.243 vs .260 vs 6.5x47 Lapua

Re: .243 vs .260 vs 6.5x47 Lapua

I have shot the barrels out of 3 260s and one 243. My 243 has around 2800 rounds through it right now and will shoot .5 MOA at 600yds if I do my job but it will not hold past 600yds. It just starts to open up more esp at 800 to 1000yds.

I talked to an old highpower shooter and he told me that this is exactly what happens to his rifles when the barrels start going south. They loose accuracy at 1000yds then he shoots them at the 600yd matches for another 500 or so rounds then tosses them.

There "Are" guys getting 3000rds out of them but once again it depends on what you want your accuracy demands are.

I am rebrreling mine to another 260 for now. I really like the 123s I think they are the best of both worlds and will come close to running with most anything. They are more accurate in my rifles than the 139s or 140s.

Like someone said, "You just can't go wrong with any of the three"!!

What also helps to keep the barrel running well is using Tubb's TMS rounds. Keep the throat from getting like alligator skin and this helps keep the accuracy longer. I use it in my .243 and I know others that do also. 2 TMS rounds every 300 rounds shot works well.

So your basic paper punching and allowing the barrel to cool will have greatly increased barrel life?

I knew it helped but from what I am hearing it can make a pretty substantial difference.
