i was at my local gun shop the other day and came across a siq sauer 25-06 bolt action with a nice looking synthetic stock for 475 bucks thought it was a miss print so i asked the dealer he said a guy bought it from him shot about 20rnds and decided it wasnt for him,so im thinking i might add this baby to my collection,but first how hard does this thing kick, im not recoil shy so what would you rate it as compared to a 308,30-06 or what

My dad hunts with a Browning A-Bolt Medallion .25-06 that I worked up loads for, sighted in blah blah blah. I loaded his up with Nosler 115s and it wasn't much more than my .243. It's less than a .308 and.30-06 for sure...think more along the lines of a reduced recoil .270.

I have a Remington 700 VS in 25-06. Recoil is not bad at all. I can easily put 50 or more rounds through it in a day with no discomfort.
It's stouter than a .243 on recoil, but not a lot. Especially if you use the l00gr or less bullets. Mine is extremely accurate and really fun to shoot. It's also a very versatile cartridge. Works great on anything from ground hogs to large deer.

25-06 is a great round, a super fast flat shooting and highly accurate round for light to medium game. A couple of things, hard on the ears, somewhat shorter barrel life, harder to find cartridges off the shelf. But all the rest? Recoil, accuracy, feed, reach..excellent. Know idea where you live, but if you need to reach way out, this is a rifle you can zero at 200 yards and only drop around 20" at 400 yards, still cooking at over 1,100 energy.

Subjective assessment of recoil is that to me it is not as stout as the 308 with heavier loads, and definitely not the 30-06.

How long the barrel lasts is to some degree going to depend on how you use it and what your accuracy expectation is. Shoot is repeatedly without cooling it down and the barrel will be toast in 1000rds. Take it easy and it should go 2-3000, longer if all you want is "minute of coyote" accuracy.

I think the recoil is a little more than a Bob but less than a 308. A lot will have to do with the weight of the rifle with base rings and scope.
As others have said it is a very flat shooting rifle that will be great for pronghorns if you are so inclined.

i have a rem 700 feather weight in 25-06 under 6.75lbs with scope.i shoot 75g-120g out of it, very little recoil.looks like a good deal on that rifle.

I seriously considered 25-06 for my 13-year-old sons' deer rifles (Christmas presents to celebrate their first successful deer hunts). I ended up with 270s primarily because there are more bullet options (and factory ammo, although I reload) available. Neither is particularly bothered by the 270 recoil, nor is my 107-pound wife, so I wouldn't worry about the 25-06. Sounds like a deal to me!

my dad used to take one and a 338 Win Mag to Colorado to Elk hunt and he would use the 25-06 when someone would be dumb enough to tell him "you can't hunt Elk with that" just to prove them wrong

Recoil is almost a non issue even on lighter rifles it aint too bad. As others have mentioned the only con I see about the 25-06 is bullet selection (Not too much). But it should be hell on coyotes IMO as we dont have any here in Hawaii so no first hand experience

I have been hunting white tails for several years using the 25-06. In fact I have a thread in the hunting section about using the 25-06 for long range Antelope hunting. I can say that my Styer Mountain rifle in 25-06 is deadly on white tails with Winchester 90gr PEP Super-X ammo. Not sure what you are planning on shooting with your rifle but it appears from most accounts that the 25-06 is a very versatile cartridge and will get the job done at longer ranges on pretty much everything with 4 legs in north America with the exception of bears, bison, buffalo, or moose.
I will say that I disagree with most on this thread about recoil. My 25-06 Styer kicks like a mule even with the 90gr bullets. I went so far as to have a Limb Saver pad put on it and it only tamed the rifle marginally! It still feels about like a .308 Win to me. It sounds like you picked up a great rifle and got a smokin’ deal too. Good luck!

got the rifle home it is a shr 970 looking for a weaver rail for it,but havent found one yet,also looking at getting one of those bushnell elite tactical 10x40 mill dot scopes for it does anyone have one and are they a good scope

I had a 4-12 redfield on 2 different yote rifles in the 70s and 80s and I could see to make kills on that size game to 600 yds or so. Slap it on and shoot it for a while, I think it will work for what you're going to do.

I have not played with the 10X Bushnell, but I recently bought a 3-12 44mm FFP Mil/Mil Elite 4200 and it rocks! One of the best scopes I have considering the price. You might look around, several have popped up here in the for sale section. Another consideration would be the new Weaver Tactical 3.5-15 FFP Mil/Mil or the Viper PST 4-16. These three scopes have been getting some very good reviews here and won't clean you out of cash.
