When comparing the two, is there any practical difference between the 6.5mm 130VLD at 2,900 fps vs. the 7mm 140 VLD at 2,800?

If you consider berger's suggested minimum velocity for proper expansion of 1800 fps your max effective hunting range of each are as follows:
260 - 725yrds / 1823 fps / 959 ftlbs
7-08 - 625 yrds / 1818 fps / 1025 ftlbs
For comparing drop and wind:
600 yards
260 - drop 75.5 / wind 22.8 / 1990 fps / 1143 ftlbs
7-08 - drop 84.1 / wind 26.1 / 1853 fps / 1068 ftlbs
1000 yards
260 - drop 292.9 / wind 73.2 / 1478 fps / 631 ftlbs
7-08 - drop 333.2 / wind 85.5 / 1327 fps / 547 ftlbs
Since you asked about these two loads there is a big difference in my opinion. Now I know there are other options where you can get similar performance from the 7-08 with the 168 vld but then you lose more velocity and gain recoil plus you are even harder pressed to stuff that long bullet into a aics mag. For this example you gain 100 yards of Hinton range and save over 12" of wind drift at 1000 for range use. I'd go 260 and have personally as I'm having one built now. Just my opinion.

You can get the 140vlds faster than 2800. I am pushing a 162amax out of my 7mm-08 at 2750fps and that is not even pushing it yet. I would bet you could get a 140vld over 2900fps in a 24-26" barrel.

yup.. both bullets higher speeds.
Son's 7mm-08 with 139 SST's is 2985 with H4350. Deadly hunting round. I know PGS shoots his 130VLD's in the 260 GAP at or just shy of 3000

I've been watching PGS kill stuff with his GAP so much, I've started working up a build with Ken Lin for my first GAP....

To get the 6.5mm with a 140 going 2800+ is very easy. Most can get 2900+ if they try and the amax will walk right past the VLD.

I've just started working with the 140VLD in my 7-08. With the load I've settled on, I can get just over 2900 from the 24" 1:8.7 Bartlein using a Winchester case, fed210 primer, and Varget.
The rifle is essentially a GAP Non-typical which was built with hunting in mind, not 1000 yard shots. I do intend to stretch it out and try some 168VLDs and 162A-max when hunt season winds down.
All in all, I don't see a down side with either caliber- both are proven, I just love the 7mm bullet selection.
