260rem or 6.5 Creedmoor for PRS?

I`ve got an AR-10 with a 16" barrel in 308Win that I use for IPSC. And I`m thinking about getting another upper for some long range PRS-type shooting.
I`ve got it narrowed down to eather a 6.5 Creedmoor or a 260 rem. 24" barrel with a Sig 4-16x50 ffp Scope.
I reload ammo so price difference is not an issue.
What should I go for 6.5 or 260?

I’d say 6.5.

The benefit of a 260 is you can push it a little faster when reloading.

But if your running a gas gun their equal

The 6.5 Creedmoor gaining popularity here in Norway so I suspect brass is going to be more available and cheaper than .260rem. More factory loads in the shops allready.

I run a 260 REM in a JP LRP-07. I have feed issues......... It will run 50+ rounds from clean gun with no problems. After 50+ I get stove pipes and double feeds. Clean it and it works fine for another 50+. I the Gunsmiths say, "its the 260 case - switch to 6.5 CM" So after fighting it a PRS matches for years, it is now getting a 6mm Creedmoor barrel.

In a bolt gun? I can only assume you've got some kind of issue with magazine/bottom metal fitment with the action. The LA might be a contributing factor, but I'd bet mag/bottom metal is the real culprit.

As much as it pains me to say this in an AR with limitations because of magazine length 6.5 CM is the superior choice if you want to run 140 class bullets and probably still with many 130s.

Yes, the follower is a long action shaped for a 30-06. Again, due to the wider shoulder and shorter distance to get there in the 6.5 Creed, there is a huge angular difference in case taper between the 30-06 and the Creedmoor cases. The follower would definitely have to be narrower at the front to point the bullet to the chamber.

Even the .008" difference between a .308 based case and a Creedmoor case leaves wiggle room.

I run a 260 with 142smks in my compass lake rifle. Their reamer is the shit. They have the correct amount of freebore to run the 260 in a gas gun with no issues. I love out shooting the 6.5 creed guys..... but but Hornady told me it was the best haha
Hornady is pulling the same crap with the 6 arc now.

I run a 260. It is the master race bullet for sure. But the 6.5 is so much easier to get ammo for and brass. I love the 260 but Remington 6.5 has taken over shooting.

It doesn't get better velocities. It depends on how it's loaded. The SAME BC's as the .260. The cartridge was shortened so you could put longer, higher BC bullets in an AR-10. And for that matter, it applies to Rem short actions as well. Neither matters though if the throat isn't cut for those long bullets.

On that note though, I always have a problem going with Remington on a lot of things as what they screw up, they could give a crap to straighten out, or even support. More specifically, the .260.

Yep.
Tons of 243, 7mm08 and 308 brass available and if you run a 260 at 2700ish with a 140, it has mild recoil yet very effective with excellent barrel life considering the performance.

For years my 260 was my do it all rifle 100 to 1800+ yards and it served me well, now it’s my 100-1500 rifle and I’m running 130’s at 2970ish and really enjoining it in its new role.

I now run no binder mags and a chamber with extra freebore and that has been a great combination for me for the last two barrels.

6.5cm can be made out of 308 brass just like 260 can. Ive made 1000+ out of LC 308....Very very nice stuff but yes necks need to be turned. You can do it.

Im not sure about in your AO, but 6.5cm brass is EVERYWHERE around me in PA. Same with 6.5cm ammo.

The #1 reason 6.5cm is the clear winner for a large frame gasser is because you can run all the long 140gr bullets out of a mag with a 6.5cm SAMMI reamer and touch the lands and still have room in the mag. That IS NOT possible with 260rem.... You can run 260rem, but you need to push that 140gr bullet way down in the case to fit in a mag then you have a big jump to the lands when using a 260rem SAMMI reamer. Looking at my notes, a 140 your looking at 2.92" to the lands... So to fit in a mag at MAX coal its a .1 jump on a new barrel. Now, their are custom 260rem gasser reamers out there with a shorter freebore but you have to have a custom barrel spun up by a smith and request that reamer, if they have it... You arent finding off the shelf 260rem AR barrels like that.

So, no special reamer/throat to run the long 140gr 6.5cm rounds out of a mag... Need special reamer to do that with 260rem..

Now, those of us that built dozens of these, 260rem first, 6.5cm rifle gas, 6.5cm +2....We ARE NOT running Magpul mags. We are running KAC and Larue mags that allow you to run rounds with a COAL up to 2.871".... With 140 ELD's in my 6.5cm SAMMI chamber AR's, I hit the lands with that bullet @ 2.857..... Plenty of room to chase if I wanted to....I run .02 off lands...

I agree with a lot of what you are saying. It's a little more difficult to size down .308 to 6.5 CR, but it IS doable. Both the .260 and 6.5 will need necks turned.

Where I've been all over the West and Midwest, 6.5 CR cases aren't lying around. .308 is lying around, but not always super abundant. Not, at least, like .223 is. I chastize myself for falling for the cheap 'ol brass just laying there. You gotta punch/cut crimps, and not all the same. Okay for blasting, not so good for long range precision shooting. But, I digress, pick up brass anywhere isn't really all that good anyhow for precision.

Added: 6.5 Cr is getting more and more prevalent in stores. I guess what I'm thinking , since the point of the thread was what to use for PRS, I'd still say either. Somewhere I lost the point and went off on range brass tangent, which should not determine what cartridge you go with.
