Im thinking the obvious answer here is yes but Id like some second, third and fourth opinions or even more. Ive been requested to turn a standard .243 into a .243 Ackley improved. Obviously the meat left on the shoulder of the contour would be the main issue but is it goer for success or would a new barrel be the safest bet.

Depending on the barrel. If it's a factory barrel, I would replace the barrel with a new custom barrel. If it is a custom barrel, step it back 1/4" to 1/2" and have at it. Get the GO, NO/GO guages the same time or at least from the same people that grinds your reamer.

me thinks a guy wrote a whole book about this very subject....and made some very succinct conclusions....in fact he EVEN made his very own cartridge.....and rifle to launch said cartridge.....AND competes with it........win championships also......

From what I have seen and been told by my gunsmith about AI cases
is you should set the head space at zero.
Just a SLIGHT amount of pressure when you shut the bolt.
When I started reloading for my full custom 6x47Lapua that is what I did.

No need to leave it shorter. The fireforming essentially just blows the shoulder forward.
I know a number of guys who run factory barrels punched to various AI chamberings. .243AI is one of the more popular

Read carefully what Victor says...the AI headspaces unfired brass on the junction of neck and shoulder...not on some datum line down the shoulder. If you get the guages and reamers from the same company, you should be able to chamber factory cartridges and fire them without problems. Using a mismatched set may cause headspace problems.
