I am building a .243 and I am just curious what everyone else would do with the Barrel such as length and contour? I am going with a 1 in 7.5 twist with a Brux Barrel... at least that's my thoughts for now.

I was going to build a hunting rifle with an 8 twist in 243AI. I was going to go with a 22" medium palma for light weight. The small bore diameter of the 6mm would allow for a smaller contour as the relationship between bore size to outside barrel diameter is still very good even with the smaller contour.

Look into the 243 AI before your smith cuts the chamber.

I'm planning on doing nearly an identical barrel setup at the first of the year for my DTA. I'm most likely going to run a straight barrel. My reasoning is it will be relatively easy to send in to be set back and chambered once the throat goes away. I'll also be taking advantage of the short oal length of the DTA and run a 30" tube.

I have a 243AI and love it, a little more velocity is a great thing, when you want it, and the case life is much better than a standard 243.

What size projectiles, any interest in suppressing: answering these will help. A 1:7.5 will stabilize at least 105s if not 115s. My gun loves the 105 Bergers. When I can find some 105 Amax, I'll run those if the gun likes them.

For hunting, there are many really good bullets out there. I prefer Barnes TSX or TTSX, but it all depends on what the gun likes.

Barrel taper depends on many things, you need to be very specific about what is most important and what is not.

VLDs like being hammed. May be too long for the magazine. .243 throats grow fast. Hybrids give less fuss, in my experience. I haven't had to tweak .260 OAL because of throat erosion yet. Just makes it easy. BC is great and hybrid is very forgiving.

Also keep in mind speed limits at matches.

Have a Krieger standard target 7.5 twist finished at 26" that slings the 105 hybrids at 3150 with 44.3 grains of H4831sc into .40 groups at 200yds. Could be a freak for slinging them that fast, but either way it's MINE!!! (and its a straight 243 win)

I built a .243AI awhile back on a Savage 110 action. 26" medium taper 1-8.5 twist. Loves 105AMax's. In the .3moa range out to about 375 yards. I smoked a coyote in the head at 627y last deer season. If I had it to do again I would opt for a slightly faster twist for the 115grs.
