Rifle Scopes $2500 to Blow on Glass Opinions welcome

I have liquidated some funds sold and traded some things, and gotten myself in the position to purchase some new glass. After my snafu with the second focal plane Nightforce at the match the other day it has become aparent to me that it is nescesary to own a first focal scope. This scope will ride my match rifle and possibly double on my hunting rifle since I run pic rails on all my rifle for this reason. I'm even debating listing my NXS 5.5-22x56 NPR1 in order to go all FFP on my rifles. I think this ammount puts me in the range of Used USO , new NF F1 3.5-15 or used S&B. Here is the deal I can get a new 3.5-15 nxs for this price or used USO 5-25 is the extra magnification worth it. Then nightforce is a little smaller and lighter. This scope will be used from 308-300ultra. I do prefer MOA based reticles which nightforce and uso both offer. I know I know all the cool kids are using mil/mil, but I like MOA. I think in inches and minutes not centimeters and meters and mils. Basically what I'm asking is, is the USO 5-25 that much more scope than the NXS F1 3.5-15 considering the amount of internal elevation you lose with the USO compared to the NF.

F1 with MRAD knobs and MLR2.0 reticle. Done. IMO one of the best scopes out there. You also almost never hear of a NF needing repair.

My vote would go for one of these three:

NF F1 MLR2.0, S&B 4-16 (there's a great deal on a single turn model in the classifieds right now), or a USO.

NF might be the best scope for the money with a couple hundred left over! The MLR2.0 reticle is the bee's knee's.

As above, I would try and pick up a 4-16 S&B. If you can't find one I would fall back to a Premier, then a Vortex Razor. The Schmidt and Premier are head and shoulders better than the others available at your price point.

On another note, S&B and Premier will return 95%+ of your money back, if you buy used. US Optics offers too much customization which is a good thing, but it's more difficult to sell b/c it might be too taste specific...

They'll all have a problem at some point.

Premier is perhaps a gamble right now, but the price reflects that. They are every bit the scope SB is (premier glass is superior in my opinion), but way, way less money right now. Provided Premiers transition with their new parent company goes well, you'll make money by buying a Premier right now.

The flip side however, is if Premier goes tits up and discontinues support, your scope will lose 50-75% of it's value.

i have a USO 5-25X58 T-PAL i love it. mine is mil-mil and used on .308

i have never took it past 1000 yards. @1000 yards im using 15X mag so there is plenty of Mag to go as far as you need to.

plus 3 on USO and Lazy being the "Man". His customer service is second to none. I have a USO 3.5x17 and love it. I thought I was having problems with it, Lazy spend an hour on the phone with me an midnight to help me fix the problem. turned out the guy who mounted and leveled my scope never tightend the scope rings. But Lazy spent the time with me to bird dog it, the kicker is, I didnt purchase my scope from him, I will in the future though.

I have had problems with both Premier and S&B, never a problem with NF. All I am saying is they all can have problems. I am sure people have had problems with NF. The NF to me is the best scope on the market for the money. If NF ever comes out with a 5-25 in first focal plane and is near the same price as the current 3-15 f1, my S&B will probably go up for sale. It is not $1,500 dollars better than the NF. I have seen too many issues with Premier.

I'd personally go NF. I tried to like USO but my 3.2-17 had unimpressive glass in it and the #1 windage knob was vague as hell.

Erector issues on a brand new 5-25 out of the box. All of S&B's repair people are currently in Germany and won't be back until I believe the 10th of next month. They said not to send it in until they get back.

I recently aquired one of these and I am extremely pleased with the optic at this point. Great glass, compact and light, FFP, CCW turretts, 10mil per rev., ZS, etc. I'm not sure if March offers a FFP MOA reticle, but Ian at Kelby's would have that answer for you. I know they offer a SFP MOA, as my hunting partner has had one for a couple of years now. I am first and foremost a hunter with limited experience shooting matches. The March will fill my needs perfectly and then some. This would fit within your budget and leave enough for some APA rings, I have my March set in a set of these as well and highly suggest trying some out!

Strange, one of my favorite things about USO is the feeling of the knobs. They feel less stressed out than others I have tried. Often the clicks of a knob remind me of those rotating noisemakers that people used to swing around at carnivals and such. Kind of imprecise, harsh, and even dry feeling. USO's remind me more of ball bearings in a race. The clicks are definite and particularly solid feeling but also smooth. I agree that they feel different than many other makers but I think they are better feeling not worse. I also never accidentally skip over to many clicks and loose count. This sometimes happens to me with some of the harsher knobs out there that seem to offer resistance only at the clicks with a feeling of free fall between.

I guess on man's vague can be another man's smooth. I think you are downright crazy on the glass though. USO has very good glass. I think it is not up with Premier and S&B but I find it better than Nightforce. I really consider Nightforce as more comparable to Vortex Razors and the SS HD scopes.

I agree with your sentiments, over the last 9 months, I've upgraded all my scopes to PRHs, and now have 5. The most I've paid is 2400 for a 5-25 with no rings. Least I've paid was 2000 for a 3-15 with a set of Seekins rings.

