My 11 year old son will be able to big game hunt in Colorado this coming fall when he turns 12. In CO youths can not hunt big game until they turn 12. He will be hunting deer antelope. Anyways, he will be shooting a 260 Rem with a 20" barrel. I'm debating between the Barnes LRX 127gr and the Nosler Accubond Long Range 129gr. Any suggestions would be appreciated on bullets and powders.

If you aren't talking crazy distances, Sierra pro hunters and Speer work well too. Noslers are always a solid choice and you can get overruns or blems from shooters pro shop at a good price.

The accubond LR has a significantly better BC. Not sure that would show itself at normal hunting distances though. Shoot each of them, I’m sure one will stand out for you.
Thanks. Nosler says they open up at close range and will open up down to 1,300 FPS. Wonder how they will do if they hit bone.

Have the same set up for my son, it shoots the 142gr ABLRs better than the 129s but he took his first elk with the 129gr at 617 yards 1 shot DRT. Since then we've taken 5 elk and several muley and whitetail with it with the 142s all 1 shot DRTs some as close as 50 yards. It has a muzzle brake so you can actually watch the bullet impact the target through the scope.

I have a friend who shoots a Savage 260 Remington. I loaded Nosler 130 Accubonds for her to shoot out of it. Five one-shot kills on deer, & one Montana antelope @ around 300 yards, one shot, & down.... Unless you're talking Long Range, the regular Accubonds work fine!!!

I appreciate the advice. The regular Accubonds have a higher low end velocity to open up (around 1,800 fps vs 1,300 in the ABLR). I assume that means they are a tougher bullets so they go thru bone better.

I used the Berger 130 VLD hunting in my 260 when I first started hunting out west. Killed deer and antelope easily at a pedestrian 2,780 fps.

I should never have sold that rifle....

I would load up some 6.5mm 140 VLDs Berger’s and call it a day. That’s the only hunting bullet I’ll ever use after trying several. Plus they have a very high retention weight.
