Taking a cruise with a$$holes.........................

Huh.

A newb pulling up a dead thread, again.......who woulda thunk it ?
Well not all bad, I enjoyed seeing the dolphins out ahead of Getaway again. We had some great sails aboard her, she was a fun boat. Alas, Hurricane Sally destroyed her despite being in a sheltered, supposedly safe area, well tied down. Now, those days are gone and we keep thinking how much less stress and cost we have to suffer through, not keeping a boat on the Gulf Coast.

My wife and I have done several Viking river cruises in Europe and enjoyed them. They do some river cruises around Christmas time and visit all the Christmas markets.
When we do ocean cruises it is usually on NCL or Celebrity.

Who gives a shit? Honestly, no one cares. Find the part where I'm bitching about river cruising, good luck.

Never been on a cruise for the same reasons you lived through.

As far as a way to travel it is fine for some people. When these people first suggested it, I warned my wife there was probably a reason they lost friends on every cruise and there was. These two assholes were astounding assholes, not just rude to us or picking arguments over silly shit, they were assholes to staff and fellow passengers alike and it made for a long two weeks. The food was great and the folks keeping up with our cabin were very nice. But, in the end Viking was just lacking for our tastes. If you are geriatric and in bed by 9pm or entertained by shore excursions geared towards people with IQ's under 100 or people who enjoy shopping for the same Chinese made garbage in every port, they had it nailed.

I have far more fun traveling solo or as a couple and finding my own stops. Any canned trips from cruise or tour companies tend towards the socialist agenda, climate religion dogma or straight communist world view. I don't need a lecture from some limey twat on hunting and how offended he is that a royal has a rifle or a farmer shoots a fox. Or commentary from some euro-trash on America for that matter. If you liked hearing America mocked by assholes who are literally kissing American asses for dollars, Viking has them employed in spades.

We are one and done for cruising.

I like to hear stories about dumbasses getting duped into taking gold digging whores and tit-dancers on cruises and then getting cucked when the slut disappears right after they board, only return to the room for a change in outfits.

Royal Caribbean is a great cruise line to go on, especially if you have kids. My wife and I have been on 2 and she’s itching to go on more. If you can get over your friends being cunts to everyone and give it another go find a RC cruise that starts or ends somewhere interesting. You don’t have to do their shore trips either, they’re just much easier more convenient

That was an enjoyable read LG7..... thanks !

Over my 44 year in the Oilfields, I spent many years Offshore. One year I did 9 months out of the year offshore.

I sent the wife and kids on a Cruise or two. And they had a good time. No way in Hell will I pay to go out on the Ocean.

Pretty well the same comment for Chopper. But I did go with the family on the Grand Canyon Chopper thing when we were all out in Vegas....

You never asked about my boats name...
52' Hunter-Morgan
The "Blow Me"
Yea, they didn't want to approve the name but being it was a sail boat and neither word has any offensive intent they tried to disapprove it, but couldn't.
The only thing it lacked was a swing, or retracting keel......sucker drafted 8 foot and after having to have it repaired the 2nd time I said screw it and sold the boat.
It was a lead faced skag.....acted as ballast and had a detrimental effect on my wallet.

Why haven't any Navy veterans chimed in on this conversation? It would be interesting to hear about the cruises they went on; especially since they started letting women serve on combat ships.
My three cruises, first two with no bitches onboard:
Japan, Singapore, Phillipines, Hong Kong, Korea, Russia

Never been on a "cruise", but I have bare boated with friends a bunch. One night in the BVI off Yost my buddy's wife got drunk, got pissed at him at dinner, and started throwing plates at him. We retreated to the dingy, went to Roxy's, and ate a full second dinner (it was BBQ night). When we got back they were all lovey dovey. Honestly, it was the only hickup, and she was very contrite the next day.

The first time we did the BVI on the third day my wife said, "I don't know why I'm so tired all the time". Yea, starting in on the pain killers and mud slides before lunch will do that to you...

That 3rd cruise looks like fun, the first two not so much.
Correct. Although I will say that my visit to Vladivostok on USS Reuben James was the most epic liberty call of my 6 years in the fleet.

The Moorings bareboat wasn't my first BVI rodeo though. But it was my daughter's intro to some of the fun I had as a teen.

When I was 15 my Dad upgraded from a Phoenix 27 to a Bertram 38 and from then on we'd be all over the US and British VI whenever his time allowed.

It was on that Bertram that I learned a lot of the seamanship and navigation that I still know.

When people first start traveling (and not knowing the ropes/their way around) it's usually a tense situation. When the wife and I first started, it was. After learning most of the "in's and out's", it's become very pleasurable/very low stress.
That perfectly sums it up.
I've been going to Japan on vacation a few times now, first time I got invited by some friends, still friends and get along well, but I will never travel with them again.
Trip wasn't ruined, but it ended up being maybe 10% of what it should have been, simply because our ideas of vacation and travelling was completely incompatible with eachother's.
They had everything planned, every thing was on a strict schedule, with a list of every attraction to visit on the entire 2 week trip.
I'm the complete opposite, gone two times since, and only pre-booked hotel for 2 days, rest was made up on the go, we only knew roughly the direction we wanted to head, was pretty much perfect.

