Guys, I'm a service rifle competitor new to this discipline.Looking for a starting point for 260 handloads using Varget powder & 140smk's and or 140 Amax's. Will be pushed thru a 26" Broughton 8 twist.

Re: 260 loads w/ varget?

I know everyone loves the old H4350; however, I have had good luck with the ole IMR4350. Only problem I run into is that if I shoot when it is really hot out & the shells sit in the sun I can tell that there is a velocity difference.

Re: 260 loads w/ varget?

Here is a load with the 140 AMAX and H4831SC, i would look for a little slower burning powder than Varget. I copy and pasted this from a previous post of mine:

Here are the people off the top of my head that run 47ish grains of H4831SC which is exactly the same as the 4831. Much past 47.2 grains of H4831 or 4831SC and accuracy starts to open up. Im getting 2820ish with the 140 and a 24" barrel. The node you want to hit on if you want the most speed out of your 260 is anywhere in the 46.4-47.4 range. Hope this helps some

Me,Vu and all the NorCal 260 shooters, Terry Cross ran/runs it. Its a nice shooting load, but is/can be compressed with the 140 gr bullets. I shoot the 140 AMAX and its not compressed much due to my seating depth. I have never run into any pressure issues with this load from 40 degrees to 95-100 degrees.

H4831 wont give you the speed that 4350 or RE17 will, but speed isnt my main concern. Just for shits and giggles this target is a 5 shot group @ 725...we were seeing how much of a difference in wind drift between my 260 and a 308, we were both holding center of the 4 boxes. But what im getting at is the vertical spread is very little with the 4831 and 4831SC. The picture shows maybe 3.5 to 4 inches of vertical spread

Re: 260 loads w/ varget?

Thanks for the help guys. I have been looking at 4350&4831sc quite a bit. But was wondering about Varget because I'm sitting on three 8lb jugs.

Re: 260 loads w/ varget?

I have been working up loads for my 260 over the last week and have tried Re19, 4831sc, Re22, and Varget. With 142SMK's, 46.0gr provided the best accuracy (4 shots into .3MOA) but the velocity running a little low (2642 avg). I tried 46.5 and 47.0, but the accuracy started to go. With Re19, I have tried 45.0 & 45.5 and the accuracy has been around .75MOA and the velocity was in the 2725 range. I have had the best accuracy/velocity combination with the Varget/140 AMAX combo. I loaded 39.0, 39.5, and 40.0 this afternoon. The 39gr came in at about .75MOA, the 39.5 at about .6, and the 40.0 was amazing! It is the smallest group I have ever shot, 5 rounds into .255MOA @ 2733fps avg. I am going to try 40.5 and 41.0 tomorrow if the weather permits. Gotta give the credit to the builder though. Jim See at Center Shot rifles is one hell of a gunsmith!

123 smk's
Rem brass
cci br2
39.1 varget
2.810 oal
4150 feet ASL
Put of my 26" shilen tube I'm seeing 2920 +/-. No pressure signs, I plan on upping it a taste for just to see what happens.

Re: 260 loads w/ varget?

Anybody using varget with their ar-260 rem. I have a 260 rem. 20" 1-9 twist poly 3 groove from black hole weaponry and a bunch of varget on hand so I figure I might aswell use it. I plan on loading the 123 grain lapuas for this barrel with remington brass.
