230 grn hybrids for 300 win

My new Berger Reloading book shows 72.9 gr of H1000 at 2711fps or 76.5 gr of Retumbo at 2764 fps as max loads. It is noted that these are loaded at SAIMI specs COAL of 3.340" and from a 26" barrel. If you are loading them in most factory rifles you will want to load them out closer to the lands for accuracy and should be able to bump up those charges a little. FYI, I was able to load the 210 Bergers up to 76 grains of H1000 seated out long in a factory Remington. When in doubt, start low and work up!

I'm running them with 74.5 Retumbo with fgm215m at 3.765" coal out of a trued 700 action throated specifically for the 230's. 30"
Broughton 5c 1:10. I'm getting just a hair over 3,000 fps. It's on par with the .338 Lapua out to 1500 yards except cheaper!!

I run 75 gr. H1000 on my steyr ssg 23.6 in. Barrel at 2640. I also shoot the hornady 225 with the same load and they fly out at 2718 fps. SD is about 17 fps with my horadys and less than 10 fps with my bergers. Nosler custom brass and 215m primers for both so I'm not sure what that is all about. Bergers always seem to have a smaller SD than the other bullets. If anyone knows please feel free to educate me.
How did you measure your velocity?
3000 fps is crazy fast and you load is ultra mild?
I have a 28" tube and I am nowhere near that fast.

Hodgdon has listings fot that bullet.
Max load of 77.0 grains of Retumbo for 2714 fps @ only 55,200 psi
Max load of 76 grains of H-1000 for 2721 fps @ 58200 psi
They also show a few other powders.

2 ways. Chrono data and real world data. I actually didn't believe it myself (chronograph) but 1st shot at 900 yards and "ping". Also you have to take into consideration the barrel make. A Broughton 5c is known for being super fast. I got my load data from Bergers manual and they also say+ 25 to 30 fps per inch past 26". So theoretically that's 100 to 120 fps faster than 26".
There is a hide member on here some where that actually made my mind up on the Broughton. He was shooting the 215 Berger at over 3100 and that was from a 26" Broughton. Scenaro contour. He was whacking antelope at 1285 yards.
Lets put it this way... When I was breaking the rifle in I bought a cheap box of fusion bullets. The box said 3100 fps. I was getting 3315. Confirmed at 600 yards.
I understand all of that, but you load would normally start out at 2600fps in a 26" tube.
4 inches X 25fps=100fps Somehow you gained another 200fps?
I'm not a buyer nor do I believe the 5r Broughton bought you 200fps.
I have lots of friends with that barrel....good barrel, but it isn't that fast.

I guess what I was coming to is there is no free lunch where it comes to velocity and pressure. In other words to get the velocity you are talking about something is generating a great deal of pressure.
Be it short leade, thick brass, extremely tight chamber, tight bore, or whatever...something is creating your pressure and resultant velocity.
I have seen this before in short leade 300Winchesters...In fact I loaded for one last night.
A while ago we shot some old high energy 200 gr Nosler partitions through the gun....I noticed the gun barking excessively so we ran it across the chrono...we near chit when we saw the velocity just under 3100fps!
The brass showed no sign of significant pressure, but I can assure you it was there...In scary spades!
To carry things on step further a 230 is a very long bullet that takes up a great deal more room in the case and serves to further increase pressure.

Not a problem at all. No offense taken. This load was taken into consideration after Litz personally recommended the " longer the better ". Hence the ridiculous Coal. This rifle was made specifically for big boys and it does its job very well. At 900 it was hitting a 2x2' ar 500 plate so hard that it was literally knocking it over and I had it wedged inbetween 2 railroad cross ties. It's sheer hell on steel .... Can't wait for deer season...
I can only run 72.5 grains of H-1000 with the 210's through my Krieger. 79 grains is supposed to be max at 2850fps. At 77 grains my cases started to crack after two fiings and I was geting 3050 fps. Some bores are just faster than others. At 72.5 grains I'm getting 2825fps.
That load/performance is actually a little better than the 338LM; at least the one I'm shooting. I just finished Litzs' new book and starting to think a new bbl on the 300wm would have been a better option than adding the 338 and all it's life support equipment.
