H380 & H414 work great. Take a look at Hodgdon's website for many more choices: https://www.hodgdonreloading.com/reloading-data-centerLooking for a powder for some light 243 varmit loads. Other than varget are there any other contenders?
I don't have any load data, but I've heard about a few folks who had real trouble with those splashing at higher speeds with fast twist 243 or 6 creed. I've even heard of them splashing at 6mm arc speeds with 1-7.5 twist barrels. Just something to consider.
I'm talking about them exploding on impact. No penetration.Presume by "splashing" you are talking about the bullet coming apart and blowing up mid-flight?
Never heard that term used to describe this situation??
Interesting, and very good to know! I haven't used the VMAX, but do run 70gn Nosler BT's with H414 and my buddies use the 55gn BT's over H380 for both coyotes and Whitetails (shot placement is everything).I'm talking about them exploding on impact. No penetration.
Are you saving hides? What is your barrel length and twist rate?Is there any good way to figure out if they’re splashing before I shoot a coyote or fox with them.
I’m not saving hides just looking for a semi flat shooting 300 yard gun for varmits. My original choice was a 204 ruger but a local shop made me a deal with a 243 that I couldn’t refuse. I’ve got a 22 in barrel with a 9.25 twist rate but I’m already looking to swap a 26 in barrel if need be.Are you saving hides? What is your barrel length and twist rate?
As a test, shoot a pumpkin, watermelon, Jello, Ballistic gel, or similar covered with a towel, should be a close enough approximation to get an idea of performance.
Personally, I can't see either varmint surviving something like that? But, if they are that sensitive, hitting a blade of grass or a leaf will cause them to come apart, a twig will 100% cause it to come apart.....
How temp stable are powders such as H414 and H380?22" is MUCH handier than a 26", for hunting. Twist rate should be just fine for light bullets. As far as accuracy and performance, you won't know until you try.
FYI: Winchester 760 is the same as H414. Hodgdon seems to just show 760 for reasons unknown????? I've never seen 760 on a shelf, but LOTS of H414 back in the day....
87s are probably the better choice but I bought the 58s on sale just to give it a go.Funny, I am currently working up a nearly identical load (243, 20" 9 twist, 58v-max).
I tested Varget and H4895. It may be just the lots I have, but I found H4895 to be much faster across the board. 43.0 grains gave me about 3850 fps out of a 20" barrel, whereas 44.0 grains of Varget (both book max from Hodgdon) gave me 3730.
I'm trying the 58s mostly as a Prairie Dog exploder and because I have a couple boxes. For a pure coyote bullet, @Hecouldgoalltheway is correct. It's hard to beat the 87 v-max.
75. Grain sierra’s brother, but I have yet to make contact with fur and see what happens.I shoot a bunch of coyotes, and the hides are worthless in TN where I live. I want a flat shooting drt bullet. The 87gr vmax from both 6mm arc and 6mm creed just fold them instantly. My buddy has been playing with 70's, and that might be the sweet spot for the 6mm arc. I'll probably stay with the 87gr with the 6mm creed.
Winchester 760 is what I use with the 58 vmax.
I didn’t have anything suitable, but I was able to find 2 pounds of accurate 2200 we will see how that goesWinchester 760 is what I use with the 58 vmax.
That powder will be much too fast for the 243. Be careful!!!I didn’t have anything suitable, but I was able to find 2 pounds of accurate 2200 we will see how that goes
AKA: H414
Correct!Is Winchester 760 100% the same as h414?
Meaning it’s just rebranded so no need to work up a new load?
6mm arcThat powder will be much too fast for the 243. Be careful!!!
Thank you.Correct!
Okay that makes sense. 2200 is a good powder in that burn rate.6mm arc
