shooting club to buy from them of which I can't prove ether.

Hmm, wondering how I can show that I can qualify short of going to an appleseed. I'm guessing they don't take video submissions of me shooting 1 moa groups?

I haven't shot any NRA competitions yet, everything I've shot in has has been 25 yard steel competitions, bowling pin shoots or glock matches.

Bah, there's only two things my wife doesn't give me shit about..

1. Being prepared (Matter of fact she was quite impressed yesterday when our power was down I had the generator up and powering two circuits in under 40 minutes *had to put oil and fuel in.... new generator*)

And

2. Firearms. (Her Dad was an armament tech and then a weapons inspector for the remainder of his 38 year military career with National Guard after his 2 tours of VietNam as regular Army.) She grew up around firearms and actually see's my firearms habit as a positive WOO!

But I don't go hog wild on either one...... and she has input on pretty much every other aspect of our lives hehe

That being said, i think I may go for one of these 40x's and make it into a project rifle... something for me to tinker with over the winter..... that and I need to start reloading for .40, 7.62x39 and 7.62x51... sigh...

Actually I need to get the equipment to begin reloading .308.... probably do my 7.62x39 and .40 at some point as well.

Also, there is a stock, trigger group and misc parts for sale in the bolt action sales section at the CMP forums. The price is $100. This set-up will probably compliment any heavy barreled action (700):

All you would need is a bolt... the stock has an adjustable butt plate on it, I have seen the pictures.

I have this problem where I can't buy parts one at a time, and then build it. I have to buy in quick succession, which really empties out my wallet.

$400 for a well used HBL/action ain't cheap, add Bushy 3200, A2 stock, trigger, bolt. you're over 1,000 already.

I'm going to deviate a bit from the norm. Everything that has been suggested thus far is a fine choice and I've owned a few myself. The best bang for the buck is the CZ but.....

This may not even interest you but you did mention in the subject a "22lr Sniper Rifle". A few countries have fielded a .22lr. I know the Russian's have and the Israelis. There are probably others. Both are suppressed and accurate.

The Russian Biathlon rifles are hard to find right now but they are superb. When available the Izshmash Biathlon 7-2 rifles sell for around $400 and are worth every nickle. The Biathlon stocked rifles are more. There's one on GB that's stock. Once you get one, you're done unless you want to get a can. They need no accurizing or trigger work.

I have one in a sporter stock that is an outstanding rifle. If I come across a stock that looks similar to the original, then I would change it out.

I'm thinking hard of trying to mimic one of the Israeli 10/22 configurations.

That is the truth. Pretty much as soon as you fondle it. Its so nice shooting 200 and under and having to pay attention to the wind, and still being able to spot your hits. Very very educational.
