First off, i KNOW this thread is useless without pics, but just had to share a shot i made last nite around midnight. A buddy of mine wanted to give his new foxpro a go and we knew a couple semi urban spots where coyotes frequent.

first set was dead..not even any raccoons but our second set went all of 5 minutes using a pup in distress call when a decent sized female came hauling ass into the speaker. she stopped 20 ft short of the speaker when he finally found the mute button on the remote. he cranked up the big light, and she stared right at us.

She sat down facing us, and kept looking down to the speaker (she was situated on a short hill, about 10-12 feet above and roughly 7-10 yards behind it). I sent a CCI 40gr hp and hit her right in the top of the brisket, her head was hung low, and I was aiming for the eyes and forgot to reset my elevation from the hornady loads which hit about 1.5" higher than the CCI stuff.

Complete pass-thru, severing the spine just south of her shoulders with an exit wound about 1.5" she was DOA when we got to her 2 mins later.

lasered distance was 98 yards. That is about 10-11 inches of flesh and bone that the bullet went thru with a vengance. Don't let ANYONE tell you that the WMR isnt' enough gun for song dogs...my buddy was even skeptical and was hoping for some closer range action with an xtra full turkey choke and 3" loads of #4 buck.

Might be able to head back out to the spot to get pics tomorrow.

now back to your regular programming...

PS,i kept the tail, very bushy and full of fleas. sprayed it with deep woods off before putting it in the truck...now i have to figure out what i'm gonna do with a coyote tail. I think i'll hot glue an arrow shaft into it and give it to the wife to use as a duster...yeah...that oughtta go over REAL well.

Re: .22wmr vs. coyote

I have killed several coyotes with a old Marlin 25MN in .22 Mag, using CCI Maxi-Mag +V's. It was all I had with me at the time I ran into them, shots were 75 yards or closer, one went down right away the second was a spinner and made it 60 yards or so before it went down.

Cool story, dead coyotes are always cool.

.22 mag works well for coyotes, foxes and bobcats at reasonable ranges. I really like the Remington Premier balistic tips and have taken coyotes out to 175yds with them. I did loose one I shot in the guts at 40yds. I suppose I should have had more sympathy and followed up on him but he irked me by waking me up at 1:30am trying to snatch a cat off the porch. Wont tolerate a yote with bad manners.

Yep, it's even pre-scented!!!

Re: .22wmr vs. coyote

never made it back out yesterday and likely won't for a couple weeks now. I have a complete bathroom gut and rebuild that is beginning to kick my ass. down to the studs and the floor and need to get down to the subfloor - but the yahoo's put down about 2 gallons of Liquid Nails on the linoleum. Might be easier to lift out the whole subfloor

as for the remmy ammo, my gun likes the poly tips tooo, but it REALLY likes the 30gr hornady and CCI ammo. I just scored a box of the CCI stuff and quick test in the back yard has single hole at 25 yards which is what I get with the hornady. I expect this to open up to about .75" at 100 or so. I hit a fox with the 30gr bullet last fall, and the exit wound is noticable. if you intend on keeping the pelts, the 22mag might be a bit much...depends on shot and placement tooo. I missed alll bones. If i had impacted the shoulder, i'm certain the fox would have gone down hard and there would have only been one single hole in the pelt.

speaking of "pre-scented"...how do you guys suggest getting the FUNK out? I've got a mix of salt and borax jammed into the hole now, all flesh is removed obviously, and i've replaced the salt borax mix once. probably do one more and let it hang for another 2 wks, just to ensure it's completely dry, then i'll use some shampoo to clean the fur and hopefully get rid of all the nasty old grubby pussy smell from the tail. This thing smells like a year old tampon...not that i know or anything...

Re: .22wmr vs. coyote

I dont know about other states but here in Michigan rimfire only for night hunting. I use a ruger 77/22. decent accuracy for a rimfire and fantastic to drag around in the bush being so short and lite. Its a brain scrambler!
