Anyone out there reloading for .270 wsm? I'm using RL19 with standard large rifle primers. All my manuals say reg primers, but internet resources point to magnum primers. Any thoughts?

Re: .270 wsm primer question..

If you're not satisfied with the accuracy you're getting, try magnum primers. The primer that works best isn't necessarily determined by case size. For instance, in a 357 Herrett loaded with IMR 4227, I clearly get better accuracy with with CCI 250 large rifle magnum primers while I use regular Federal 210M primers with excellent results in a 7mm Remington Magnum.

Re: .270 wsm primer question..

The 270WSM is kinda borderline. It really depends on the powder you are using. I have a load using Magpro that I use WLRM primers otherwise I get hangfire when it's really cold. Load was fine during summer months, but in December when it was in the teens it caused problems. Found that out the hard way. With RL22 or IMR4831 I get better accuracy and reliable ignition using BR-2 primers.

Re: .270 wsm primer question..

Handloaded 400+ rounds of 270WSM (Norma Cases) for Sako 85 Grey Wolf using WLRM primers. All cases deprimer & neck sized (RCBS), primer pocket reamed (Wilson), flash hole deburred (Sinclair), UT cleaned (Hornady), trimmed (Wilson/Sinclair), and deburred/beveled (Wilson). H1000, RE-19, IMR4350 powder. On 5th use of cases. No issues.

Recommend you use magnum primers if handloading Norma brass.

Re: .270 wsm primer question..

If you are hunting with it, over 65 grains of powder and it could get cold, default to the magnum primers. I have loaded hundreds of .270WSM ammo.

My default load is very simple, 70 grains H1000, 140 Accubond, Winny Cases and Winny Magnum primer. I flatten about 20 deer and hogs using this load. Of course OAL is up to your rifle. My Winny M70 likes the Accubond right off the lands. I smoke a dummy load and back off a 1/4 turn of the seater die for my rifle. This makes for a LONG round, your magazine may not handle it. Browning guns won't take this load for sure. Though single loading from the bench this is not an issue.