My wife and I were avid cruzers until covid hit and sadly we never went back . Being older with no children we happened upon cunard [ 14 + cruises] and 2 cruises with the trailer trash mega ships . We learned the longer the cruise the better the cliental imho the 3 day/night brings out toe testers bad mannered buffet pigs, the 2 week and longer showed the ship in a much better light . Cunard spoils you because the staff to passengers is 1000/2000 not the mega ship 1500/5000 . If you want a laid back battery recharge cruise sans children look into cunard they aint cheap by any means but worth it

Yeah, everybody's different. We don't travel quite as loosely as you do, but a lot of what we do is along those lines.

Where multiple couples run into problems is that the "planning" couple will get their noses out of joint when the other couple doesn't want to follow the regimented program. Then the friction and resentment starts.

It's also hard for experienced travelers to travel with inexperienced ones, particularly if the inexperienced ones are "know it alls".

Just way too many variables involved to have a high likelihood of success when multiple people/couples are trying to travel together.

Only have done one cruise and stayed in Grand Suite. Spoiled me as we basically had the top floor to ourselves. Went down to buffet once and never again for reasons above.

Only way I'm ever doing on again would be a suite.

3 sides to every story ..

While I don’t doubt that woman sucked, I have never been in any non “historical or political” discussion where the bombing of Japan came up.

I think you might have been reading the room wrong at times and been in conversation that you shouldn’t be having anyway..knowing the stark differences in opinion that are out there.

First rule..never talk politics or religion, we’ve all heard that before.

Now if she just burst on the scene after getting off the egg line and asked what do you think about how WW2 ended in the pacific..she’s a bitch ..and you should have said..how’s the eggs..

But that’s just me

She is a bitch. She was a bitch and more than likely she is a bitch to this day.

Every miserable event was literally started or made far worse by this woman. Changing the subject was pointless, she would not on her best day, just drop it. The good news????? She only eats on the starboard side of the boat. What luck!! So we had the port side of the galley to ourselves.

While having dinner in the fancy sit down restaurant, she used her napkin and water glass to sit washing her feet. This is a woman with a Phd and she thought that was perfectly acceptable.

She started arguing on day one because the step counter on my phone showed I had walked farther than her husband and she thought that wasn't possible because her husband (who is 15 years younger) was taller and should have walked farther or some such shit. The highlight of the age difference was a couple sitting next to them on a tour bus asked if she was his mom. hahahahahaha

Yeah, we all know the rules about religion and politics. Everyone but this bitch. She opened dinner conversation on about day three asking my wife if she believed in God? I strongly suggested a new topic to no avail. My wife was polite but this bitch would not drop it.

We had one 24 hours stretch at sea that included a night ride thru a mild storm. Hence the time spent watching the ships TV. Found a show on Paul Tibbets and watched it. Next morning at breakfast, before the tour of the day, got asked what we did for the evening. Sadly I replied. We watched the storms and caught a documentary on the tube them went to bed. This bitches head exploded. Apparently, she thought Harry Truman was stupid and the worst president ever. Who knew? Well honestly, who gives a shit?

So here we are over 18 months later. We don't have to go back and still will not travel with these people. If we ever cruise again, it will be on a different line. The primary reason for the trip was to take a cruise with people who had done this before and see how it works. Food was still good, staff was still helpful and the ship was clean.

If we do this again, will we use Viking? Probably not. My wife disliked the dead ship environment. Entertainment consisted of a geriatric lecture typically from some snide Brit who kept slipping snitty comments about hunting, gun owners or Americans into their bland lifeless lectures. Some 1980's British talent show hacks performing their lame 1980's acts filled in the gaps. The only store on the boat did not sell Motrin or any headache tablet, if you needed something you hunted it down on shore.

You can only play Scrabble and listen to the cellist drone along for so long. When you have your fill of that excitement, then you can go to the bow lounge and drink coffee while looking for the one seabird in 40 sq miles.

This is a thread that does not seem to want to die. Wow.

If I may?:

1) Royal Caribbean cruises. None of that floating city bus trash

2) Don’t ever travel with someone you don’t know very, very well unless they are family
I’ll dredge my response back up and implore you to give a cruise another shot. You’ll need to do some more digging into what you really want out of the trip but they can be awesome.

Case in point: our last vacation this fall. A repositioning cruise from Vancouver to Hawaii. In the fall and spring they take a ship from Alaska to Hawaii or vice versa to keep the ship making money

It was on Royal Caribbean which may be the only cruise line we ever use. Nothing but great experiences, though only 2 for me/3 for the wife. I don’t remember the ship name, it was one of their mid-size ships but there were still plenty of activities for us and the kids(7,6,3 all boys). Food was great including the buffet. Plenty of amenities. I went to the gym a few times and my wife got her hair did for a night of fancy schmancy dinner. Group activities, movies, performances(ours was a Cirque de Soleil type show) and all possible without the kids if you wanted. Kid care was included for the two older ones but cost a little extra for the youngest. The expensive babysitters were all required to have some sort of teaching cert. We didn’t take them every day but they had such a good time that they were annoyed when they couldn’t go one of the days.
