284 shehane reloading

I recently discovered fclass shooting. After being sick for awhile and being in a wheelchair kept me from shooting and now, I’m having someone build me a 284 shehane rifle.

The issue, there’s not much information out there.

1. Where can I get dies?
Whidden?

2. What brass do I need?

3. Steps to reload for this cartridge?

I keep reading neck turning but not sure what this is.

I apologize for my very simplistic questions.. I’m just tired of searching the internet.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

get straight 284 WIN.

I have been running .284 Shehane in my long action Tacticool rifle since barreling it from .284win

Since now Lapua makes .284 straight cases you don't need to expand the neck anymore, but i still have a bunch of sponsored 6.5-284 from Lapua so am using these as long as they last ( next 3 barrels or so)

I have .317 no turn-neck chamber so am not neck turning brass , loading everything up on Dillon 550 with the Whidden Fullsize neck bushing die , Leep powder charge die and Whidden bullet seater. Armanov Toolhead with frefloated dies , for powder charging a am using an Autotrickler V3 on a Sartorius scale.

Given its a tactical/practical rifle i run mostly Hornady 162 ELDM , and Reload Swiss60 Powder (RL17).

Honestly Shehane gain over straight .284 is very small , and fireforming is a bit of a hassle if you need a lot of brass. But fireforming loads tend to be accurate enough for competition use.

Fireforming for monied.


Us poors just fireform without wasting components.

They’re just trying to strike a balance of features. Speed, capacity, case life etc. the 284 will not leave you wanting for anything imo. Brass is in stock at Graf’s at the moment as well.

3.3 grains more powder space and a little more velocity. The advice to start with a regular .284 Win is wise.

Honestly without readily available Whidden dies .284 Shehane would have remained a rare bird ,these days you can even buy a factory rifles in .284 Shehane.(Sabatti)
284win is always just a bit low on speed so no wonder folks wanted to improve it . I have been 'redlining' loads in 284win much of the time chasing more FPS, even HBN coating bullets to be able to load up , in the end you find out you just added another variable that starts to show its fangs once barrel is nearing its end. So more boiler room was always on my mind.

My reasoning for Shehane was , i was going to get a new reamer for the next .284 barrel anyway, will use shorter barrel 25in vs 28in ,for use with suppresor so wouldn't like to lose too much speed and can use all the same components as i did for .284win.

Rifle was always meant to be able to play with big magnums on distances well past1000y for much less $ per shot. Like 284win , Shehane is easy to load , Accurate as they get and with superb ES/SD to boot.



Sabatti makes 2 or 3 rifle models in .248 Shehane.

I’m in talks with kelby about making me a rifle with their panda action. It’s not inexpensive for sure but in the long run, I think it will be a good investment.

There still ends up being a fair amount of wlocoty overlap between both. Certainly the shehane will be faster in apples to apples comparisons(barrel length, max pressure etc), but quibbling over 50-75 fps Is a huge waste imo. Not saying you shouldnt have done it, but a new f-class shooter has other things to worry about.

No!

Neck turning is purely down to the reloader's choice, folks that want to neck turn also use tighter neck in chamber . ( cca .312 vs .317)

.284win bras is used in both , there is no .284 Shehane brass that i know of.

Most improved cases just require fireforming. But is quite straight forward

Buy cases , develop a load for .284win , load them up and shoot (practice or competition) once cases have been fired, they are fireformed to 284Shehane chamber a new load needs to be developed for the larger case capacity , but as your barrel is changing rapidly first 200 rounds or so that is no big deal you will need to tweak your load anyway. One firing and load development is only extra step needed.

I agree, but like said built my rifle as a tactical/practical rifle that i use to shoot LR comps alongside folks with .338 LM sniper rifles so is always a bit of an underdog but not as much as folk might think inside 1800y and its doing it a fraction of the cost per round of an .338LM and can also run well against 6.5mm crowd in shorter range comps where the main handicap is the 5rd long action magazine

There may be variation of both cartridges that do require turning, just ensure Kelby’s knows you want no turn.

2020 southwest f-class nationals. Looks like straight 284 outnumbered all other cartridges combined including shehane.

If your shooting 600 yards mostly I’d go Dasher. If 1k mostly go straight .284. When you make HM at long range you’ll be ready for a Shehane if you want. Your first barrel or two your going to lose so many shots to wind it’s not even going to matter.