Various USO's I've tried have been all over the map as far as click feel and glass quality; they are not consistent from scope to scope. Doing a resolution test with 2 shooters my 3.2-17 resolved worse than two NF's and worse than a $300 Burris. All were set to 15x to try to make things fair, but the USO was simply far behind the others. A really disappointing experience as I truly wanted to like US Optics, but the scope was unimpressive.

How about throwing the 4-16 Steiner in the mix. Schmidt glass, rock solid build, dead nuts tracking and for $2300 you have $200 left over for any set of rings you would want.

So far my new S&B PM II 5-25X56mm H59 is functioning perfectly, BUT I had ship-it-to-Austria problems with TWO Swarovkis in the mid 1990's (I believe Kahles was manufacturing Swarovski scopes then). In one scope the erector canted within the tube; in the other scope the integral Stanag mounts sheared off the tube. What a headache! Over 6 months turn around time! For that reason I had to give long and hard thought before purchasing any European glass. The breakthrough points for purchasing the S&B were: (1) the rave reviews of S&B scopes and (2) EuroOptic said that S&B repairs are now done in the USA.

It is not my scope but a friend. We just got into shooting comps and both had 3-15 Premiers. We both wanted more magnification so we both ordered the S&B's. My scope is perfect and his was messed up out of the box. When he pulled it out the elevation turret was into the second rev. the pop up indicator was up. He went to dial it down and when it got to 13 it stuck. Did not want to go pass 13 into the first rev.

I have no doubt S&B will take care of it. He just has to wait until their repair people get back state side. They are in Germany for training.

If you fancied a 2 1/2 hour drive I could have let you look at a hand full of scopes side by side. Right now I have Bushnell, USO, Leupold MK6, Vortex Razor and a S&B sitting here. I can usually scare up a NXS too.

It was about 10 days from the time I shipped, to getting it back. They said this was slower than usual, because their purging machine thing was out of commission for a couple days.

He called S&B and they discussed it and he was told to send it in when their repair people got back from Germany. Not sure what the issue was and won't know for sure until they get a chance to look at it.

i have the unlighted reticle version on order. i have the 5-40x and like it so much i decided by buy a 2nd march. the 5-40 is going on a new custom 260 build and the 3-24 replaces the 5-40 on my 5r.

been very pleased with the march. was going to buy a s&b but didnt want to wait. the 5-40 was available. the reticle in the 3-24 is the same as the 5-40. everyone that looks through the scope likes it. everyone that twists the knobs is impressed. for your price point this would be a good choice. if i was going up another 1k it would either be another 5-40 or a s&b pmII.

If 3-15 was acceptable, I would recommend Premier Light Tactical. Super optics, strongly built, and lighter so positional shooting would be easier. Also they run $2,200 which is well within your budget.

I recently aquired one of these and I am extremely pleased with the optic at this point. Great glass, compact and light, FFP, CCW turretts, 10mil per rev., ZS, etc. I'm not sure if March offers a FFP MOA reticle, but Ian at Kelby's would have that answer for you. I know they offer a SFP MOA, as my hunting partner has had one for a couple of years now. I am first and foremost a hunter with limited experience shooting matches. The March will fill my needs perfectly and then some. This would fit within your budget and leave enough for some APA rings, I have my March set in a set of these as well and highly suggest trying some out! </div></div>

i have the unlighted reticle version on order. i have the 5-40x and like it so much i decided by buy a 2nd march. the 5-40 is going on a new custom 260 build and the 3-24 replaces the 5-40 on my 5r.

been very pleased with the march. was going to buy a s&b but didnt want to wait. the 5-40 was available. the reticle in the 3-24 is the same as the 5-40. everyone that looks through the scope likes it. everyone that twists the knobs is impressed. for your price point this would be a good choice. if i was going up another 1k it would either be another 5-40 or a s&b pmII. </div></div>


I've tried to get a hold of a live person at Kelbeys last week to see what the wait time is on the March F . How long did you have to wait for your FX ? looking for the non illuminated </div></div>

1 week. but i caught him at the right time. the 3-24 is probably a month or so out but thats ok, my custom build isnt ready until october.

the way i got the 5-40 was to check with kelby. he said some coming in next week he'd call. i didnt get a call but i called back. one was coming in the next day and i snagged it.

since i've dealt with him before with good results i gave him my cc for the charge on the 3-24 when it comes in to hold it for me.

i asked him about bout the number of 5-40s sold. he said around 100 total in the states.

I'm a NF fan but until they put out a F1 wit higher mag the Vortex Razor is an excellent choice for FFP. I personally don't think the Razor is better then NF but they are very good and have some options that NF doesn't offer yet. CS and warranty are as good as it gets. And you can get a Vortex in MOA .

According to an email I received today, the March FX 5-40x56mm is expected in 2 weeks and will cost $3,400.

Other than the obvious magnification differences, what comments do you have comparing the S&B PMII 5-25 and the March FX 5-40?

If you don't absolutely need the higher magnification, you cannot go wrong with the Nightforce F1. You can get some good used ones in the Optics section well under your price range. I've bought two F1's in the past 6 months and I love them.

I mostly shoot F T/R and steel out to 1K and I don't feel under-glassed a bit.
