In the process of getting a 7mm Rock barrel that is currently a 7WSM, 1/8tw, 25" #7 contour. My Dad bought a rem 700 LA (270) and wants to do up a rifle for out to 800-850 yards. We're thinking of a 280rem. The barrel will most likely end up about 22" when finished. Is this enough barrel length to get him to where he wants to be? Do you have any other ideas for a non magnum 7mm that'll do the trick?
Any help is appreciated!

Re: 280 Rem?

7-08, 284, 280, 280ai all will get him to that range with the heavier bullets, 162 and up. The barrel length should not be a problem. Since he will be using a long action, if you go with the 7-08 or 284 specify a throat that would allow the bullets to be seated longer so they don’t take up powder space in the case like they usually do in a non custom short action.

On a side note Corbon is loading a berger VLD 168 grain showing a muzzle velocity of 2700 fps in the 7-08. A quick look at JBM puts that at 800 yards with 180 inches (21 moa) of drop and 1070lbs of energy. (under standard conditions)
